The Fabulous Fuji X owners thread

The 35 1.4 is my go-to also. Wonderful lens, ignore the reports of it being 'sluggish' or noisy, because it's plenty fast enough in my experience, and the noise, well, what are you going to be shooting? funerals? :D It never bothered me in the slightest. I've had way noisier lenses. I think photo enthusiasts are just too spoiled these days with silent motors. Enjoy :)

I'm no spring chicken either at 41, and I can't sleep the nights before any new gear is due to arrive :D
It's crazy but I've been getting up at 5.30am for the past 3 days as all I can think about is getting out with my new gear. That coming from someone who had lost a huge amount of interest in photography due to being frustrated by carrying so much heavy kit.
I feel totally rejuvenated now and raring to go again.
Great endorsement of the 35mm as well, it was your macro shots that got me thinking of getting it.

I purchased an X-T2 yesterday and love it after only using it for one night (it's replaced my X100T as my travel camera).

I'm struggling to find a nice wrist strap for it though.. I picked up a peak design as a temporary measure but looking for something a little nice such as a leather or rope type.

Can anyone recommend one?

Grab a set of the cheap macro rings too, with the 16mm ring attached to the 35mm I think you're getting 0.7x or so, not 1:1 but good enough. Add the 10mm ring on top and I think it's a tad over 1:1, but the lens is almost touching the subject.

The 35/1.4 really is quite magical :) Easily my go-to lens, with 18-55mm as the second in command!
This is my dilemma now - do I go for a wide prime or the 18-55mm. I think I'm steering towards the zoom but I've been leaning towards a 18mm f2. Price is similar so it's not a budget issue, I'm just not sure which way to jump.

Yes I'll definitely do that, I did have a sneaky look yesterday after securing the 35mm. I'm off to Amazon for a grip so maybe these will leap into my basket as well whilst I'm not looking :naughty:

Whilst I like the 18mm - if I had to choose between that and the 18-55 zoom, I'd definitely go for the zoom as it is so versatile. The 18 is good for a compact setup though

Hoping to post a really rough AF test with the 50-230 a bit later, just a few shots with my lad on his bike but should be a decent test, I've not seen them yet...

18-55 is multi purpose lens and it goes well with the 55-200. When I bought my kit 35mm f2, 56 f1.2 and 55-200 lens, I could buy the 18-55 but I decided not to. Not because the lens is not good, is because I want compact setup and enjoy shooting with prime. If I have mid range zoom, I will be end up using that lens and nothing else. Also I bought my 18mm f2 in here for £120 (no box tho). I think is a bargain consider what the price is like now.

I wish I could find an 18 f2 for close to that now, well done!
I've just read a review on the new 'nifty fifty' as they're calling it and it looks a really good buy.
Oh the decisions...fun though even if it does mean more sleepless nights pondering choices.

That will be interesting, look forward to seeing the results.

Look forward to seeing them, as hopefully the weather might be nice for Gay Pride here in Brighton.

As I have a love of wildlife photography, I think I'll bite the bullet and get the 55-200

IMO you'd be better off saving for a while and getting a 100-400 instead. Not a cheap lens but way more reach for wildlife (and it'll take the telecons if you want/need more!) Again IMO, if you try the 55-200 before the 50-230, you may well find that the cheaper lens feels ... cheaper! I have both after buying a 2nd hand 50-230 for the extra reach and lightness but after a week of using the 50-230, it went into a cupboard and has sat there ever since (with the 100-400 taking its place in the bag). To be fair, the 55-200 has also stayed largely unused since the 100-400 appeared but does come out to play if I'm out for a wander and don't want the weight of the longer lens around my neck.

Again, I have both (and the 18-135) and would recommend either of the zooms over the prime unless you really need the extra stop the f/2 gives compared to the 18-55. For ME, the WR that the 18-135 offers along with the extra flexibility of double the FL range makes it the walk around lens of choice.

I really must get all my languishing kit boxed up and see what I can get with it at the LCE!

I agree the 100-400 is the obvious solution which I am planning to add in time but for now and the foreseeable future, my budget won't stretch that far so I've purchased the 55-200 now and know I'll be restricted but at least have a chance at getting some decent shots when I get close enough to the action.
It may come over as snobbery but I've never been a lover of plastic mount lenses, I tried a couple of Canon ones and they just felt wrong somehow, one of the reasons for ignoring the 50-230 but I also listened and read a lot about the 55-200 and I'm happy with that decision.

I appreciate all the excellent information that you and all the other guys here have given, I am listening to it all and enjoying participating in this thread, a lot more than I ever have on others I've been involved with.

Okay, here goes :)

I took a burst of 28 shots.

Short version...
Three out of focus
Three close, some sites would call these in focus, but I'm picky!
22 in focus

I used the X-T20, on general AF mode with a large AF zone, it picked up the face a few times when he got closer.

