The film 52 challenge

Possibly.. if there's a way people shooting roll film can make it work without having to develop a roll of film every week. I can put P-back on, but not everyone can :D

I cant see why not, shoot the roll and then just update once its developed.

I would be up for this if the update when processed rule is in place - I think I'll have time for taking pics but random time for processing them over the next few months :-)

I suppose realistically we've got about 5 days to make our minds up :p

I could do with some encouragement to get out with the old cameras I have...I think this could possibly appeal more to me than the digital challenges...My main concern is that a lot of the cameras I want to shoot with have faults ...slow shutters, light leaks, lens fungus etc etc due to their age. Add to this the fact that I am fairly new to this area then my results will probably be very low standard compared to you guys.
What do you guys think....do I go for it or am I lining myself up to be laughed out of TP?

Go for it! I'm sure you won't regret it!

Film & conventional is the best part of TP :D

Get involved you'll have fun!!

How exactly do 52 things work? Do they have to be shot on themes? I was sort of thinking I'd shoot 52 portraits....

usually no theme I think.

I'll try and get used to dev and scanning a roll a week. It's about time I did ! so maybe this will give me the discipline I need :)

Otherwise, I'll shoot weekly and post as and when.

Rich

One a week, im not sticking to a theme per se, it can be what ever you want! Im just using the speed graphic, just got to wait for the new scanner to arrive this week so I can scan the first one!

Thanks for the encouragement...I'm definetly being persuaded.
For me personally I think if a theme was set then it may help me to "find" a suitable subject as against walking around searching for something suitable......I'll go along with whatever the majority wish to do....;If we do decide on themes, perhaps we could take it in turns to choose something??
I presume we need to get on with something this week ...as it is, i have some sheet film that is a little out of date and could do to be used up so maybe I'll get something developed and scanned by the end of this week.

If it's themed it's a little similar to the f&c challenge, and I'm not sure I can commit much every week, so shooting what I'm familiar with will help, and besides, I only shoot people, which really restricts my potential for covering themes without making a big effort styling wise.

Do we all have to have the same format, or shall we all just set up our own photo 52 threads?

Perhaps shoot whatever format and whatever theme suits the day assuming that works for everyone....as for setting up our own 52 photo thread, I don't wish to sound ignorant but how is it done?

Could we just have a thread per week with current week stickied (or the last 4)? Film 52 - week1, week 2, etc..

That way people could nip back and backdate entries as films are developed. If it's all one thread then weeks will get muddled. And if we all have our own individual threads it won't be as easy to track who's still in..

I'm lost lol
When it comes to stickies etc then I will just have to follow you guys as I have not a clue how to set it all up..;sorry!

With these 52 projects, do people really only take one photo? I presume you come up with one idea and take several frames to try to get the perfect shot, then you'd choose what you thought was the best one for that week. Does that sound right?

Or if we all start our own thread in the challenge section then link them in F&C and sticky that?

That probably makes most sense, as these projects often make fora untidy! General banter can be kept to the sticky and each user can put a link to their own challenge in their signature.

It'll allow, say, Danny to have a thread full of beautiful portraits and Scott to have a thread full of stunning Welsh scenary - if that's what they choose to shoot!

Yes, generally with the film challenges, the approach seems to be to set yourself a target of shooting at least one shot a week - if you shoot more, you choose your best.

It's also fairly common to have a theme, but the individual can set this for themselves. Choosing one subject (self portraits, a building, using only one camera/film type) and experimenting with that combination through the year also seems popular as a way to develop your "eye".

I think I'm "in" - if I can get my mojo working.

I'm in for sure, may need to buy another back purely for the "52" though, or I may shoot it in polaroids

Ok I'm up for it too ...I have a chance to get out tomorrow to try for my week 1 shot.
Will someone be kind enough to help/advise me with how to set up a thread in the way that has been suggested.
Thanks in advance.

