Since the turn of the year I've tried a few different things, A7rii, Pentax K1 and The GFX50.... and they're all nice bits of kit however I'm not using any of it enough to justify the cost and when I look back at last year I was taking far, far more photo's, now why's that? Probably that I had an X-Pro 2 for most of the year and an XT2 at the end, they were small, portable enough to go in any bag and with IQ that was sufficient (despite my moaning about X-Trans).

I can't deny that the output from the GFX is outstanding, but is it £8000 worth of outstanding? Probably not, I've been offered a fantastic trade in deal on my GFX which would mean that for using it for a few weeks its cost me about £300, a bargain compared to hiring one! I just need to decide now what I'm going to do with it, I could get a "dream" X-Series setup (Gripped X-T2, 16-55, 50-140, 16, 23 and my X100T or swap that for an X-Pro 2) or I could go back to full frame a get another K1 with a 24-70, 60-250 and Sigma 35mm...

Obviously Canon and Nikon are options too but I do have a bit of an affinity with Fuji and honestly AF speed aside the K1 was the best full-frame DSLR I've owned.

i can't see you lasting with the pro 2 or t2 for long. after the honeymoon period you'll switch again. i only say this as know you're into landscape - and it'll play on your mind

Yeah it is in my mind, not just for landscape but also even travel/cityscape stuff. I've had a play with Irident X-Transformer and some old X-Pro 2 files and it does minimise the issue somewhat.

I've taken at least one decent street shot with it. But a lot of the time you'll find things are rather far away for classic street. Architecture with people is playing nearer to its strength, if you see what I mean.

Thanks for your thoughts. I loved the angle of the 14mm when I rented it. I got alot of shots like this..

I think I'll be fine with the MF but I'm slightly worried the 12mm will be just *too* wide for shots like that?

I think 14mm - 18mm is a decent walk around lens to behonest. Sometimes they are just abit too wide for certain shots so therefore I take the 35mm with me.

Yeah it is in my mind, not just for landscape but also even travel/cityscape stuff. I've had a play with Irident X-Transformer and some old X-Pro 2 files and it does minimise the issue somewhat.

I've never got on with landscape shooting in x-trans, never ended up sharp/clear enough, I guess its the old "foliage" issue

But that was only in Adobe Camera Raw and it's progressed since then to render it better has it not? Then there's the likes of Iridient as you mentioned earlier which yields good results. I can't say I've noticed this issue really myself.

I'm not getting into the chat but how do you process your files? I just put them straight into ACR and process them in Photoshop. I barely touch LR. I've heard good things of Iridient but I'm not a Mac user anymore. I do know they've put it on Windows but it's in a Beta stage.

Straight into Lightroom. Pro2 and T2 files get heavily sharpening-masked so I'm only sharpening crucial areas, not for example sky, then Detail of 5, Radius of 1.0, and sharpening amount between 50 and 60 depending what it looks like at 100%. Colour-wise I usually apply the built-in Astia profile but occasionally the Velvia then warm up a bit, apply a touch of Clarity and maybe fiddle with shadows a touch. Oh, and I often apply a grad mask if needed.

Edit: I have Iridient but it rarely improves on LR.

To a large extent that is true.
The problem lies in the way Pixes are captured and how they are processed so as not to see the individual pixes as being a coloured mosaic.
The usual Bayer filter has been long enough with us for the processing algorithms to produce a familiar response at 100% , it is not a true representation of the pixels captured but one we are familiar with and it responds in a way to raw processing in an equally familiar way. However it is not a true representation of either what the sensor captured nor of the original scene.

The Xtrans sensor has an entirely different colour filter array. it can not be processed using the same algorithms as the bayer filter. The first efforts at producing algorithms that could be used in our usual raw processors was not well liked but have improved over time to produce results similar to what we are used to. However seen at 100% and with some attributes tweaked in a raw-processor, it can produce some strange patterning effects. This is largely because the raw-processors are still using some algorithms devised for the earlier bayer filters.... this will undoubtedly improve still further.
However when viewed at normal sizes these effects can not be seen at all,and are never seen in prints.

What we see from any sensor at 100% is purely invention, as every visible pixel has been re calculate from a single color red green blue mosaic of the neighboring 4 coloured pixels. in to a new pixel representing one from a full color and tone. However if you pixel peep at the unnatural 100% or more, you may well see differences, where the compromises in the algorithms differ.

The Xtrans sensor uses a different array, comprising an 8 pixel repeated arrangement, that is less likely to cause moire in patterned images. the distribution of pixel of each color is also different. Though most people much prefer the resulting Fuji colours. As fuji sensors do not need a low pass filter the images are naturally sharper.


In real life Xtrans sensor produce sensational images, as can be seen on these forums.

I like those very much, and I agree MF doesn't have to be an issue. But it may be a bit wide. Here's one of mine with it, to give you an idea...

Fair review and good advice. I bought a used XT1 to tried out Fuji and end up selling all Nikon full frame stuff and invest in better fui primes. XT2 is great but the XT1 does everything I need.

If you are shooting 4K video then 'S' batteries are the weapon of choice. Otherwise for stills work myself and many others are happy with the White Ex-Pro battereies

There are no 3rd party S batteries. They are only needed for prolonged extended use such as video because of their improved heat handling.

Ex-Pro Whites will do anything your likely to want Sir,

I certainly wouldn't recommend a generic one. I would only consider one specifically designed for the T2, and even then I'd be dubious. Pity you can't try before you buy!

I bought the Fittest one for £13 and I've found it quite good as I have biggish hands and struggled to hold the camera one handed with a decent size lens on, the thumb grip gives much better grip and its never gotten in way for me.

All three of the scheduled venues are within walking distance of each other resulting in no ideal space for parking. This means I have had to think and plan what kit I am going to take with me as this is going to be a minimal kit wedding

This is what I am taking with me ..... its going to be a documentary style wedding shoot which the clients are happy with, the pressure of any makeup/getting ready photos has been avoided at the clients request.

Yes, just a single XT-2 as the client is a friend who is pretty relaxed about it all.
My old Sony A7RII's only had single SD card slots.
It's going well so far but I'll need to examine the files in post

Single SD card slots aren't really an issue, massively unlikely to get a failure and even then they can usually be recovered.

Camera bodies however, I've had two (Nikons) completely fail on me in the past 10 years and another where the battery jammed in the slot (think it swelled up) and couldn't be replaced.
