Hi,

I'm thinking of upgrading from a compact to a DSLR.

My budget for the body is about £600-700. So I mainly focus on the Canon 550D, 50D and the Nikon D90.

So what's your suggestions?

Thanks!

What sort of photography are you looking to do. Would you like to do HD video?

Hiya,

being a Nikon guy I would say get the D90 :D , in all honesty I would suggest going to your local camera shop and trying different cameras to see which feels better in your hand / easier to use ect. :)

550D for canon and D90 for Nikon, it's your choice :D

I'm not interested in HD MOVIES.

The reason I put 550d here is some friends told me the IQ of 550d is even better than the 50D. The HD movie feature of 550D is not so important for me.

The D90 has a very good rep. I also find that not many people mention 50D but quite a lot recommend D90.

But the 50D seems to have a better built body than D90 and 550D.

Thanks.

I tried the D90 and 50D before. The 50D feels better in my hand. It's a little bit heavier and bigger and the metal body feels good.

What about their IQ? Which one is better in IQ?

Thanks!

Why not 50D?

Thanks my friend!
The 550D has new technology + video record that can be handy sometimes(now i see you don't want that).

Anyway, if the 50D feels better to you, take it. I just though you just moved from a compact camera so you don't want something too heavy :D.

Yes, the 50D really feels better than the 550D.
I don't know if the 550D is really better than the 50D in IQ...

Thanks!

do not concern too much about the IQ when you're talking about dSLR body. It's more about handling and features it supports. The lens decides the IQ.

The 50D handling is better than the 550D...So what about the features? 550D, 50D and D90? It seems you are using D90...and you may also have some experience on canon bodies...

Thanks.

I used the Nikon D200 before, and then change to D90. Personally I don't like the feeling of holding it at first, my hands are somehow too big for it. But then it become better, esp when you have to carry heavy lenses, flashes, tripod with you @.@.
Also, the D90 have great LCD, and uses SD card - that means I don't need to use a dedicated card reader for it other than the one in my lappy...

I personally don't like the canon bodies at all.
One example, in Aperture Priority mode, I can change the aperture & the iso with only one right hard with my D90 or D200, I also can change the focus point / auto focus area with one hand but I don't think the canon bodies can do that.. (can any canonian confirms me this?)

If D90, which lens do you recommend?

a mistake alot of us make is buying a brand new body with an ok'ish kit lens and then want to upgrade in 6 months time. i would say go for a canon 30D/40D second hand or nikon d80/D200 second hand and put the rest of the money into a couple of decent spec lenses.

Thanks for your reply!

I use the £600-700 for my body and then a 300-400 for my first lens. I don't know if this is a good way...

He speaks the sense. I've just downgraded from a newish camera body to a complete dinosaur; in spite of this it's nicer to hold, tougher and will do the lenses more justice. Newer isn't always better ;)

D90 + 18 105 first, then one or some prime lenses would be nice. Just play around with your kit and decide which prime you want, for £300-400, the 35f/2D or 1.8G , 50f/1.4D or 1.8D, 85f/1.8D would be nice. I never see any complain with those lenses :)
I've played around with quite a lot of lenses before made up my mind with the combo I'm having :D.

what about the metal body of the 50D compared with the D90? D90 seems to be more plastic but I don't know if this makes big difference.
Thanks.

the weather sealed bodies make quite big differences when you're shooting in the rain, sandstorm or sth like that.
I myself rather keep my beloved camera + lenses inside my weather proof bag + sleep at home than letting them shooting out there
So to me, it's nothing different other than size + weight.

The 50D is not weather sealed, it's just metal.

I looked at the 50d and the d90. The have similar functionality and IQ. In the end I went for the d90 as it is lighter and smaller and feels more comfortable for hand held shooting IMHO.

It's partial weather sealed i believe, is it the same as the 40D?

the battery door and memory card hatch are - hardly ground breaking though, it'd still be leakier than a swiss cheese in rain.

1. Go down to Jessops, LCE, Jacobs etc and have a play with a few.

2. Think about what sort of pictures you want to take. Then base your search with that in mind. For example I do mostly action photography, motorsport, air shows etc. The 50d is great for me as it has high fps of 6.3fps and quick Auto Focus giving me a good chance of getting the shot. The key word was for 'me', what is great for me maybe not needed, wanted by you.

3. Good quality lens will last you at longer then the camera. S/H body with a good lens is often a winning combo working to a budget.