I'd quite like to see a thread where once a week I get to see a beautiful portrait from Danny alongside one of Scott's Welsh landscapes.

We're film and unconventional.. we're allowed to be different :D

I'd best learn how to take beautiful portraits then hadn't I, lol. Pressures on!

I took my week 1 last night. Will dev along with week 2 to minimise devving.

Really need to buy another back I think...

My thread is in the challenges and projects section, it would e good to have each week in the photos from film section as well, but would this be allowed?

Can we ask people who are doing this to bump the thread when they do an update since it will necessarily be more sporadic in updates than the digital people?

OK I've just developed my film image for this week..drying at the mo.
Too late to get it scanned etc tonight so will post tomorow.
Anyone else managing to get started??

Kinda, I put a shot up in the film critique section, I'm debating whether to start with that

Quote "...had to be of the Mrs I'm afraid, she makes a reasonable test subject lol."

LMAO.......The shot I had planned taking today for the film52 simply didn't happen ...Instead I had to find a suitable object...oooops subject ....The Mrs!!!

All will be revealed tomorrow.

I would start with your portrait......Very pretty lady whom you've captured well.
Makes me feel like my efforts are going to be so inferior...

I'm in as long as I can vary the format as I've just bought a Mamiya C330f which is 6x6 the H1 is 6x4.5 and then I have the 16 or so 35mm cameras too.

All being well the Mamiya will be here by Friday so will stick a roll through that over the weekend, mind I still have to put a roll through the new LX so may use that, decisions, decisions!

Go for it.....I'll be using all manners of format from quarter plate through to 9x12, 120, 35mm and possibly even 127

Using some seriously old gear with all kinds of faults along with limited scanning facilities etc .......Hoping to have some fun and a bit of a laugh on here along with the serious side of learning from mistakes.

Welcome on board!

Lol she'll do

Thanks for the positive feedback :) I only shoot portraits, so glad I'm not appalling at it lol. Seriously get cracking on, your shots will be awesome, but more importantly you will grow as a photographer I'm sure

Still waiting for my new scanner so I can get my image up!

I'm definitely in.

I think I'll go with the "official" themes each week, but allow myself only 3 frames to try and capture the image (so I can bracket if necessary). Since I can't use a digital "spray and pray" style I may as well go the whole hog and restrict the number of possibles to really force me to think and be careful. I've sorted out a small notebook to make a note of what frames on what rolls and what settings were used for the challenge. No doubt it will mean that some weeks I'll be scanning a blank/overexposed/underexposed/badly developed neg! I'll do multi week batch uploads as and when I get rolls developed.

As an additional challenge, I'll try to have as many of the rolls developed myself as possible, though sometimes I'll cheat and use slide film ;)

Welcome onboard.....Don't worry yourself about poor results ...take a look at my first effort which I'm going to post in a few minutes!!!

I'm a shower man myself ;)

Groan :)

I might give this a go as well, not going to be doing the "official" themes though, it's going to be whatever I take a fancy to. Hopefully going out tonight to do some large format night shots if my portra has been delivered, I'm not sure the DR of velvia is really wide enough for night shots

Ok here goes with my first attempt:
This was not my original planned theme.
As it was I had to improvise and do an indoor long exposure so a subject was required.....Imagine the reaction that i got from the mrs when I asked her to get her kit off the moment she walked in from work!! lol

This was taken with an old mahogany and brass qurter plate field camera...exact age unknown but it's knocking on in years and poses quite a challenge at getting an image let alone a quality shot!
There are many faults with this pic I know but please feel free to make comment.

I'm just wondering how do we keep the thread together ..like I've just stuck this week pic on here but I don't understand how we group them all together...Stickys etc were mentioned earlier in the thread but to be honest that's all above my head .......Help!

Well I thought if we all start a thread in the proper section in projects and challenges, then have a thread in here linking to our 52 threads. That sound ok to everyone?
