The Fascist Olympics

...as i said...if you are happy and aren't worried that's fine.

Turn on telly and listen to the establishment tell you everything is all right. Everything is all right...there is nothing to worry about.

Thing is with posts like that you seem to be implying that you know differently - but you arent offering any credible evidence that everthing isnt allright, beyond saying that a towpath is going to be shut for a couple of months , which frankly I file under BFD.

seriously have a read of this http://www.mind.org.uk/help/diagnoses_and_conditions/paranoia then look back at your posts on this and other similar 'rights' issues

LOL...i know more about mental health issues that you can possibly imagine and don't need you to tell me about it.

File this advice under "mind your own business" and move on. You are not a HCP and should not diagnose. Again, if you are happy you are happy.

I do believe the OP threat title is over the top, but I also think that in Britain the excuse of preventing terrorism is vastly over used and the whole terrorist threat over-blown.

If you look at the Tour De France, there is zero security along the route, anyone can just stand at the side of the road within touching distance of the riders.
If some terror group wanted a spectacular the tour would be an ideal target, easy to get to, a few hundred top athletes very closely bunched together and watched on TV in large numbers (one single stage in 2009 had a global total audience of 44 million)

In fact when was the last know attempt at a spectacular  Oh hang on somebody will say there have been none because security and intelligence is so good at preventing one :nono:

As for the measure being temporary , just have a look at how long some of the temporary restriction in airports have been in place, and lets not forget the motorway 70 MPH speed limit was only going to be temporary (that lasted for 13 years before coming full into force in 1978)

I didn't make the thread - I stand by my original comments. FYI the word you were looking for is twaddle.

I always say twoddle, twaddle must be Scottish.

What would you object to then? Maybe if the banned anyone brown and with a beard from anywhere in London for 2 months?

Thats one of the most ridiculous statement ever - everyone knows that suicide bombers always shave before blowing themselves up :lol:

hang on while i get my tinfoil hat.

He does have a point Neil, and I am surprised you've not recognised that...

the government (in particular THE government currently in power) are _very_ good at function creep. I don't trust them - or any authority figure - as far as I can throw them, I wouldn't say I am paranoid, just cautious.

Both spellings are correct. :p;)

....and on that note after providing evidence to the contrary :exit:.

Good night all and may your own personal imaginary friend in the sky with a big white beard look after you.

Ah yes...Urban Dictionary..the home of the "Cleveland Steamer" et al....always a good place to base your research on.

It shows that the word exists, albeit in slang form. It's usually a lot more up-to-date in that respect than the OED.

The fact that people pronounce and spell it with an O is good enough for me.

Anyhows, I apologise for taking the thread off track, was just meant as an obesrvation and a bit light heartedness...

I'm surprised twaddlegate has overtaken the initial discussion.

On second thoughts...

Ermm...Maybe the twaddle/twoddle saga should continue.

No! No! No!...Only joking, apologies to all. :)

More news......The Kent County Show starts today, and for reasons of access to the showground on Detling Hill, they've coned off one lane of the southbound carriageway of the A249. I mean, I ask you...CONES?!?!?! Damn journey to work took an extra 10 minutes this morning, and if that's not an erosion of my civil liberties, I don't know what is.

:bonk: :bat:

Yeah they ran the inaugral colyford 'rebel run' last wednesday and acess to my road for motor vehicles was suspened for 90 minuites - this was clearly an abuse of my human rights on a scale of tianmen square , as I had to wait until 20.30 before i could go to tescos to buy my tea

(or it could have just been a minor inconvenience I had to work round  )

The Provisional Wing of the Colyford Residents Association can get quite nasty. You should have seen the reaction a few years ago when the Midweek Herald billed Colyford Goose Fair as ColyTON Goose Fair. We had to sacrifice a sub-editor to appease them and it was only because the UN were able to rush in some extra barrels of Branoc that Colyton was not razed to the ground.

Worst riots I've had to cover since Sidmouth Waitrose ran out of sun dried tomatoes and copies of the Daily Telegraph on the same day.

During the summer riots last year we thought the disaffected youth in colyford was going to kick off too - however we just gave him a slap and told him to wind his neck in

:lol: I just spat Pepsi over my computer.....you owe me a new keyboard.

You know something?

Earlier this week a security guard standing on Park Lane in central London thrust his hand into a photographer's lens and told him that the wasn't allowed to take photographs there.

The bloke was a press snapper?

The venue was the pavement outside The Hilton.

The reason given was Olympic Security.

The security guard was from G4S.

If that story had been posted on here instead of a towpath closure, then people would have been bating for blood.

Not all of the LOG restrictions are driven by sound security reasoning. Several are driven by either commercialism, poor forethought or just bad training.

I wonder if photography has been covered during training for these guards? If not, I'd expect there to be a fair amount of that sort of thing. Or have they changed/ brought in any byelaws for public spaces, say to prevent shots of tower blocks that have suddenly grown a crop of missiles?

Where did you see / hear this?
IF it's true then the "guard" in question was a d*ck...pure and simple. Plenty of them around befor the games, and there's be plenty left after.

Tell that to Pastor Niemoller Linky

Irrelevant. As long as the path reopens after the Olympics and or paralympics. then there is no problem.

Perhaps I should quote the good pastor to the workmen that have closed one of the roads near where I live, no I think I will treat it as a short term inconvenience.

It's true. There's no need to post IF quite like that.

The relevant point that you seem to have missed is that the Hilton is part of the Olympic security ring.

Sheesh...well forgive me for a typo why don't ya, and get back in the pram. :baby:

so you disagree with someone, then when they put you straight they're the ones spitting the dummy

FWIW Mark's spot on, many of the Olympic security decisions seem to have been taken to protect commercial interests, rather then to prevent any real problems.

Actually Hugh, no. Please show me in my post where I disagreed with Mark?
But because I commit the ultimate sin of a typo, he get's all snotty in his reply....and you too for that matter.

To explain myself better, I was stopped several years ago by some jumped up private uniform outside the National Gallery, who made a grab for my camera and told me I couldn't take pictures of the gallery frontage. They love to think they have powers that they don't actually have, and although the Olympics is giving them carte-blanche for a few weeks, there will still be private sector uniformed morons on the streets of London long after the circus has left town.

where have I been snotty?. You're reply did read as spitting the dummy (regardless of if the typo contributed). Anyway doesn't really matter does it?

I'm not going to disagree there. But this thread is about the Olympics

.............But this thread is about the Olympics

It might have been, briefly. Seems to have descended into complete paranoia since then. I think I'll don my foil cap and sit in a corner until it all blows over.
