The Fabulous Fuji X owners thread

Watched the Petapixel pre-release video of the X100VI and I can see straight away that they will have the same problems with the sticky EVF/OVF pop-up screen. It's also still got that [for me] useless focal length of 35mm (equivalent). Having had nothing but trouble with my [new, then replaced then replaced again] X100Vs, I shan't be even looking at this one as it looks and behaves almost identically to the V but with a super-inflated price. It is also made in China, not Japan, which for me is deal-breaker.

What do you mean super inflated price ? An extra £250 for an upgrade to 40MP, improved AF and IBIS added is good value.

Also if you knew that 35mm was useless for you why did you buy one ?

It's an inflated price but that isn't new. It's a trend, Back when Sony were in their Nex phase you could get APS-C ILC cameras for around £250 and up.

I kind of wondered that too. But I suspect the issue here is compromise. What choices do you have in the market for this type of compact - Ricoh GRiii/iiix, X100V/VI, and Leica Q2/Q3. Fuji also very kindly provide the add on accessory lenses.

I don't have any of these APS-C/FF compacts - but I have been sorely sorely tempted at times (thought about the Sony RX-1 a long time ago, and regret not grabbing one of the last available X70s some years back - or eve a run-out XF10 a while back). 35mm equivalent is really my thing either - but I'd probably choose the X100V or X100VI over the Ricoh GRiii to get the tactile Fuji control setup and the viewfinder.
 
Disappointed in myself.

I have absolutely less than zero desire to purchase the new X100 :(

I love the form factor, LOVE the OVF and exclusively used it on all my previous X100s over the years, love the thought of IBIS and 40MP. Even though I still have £1225 sitting here from the V I recently sold to MBP so the new one would ‘only‘ cost me £374…..

I just can’t do it.

The original X100 was £999 at launch (2011) so in 12 years its increased £600, thats £50 per year, which is slightly above the cost of inflation (UK), given the increase in specification, it actually hasn't been 'inflated' very much. The X100 series also doesn't depreciate very much, so in real terms they are one of the cheapest cameras to own.

My X100F cost me about £75 per year in depreciation, and my X100 so far stands me at about £30 a year (I was lucky enough to buy one in £2012 for £649 (new)), in recent years the desire for X100Vs as pulled all the model values up, and given demand for the new model, this isn't changing anytime soon.

Given your want to get out there and take images against actually getting out there and doing it, I think not buying one is a good idea. Having a £1599 paperweight will just wind you up!!

Its a shame as I enjoyed your images.

Appreciate the comments - thanks.

I like the thought of taking images, actually enjoy taking them and enjoy processing them and sharing - I’ve got other ‘issues’ I don’t seem to be able to deal with - along the lines of being a recluse and not going anywhere other than work when I have to and Tesco once a week.

This means I never have anything different, new or interesting to snap which ultimately leads to zero motivation to pick up a camera and frustration with said camera sitting unused in the cupboard.

I do still enjoy looking at other peoples images though (y)

What Dryce says, no real decent alternative in a small, easy-to-carry package; however I found what I wanted in an Olymous OM-D E10 with 12mm lens - same size, so much more useful and half the price.

Have you considered joining the National Trust? Getting out to any of their many sites usually ends up with a walk around gardens, and of course, the obligatory coffee & cake in the tea room..... My wife and I rejoined this year as we missed not being members since covid, and we have Stourhead on our doorstep (good bit of exercise walking around there). We visited Kingston Lacey yesterday, a bit early for all the flowers but the walk with the T5 did me good. Not so sure about the Flat White & Victoria Sponge though :ROFLMAO:
 
For those of you with the 150-600, are you convinced it's a better option than the 100-400 + 1.4TC?

Do you notice the additional weight? Is it much longer ? (the 100-400 with TC is a tight fit in one of my rucksacks).
 
I am now looking at accessories lol

Edit - decided on lens hood! (YC Onion, £44 on Aliexpress)

Not sure on Thumbgrip or bottom plate/grip yet, not sure if X100v accessories will fit.

I used to feel a bit like that and I don’t even need to go out for work as I work from home for myself.

I started wandering the local woodland just as Covid struck and have since developed a real interest in woodland photography. I previously had no interest in that kind of photography but now I’m almost obsessed by it.

Perfect for me, I’m out at any time of the day, I don’t see many, if any other people and I love the solitude.

If you have woodland you can get to easily could be worth a try. :)
 
I placed the order on black but why am I keep thinking a Silver one? I want it to be discrete when I am out! (silly mind wanting something "prettier") o_O:banana:

I also ordered the black i do prefer the look of the silver yet i find my other Fuji cameras such as my X-T20 which is silver it has bits of wear on its paintwork even though its low usage and looked after…
So i tend to go with black Fujifilm cameras now to keep them looking tidy.

My other reasoning is that all my cameras are black, the only time I bought a silver one (Olympus OM2), I ended up dropping it and destroying it lol

The universe is telling me to stick with black :)

Smallrig are marketing their stuff as X100V / X100VI compatible

I tend to think that when I pick up an X-T30 as well. The size and feel with a small metal barrelled lens - with an aperture ring - feels like an early late 70s/ early 80s small SLR like a Pentax ME or MX, or an Olympus OM.

In some ways I find it ridiculous that the aperture ring should be important (to me). They had started to fade away in the late 80s and 90s as SLRs became more electronic and had control dials. I think I only bought one DSLR lens since the early 90s that had an aperture ring - and that was a Sony 135mm STF around 2010 or 2011. Then Fuji messed with my head since 2019 and I won't buy lenses without.

All my Sony GM lenses have them so I’m used to it now, it kind of have a love hate relationship with it since whilst it’s cool, I used to keep knock the setting off and once time I shot a minute in F/16 because I put it in A for auto and it got knocked to the nearest F-Stop (with silly ISO as a result). So now I leave it in F/1.4 all the time.

To me, it's part of shooting Fuji. The X-T series has always seemed to be like an old digital film camera, and I like having the aperture on the lens, it just seems natural.

My X-T20 is my first proper DSLR since an old Canon.

So you're telling me other brands *don't* have aperture rings on the lenses? Its so intuitive; I can't imagine not having it

Aperture rings started to disappear lenses from the late eighties as electronics and P mode became common. SLR cameras started getting control wheels in the grip. With autofocus bodies being developed manufacturers redesigned their systems and introduced new ranges of lenses.

Fuji have left them off some lenses as well - such as the XC15-45, the XC35, and the original XF27.
 
Can someone with a X100v tell me what the back wheel does?

I’m looking at thumb rest some of them obstructs it.

I am wondering if it is a setting that I use often. Basically it is between the Smallrig or Lensmate.

Smallrig is so much cheaper, $14.99 with the shutter button too.

Lensmate is like $80 !

What is more critical is that the obstruction of the compensation dial, the Smallrig really blocks it, and that is a dial I use a lot.

Ignoring the fact that the Lensmate can flip forward, as that is more to use the ISO dial (which I seldom change, it will stay in Auto), I am more concern with access to the wheel and compensation dial. The lens mate also looks like blocking the AEL button a lot which is just as important for back button focusing.

Without flipping it out.

I used to use front wheel for exp comp as it gives up to 5 stops each way, clicking it allowed ISO setting changes

I always felt thumbrests obscured my use of the camera, so never used them - only used a grip when I wanted Arca tripod plate

I actually have the ex comp set to C with it on the front dial. I just found it quicker & easier to adjust than using the dedicated thumb wheel.
