That the xh1

Been out today as it's sunny...

Went to WWT Barnes to see if I could get the Bittern, but they were all hiding behind the reeds.. :(

Had to make do with one of my favourites...

I've just had a play with the new X-H1. It's certainly heavier and bigger in every respect than the T2. But it isn't as much of an increase as I'd expected. Doesn't appear to be anywhere near as big as the usual DSLR models. Main increase in size is in the hand grip area which is now quite substantial. Plus this is now further away from the lens; all this to accomodate the wizardry for IBIS.
Not sure I like the display on top of the body. Either dark grey on darkish silver or darkish silver on near black. Hard to read if, like me, you need reading glasses. Even in bright light it wasn't ideal, but then I never used those displays on the 5D models I had.
IBIS. Hmmm. In theory it works with every lens going. The system works out what IS the lens has, utilises that and then adds the extra up to the maximum. There are new lenses in the pipeline (don't ask where) that are supposed to be tailored just for this body. I did ask about legacy lenses and the guy went all cagey - as you'd expect. The camera needs communication with the lens to work out what IS is present. Legacy lenses don't talk to the camera. No hard information is available but it would appear that IBIS won't work. No tests appear to have been carried out - not surpising really as Fuji want to sell new stuff. No wonder he was being cagey!
The strong feeling is that this still remains a tool aimed at videographers. The X-T3 is rumored to be announced at Photokina with delivery approx 12 months from now. No other info as yet.
Fuji guy gave the impression that this was really aimed at a different market than the existing ranges and was possibly the start of a complete new range.
The X-H1 will cost £1700 without grip or lens with delivery in late March.
Will I be buying one? Highly unlikely.
Surely for legacy glass you would just enter the focal length like any other IBIS equipped body?

In terms of IQ, it takes it very well and IMO cropped 1.4x images are nicer than straight 2x converted ones (as long as you don't need all the pixels.) Hard to compare the AF speed between the 2 options - pretty sure Sigma don't make the 150-600 in Fuji X mount and different bodies AF at different speeds with the same lens. IMO it's plenty fast enough - but I don't do BiF.
.

Thanks nod, good to know, now if sigma made x mount... although there is the fringer ef to x mount af adapter..

On another note as I was browsing for fuji gear camera world have the xt20 and 18-55 for £869 and free card and battery.

This X-H1 release has taken me by surprise, I've been agonising about selling my X-T2 for months now as I never use it. Now I fear it's not going to get a realistic price. as I've left it too long :(

Don't think so Jim. They appear to be aimed at different markets although there seems to be a Fuji offer with certain dealers who are giving £840 trade in plus £100 bonus to upgrade. That almost shouts out that Fuji feel they might have trouble shifting units in volume.

But you should certainly think of selling before the T3 is announced at the end of the year.

After 3 days of owning a new x-T2 I’ve just found out what that little black disk thingy is. Should have read the manual but was too eager to play, plus it’s more a book than a manual.

Yeah I agree, I think, I really like the X-T2 , but when I'm going out for a walk I always go for my X-Pro 2, it's my favourite camera of all time, I've recently bought an X-E3 which is a fantastic camera. The EVF on the X-T2 is so good, it's all very confusing. Why do Fuji make such good cameras

OK. No problems.
Billy no mates rides again!!!

Enjoy York. But beware - it's pricey with a woman in tow:eek:

Which black disc do you mean?

It’s about the size of a ten pence piece. Turns out it’s for fitting the strap to the body, I used my nails, but it came in handy as I put the strap on the wrong way round twice.

I know what you mean, but hidden in there amongst the nonsense is usually some good info.
Annoyingly very true.

He shows nothing, goes nowhere (or at least it seems), loves his own voice, repeats himself, suffers from opinions, but does know some useful things...

I think it should be law that whenever linking to one of his vids use the time linker to take the viewer to exactly the right stop to reduce rage :D

I think I read somewhere that he'd been caught passing off someone elses pictures as his own and that people couldn't find any evidence to support some of his claims about what he'd done (photography wise) in the past.

I've not seen any of his vids and have hardly heard about him... but from what I've read on other bloggers sites he seems a bit... dubious?

Obviously apologies if I've got all this wrong...

Difficult to do on larger sensors, does not mean that it can not be done, or that it is not worthwhile.
A rig that can stabalise an entire camera is not an option or needed for most stills photography.

In cine they are mostly concerned about the visible and eratic motion at the frame edges, that emphasises camera motion.
Stills photographers are mostly concerned by loss of sharpness whithin the frame.

First night test of my new-to-me X-T2 with a Canon FD 35mm tilt-shift lens. Three shot vertical pano. A little tight for space on the top but I was at maximum shift

Hi... did you only use shift between shots for the pan? I am not sure why you used a shift lens?

Not sure I quite follow but this is three horizontal shots stitched into a pano (vertorama??). The first was at the standard setting for the hospital, the second shifted up to catch the middle of the shard and the third at full upwards shift to get the top of the building.

Tried this shot a couple weeks ago from that very spot. Failed miserably due to lens not wide enough/distortion in pano. I forgot tilt shifts even existed, but this seems like a good use of one...

Most important question though - what was your time on the sprint track thingy there? ;)

I've been there a few times and only last night did I notice the sprint track. I thought they were just artfully placed lights to help a photographer's composition. They way I felt last night the 30m would have taken me about five minutes. Do people ever use the gym equipment there? All the office workers must get very distracted by sweaty people in lycra doing sit-ups three metres outside their windows

I was surprised that the image circle could be shifted so much, with out any tilt.