So I guess that would be a hit rate of 83.9% (if I weigh it as 1 point for sharp, .5 for partial and 0 as a miss... 100/28 * # * x, ie 3.57 * 22 * 1 = 78.57), lol, I know maths!!

Here is the overview, the key is:
No colour : In Focus
Yellow : Close but no cigar
Red: Nope, thats a binner!

All shots below were at 100% zoom, but pretty much all would pass if left at the original size, well except 28.

full

I'll throw out a few examples to show what I consider in focus, close and totally out of focus.

Number 6 - In focus (but pretty far away so gave it some scope)

Number 7 - Out of focus

Number 13 - Partial

Thank you kindly Sir, I much appreciate you taking the time to reply.(y)

"I've visited that place several times as I used to live for a short while in "Sausalito" just the other side of the "Golden Gate Bridge. I assume from your comments that you've also visited those parts"

George.

Indeed. I stayed in San Francisco for 5 nights back in 2012 or so and also visited Sausalito. My now wife wasn't so keen on San Francisco, but adored Sausalito.

I must admit, the they're both amazing places but to live in, I'd pick Sausalito hands down. Excellent taffy also [emoji1]

I lived the other side of the bay for a while, in 1982 for 4 months, at Tiburon. I liked Redwood City and I did venture across the Bay Bridge once, amazing engineering. I did bit of the usual tourist trail - up to Marin County for the winerys. The redwoods for the Monarchs - and I remember a traditional English pub somewhere out in the wilds up that way, near the road with all the twisties and hairpins on it.

27 is a cracker :)

27 is a cracker :)
Cheers :)

I actually liked a few others I took, but that part was the AF test, I will say though that this is the first time I've opened it up for a full burst and while it wasn't bad it fell far short of the X-T2, but given that this is the first time I'd noticed I think I'll let it off!

I was a bit shocked at the price of the 18 and 60 when I returned to Fuji this year. Who would have thought buying a crate of each a few years back would've been such a wise investment!

I bought the 18mm for £200ish brand new and the 60mm for around £300 (new) from UK retailers.

Mad isn't it, you'd struggle to get the 18 for that secondhand now from what I've seen looking around. Around the £250 mark at Camera Jungle and similar on the bay.

Yeah the 18mm still fetches €300 on local sites here, well, it being Ireland buyers usually manage to haggle them down a bit from that :D

Yeah the price is putting me off a bit to be honest as I'm not even sure it's my best option.

I'm totally having a GAS attack and need a 60/2.4 (as I haven't tried it before and the rendering looks nice).

Anyone looking to shift theirs on?

I thought this would all end once I got the 90/2 LOL!

I fancied that lens for a bit, I see one advertised on a local site for €450 [£400 or so] and can't help thinking they were a lot cheaper under year ago on the used market.

Keep taking the pills Sir, you'll eventually get better. If you don't then Hey !!! What the heck.:D

Ouch! eBay prices seem to be in the range of £210-300.

Fuji refurb shop have it in stock at £399 at the moment if your gas is about to explode!

Thanks :) Fortunately I don't have £400 worth of GAS this time :D The problem with the Fuji system is that all the lenses have appeal... dangerous stuff.

I have the same problem, no money but a very explosive mind!
Having only just moved to Fuji, the desire for some of the lenses is starting a bubbling in my stomach now. I've just been looking at the 10-24 f4 ...I want one!

You guys [emoji1]

Take it slow. Learn and enjoy what you have and when you can afford to, buy your next acquisition. That said, I snapped up the 10-24 when double cash back and 0% finance were on offer so I can't really talk (have traded my 18-55 for a 35 recently though).

It's ok Ian, I'm just playing mind games with myself....for now anyway;)

 :D, The 10-24mm is right up there with the very best from any manufacturer.(y)

George.

GAS got the better of me and I just bought the 10-24 - I have good excuse though as I sold a Canon L lens for more than I'd hoped for which was an unexpected bonus.
I've now got 10-24, 35 f1.4 & 55-200 to go with my X-T10 so I'm happy with that.
I spent a bit more than I intended to but it's all covered by sales of dslr equipment...well almost:exit:

Mind games didn't last long then? Enjoy the lens mate, it's truly a brilliant piece of glass. Same setup as I've ended up with....except I don't have the 55-200mm (yet)

Haha no they did'nt, but I've never been a fan of endurance games as which is why I prefer Draughts to Chess!!.
To be honest, I wasn't expecting to get rid of my DSLR gear so quickly and for as much as it went for so I had a bit more in the kitty than I expected. My last lens sold earlier this morning so I thought why not.
I'm really happy with what I've got now and just want to enjoy it to the full.
Thanks again for all the great help and encouraging comments.
