The Fabulous Fuji X owners thread

Just a heads up in case anybody is interested, the usual free 48 Hour Fujifilm loan has been extended over the Christmas period. If you loan a lens starting from the 22nd of December (so delivered on the 21st), you get to keep it until the 3rd January 2023.

I've just ordered the 33mm f/1,4 for the whole Christmas and New Year period for free.

I've managed to do the camera firmware by this method. Do you know if I can update a sigma lens too via the app?

I dont know but I would not expect it to work.

No you can't do a Sigma lens via the Fujifilm app. I don't think there is a way of updating the firmware on Fuji mount Sigma lenses, as far as I know Sigma don't make their dock in Fuji X mount
 
The only way to update a Sigma lens is through their USB dock, or send it to them.

You can't even update a Sigma lens on Canon mount through a Canon camera.

I think you can do it by sd card but I haven't got a reader currently.

From some of my posts on here it's obvious I am a fan of the X-H1 as it has all the features and does all I need/want a camera to do. Although I never bought a X-T2, as I was satisfied with my X-T1, I really liked
the SOOC output. What I got with the X-H1 was the sensor of the X-T2 mated with a shutter release as smooth as baby's b*m, the best viewfinder I have ever used, all in a body built like a tank, which perfectly fits my hands and way of working.

I don't know if you have handled a X-H1, if you haven't, then my advice is to try handling one as I think you will find it to be an enjoyable experience.

I like the X-H1, held it for about 30seconds last weekend. What is stopping me partly is that I get this sinking feeling that it's just an A73 in APSC format (with not as good AF).

As opposed to getting something different like the X-Pro 2 or X100.

I don't know why i am being so indecisive over this lol. It's not like i am dropping £2k on it like when new.

p.s. I am partly dismissing the X-T2 and X-T3 because I don't think it's IQ is that much different to the X-H1 and X-H1 has the IBIS, especially the X-T2, they are both pretty much the same money.

Although I eventually settled on Fuji's flavour of APS-C, that was why I opted for a Sony A7ii and then A7Rii when I first picked up a decent MILC. They are almost the same size, both had IBIS so the theoretical benefits of the FF sensor of the Sony won me over. In reality, the benefits of FF only came with handheld low-light and night-time shooting. Which I didn't do often enough.

Can you stretch to the X-T4? That has IBIS and is why I'm upgrading from the otherwise perfect X-T2. MPB has them for under £900 now.

Just get a X100 of some description.

They're different enough to the A7 series to justify buying one, you don't have to run two (Sony and Fuji) changeable lens systems and you don't have the additional bulk that comes with a changeable lens system. No offence to Fuji users meant but Fuji APS-C changeable lens system + Sony FF doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I do have Sony and MFT but in my defence MFT does offer quite a reduction in bulk and weight over both Sony FF and arguably over Fuji APS-C interchangeable lens too.

The point you're missing is that Fuji is the most enjoyable system to use for many people, personally i'd only entertain the X100V and when i've had them in the past i'm instantly drawn to considering the WCL & TCL which defeats the object somewhat.

Sony is clinically efficient and boring.

MFT is frustrating, poor AF, noisy images and not much lighter than Fuji.

X-H1 and a zoom or a couple of primes is probably the most satisfying camera i've ever used.
 
The camera system that I can say it was like the extension of my body was the Canon EOS 5D series. The layout of that never really changed over there years and because it doesn’t have physical dials, it’s all behind buttons. I could change settings with my right hand, all without looking at the camera. Everything from focus points location on the screen, exposure compensation etc. Although I feel like whilst mirrorless has better AF, I was quicker off the mark with the Canon. I could literally change the settings with my right hand in the half second of seeing something, moving the camera from waist height to my eye.

With modern cameras and their dials I don’t get this same smoothness in operation.

In my opinion, that’s the best shooting experience.

Apart from the big one on the back and the other behing the shutter trigger, you mean?

But the changes shows up digitally, compared to physical markings on the body. Because it’s digital, I know how to reset it to Center by feel, once it’s reset, I can feel by clicks left or right to move the focus points or exposure comp.

There is also no dials on the other side of the camera, I can operate everything one handed.

That doesn’t work with both the Fuji. Even with my A7 I find it difficult to move the exposure comp without looking all by feel.

I am the opposite, I shot with a Canon 5D for 10 years, and a 20D before that, which had the same layout, but after 6 months of using Fuji, I picked up a 5D and it felt totally alien. I seem to get on with the Fuji X-Tx layout.

How do you operate the ISO knob without using your left hand?

Imagine you don’t have a left hand, without putting down the camera, you have no strap, you are just holding it with your right hand. Don’t use your mouth or chin…

With my 5D I can change the ISO as well without my left hand.

p.s. I am not saying which is better, as it’s all subjective. But when people say X camera system has a better user experience, to me, the best experience is when a camera that doesn’t get in the way when i want to take a photo. I personally find both the Fuji and Sony system gets in the way a bit in its operation. I’ve not tried the new Canon so i don’t know and i have always found Nikon stuff (before the Z line, to be backwards, backwards in the way the lens mount on the body, backwards in the way exposure comp sets…i know you can reverse this later models).

I'm not missing the point at all.

With this hobby there are many ways to go and gear fondling is definitely a part of it but faced with the choice of FF and APS-C systems of similar sizes and wight and assuming reasonable handling from both I'd rather have the FF system especially if I already had that FF system and more kit to go with it.

Your emotional comments about Fuji are understandable but I think your comments about Sony are mostly nonsense not because I'm defending Sony as despite owning Sony kit I have no brand loyalty, I just think your comments would be mostly nonsense if directed against any marque. This is an example of the fanboy talk that does put me off and despite your comments about boring efficiency you'll probably be one of the ones enthusing about some new Fuji camera with better focusing and tracking or a lens with better faster focus and better across the frame sharpness unless you remain true to your principles and reject these boring things.

MFT may be frustrating and/or poor in some situations but the same could be said of APS-C Fuji but both are good enough for many people especially when people take a more realistic view about their needs and there's no denying that some get excellent results from MFT. The bulk and weight argument has to be based on specific body and lens combinations, for example there doesn't appear to be anything in Fuji land to match the bulk and weight savings offered by the smaller MFT body and lens combinations and any performance advantage the Fuji APS-C system may have might be mitigated at least to a degree by the smaller MFT having smaller faster lenses.

I'm glad you're happy with your kit but other options and opinions are available, for other people, obviously.
