The Fabulous Fuji X owners thread

Great shot George. Really captures the moment.

Many thanks Sir, much appreciate your comments.(y)

George.

A way round this is, as long as you record raw + jpeg with jpegs going to a card in slot 2, is to switch over to the jpeg card for magnified viewing. To do this, double-click on the centre of the joystick when in playback mode and select Slot 2.
Brilliant - thanks! That is indeed how I have it setup, and I didn't realise it was only looking at card 1 and you couldn't magnify raws! That's much better :)

Can someone convince me that I need to upgrade my X-E1 to the X-T1 with the 18-135 lens please. I really can't decide.

What do you want (a few for starters):-
  • Its faster, a lot faster at just about everything
  • AF much quicker, and got tracking modes as well
  • Weather Resistant (as is 18-135)
  • The EVF, once you've used an X-T1 EVF you will hate going back to the X-E1
  • Its very cheap at the moment, though unfortunately your X-E1 is only worth buttons
  • Gots loads more bells and whistles
  • More things on dials/buttons and less fiddling about in the menus
  • WiFi - if you like that sort of thing!
Negative, no in built flash, but really when did you last use it?

Thank you. I want a lighter, more portable camera for holidays/days out instead of lugging my D750 around. Still keeping the Nikon but love the Fuji files.
Alsi love the X-E1 but its rubbish in low light.
The X-T1 seems a bit extavagant but considering it's price at the moment with the above mentioned lens, it's a bit of a steal. Just got to convince myself to go for it ha.

The XE1 has the same sensor as the Xpro1 I believe? if so, it isn't that bad, and not a million miles behind the XT-1. I have the XT-1 and Xpro-1 at, and there's not much in the difference end image quality-wise. Some actually prefer the colours, especially for skin tone, on the Pro-1.

The differences are really in the build quality, controls and extras - like better AF and MF options, better EVF, faster in general and the ability to add a battery grip.

Just a heads-up - if anyone has a minty XF18 mm f2 that they don't want anymore then I have a wanted-to-buy posted
Cheers

I don't have an X-T2. But what a great tip..

For anyone without an X-T2 / X-Pro 2, but with the same magnification issue, just shoot RAW + JPG and the camera will use the JPG in playback mode by default, giving you better zoom ability.

Beautifully captured, great work! The Sonnar is one of my all time favourite lenses. I might have mentioned that a few times on here lol

The Jena is a lovely little lens, is there a difference between this and the Sonnar? It says Jena on the front of mine.

The X-T10 is just as good in low light as the X-T1, and if the EVF isn't as quite good, it's still better than the X-E1 by all accounts and certainly just fine with me!

Only if they go to the same card. I had my X-T2 set for raw+jpeg but with the raws going to card 1 and the jpegs to card2. The camera defaults to looking on card1 for the preview so wouldn't zoom in beyond 2x until I switched to card2 previews after the tip above :)

Cheers George, your post confused me at first before edit :D

Yeah ! You and me both. I get moments like that when I really don't have a clue what the heck I'm doin'.:D:D

George.

Just ordered the X-T1 with the 18-135 lens from the Fuji refurb store. Hadn't realised it came with the little flash unit so that swayed it in the end. Looking forward to Tuesday/Wednesday now. £725 bargain.

That wee flash is actually alright if you get creative :D

Yep, it was a reminder for all the non xt2 x pro 2 users, whose cameras only have one slot ;)

So the xt20 arrival has got me thinking, it looks great value over the canon M5. The lenses, 16_55, 18_55 and 18_135. What's the focus speed like on the 18_135? I currently have the canon equivalent on a 7dmk2. And is there much iq difference between the two wider zooms?

How did you manage getting up there?
Did you use Foxes Path or go over the top? Which leads on to where did you park? At the bus stop or in the little pull in on the rough road from Lon Garret.

Standard route, Park at Allt Ddu and Fox's Path . The wind was absolutely howling, knocked me off my feet a couple of times and blew down the tripod too, made it to Lernion to discover I'd forgotten my tape measure at home, but did find what I was looking for up there at least. From what I could see from Lernion Aberdaron and Llangristiolus are totally impassable to cross over to the other side of Garrett but I will try and confirm again next week maybe when I return with the tape measure.

Alan, what made you go for the 10-24 after the 14? I am looking to rent a lens to complement my 35/f2 on a trip to Cuba. Currently looking at those two lenses so I'd appreciate any thoughts!

The way I see it the 10-24 gives me more flexibility, but the 14mm is half the weight which might be useful!

I wanted 10mm in non fisheye form and the 10-24 is currently the only way to do that. I like the sound of the 8-16mm f2.8 though!

Yes you do. Focus speed, camera speed, viewfinder size and button position are all far better on the T.

The 16-55 is great but silly money. No OIS but fast with great IQ. Auto focus is fast!
The 18-55 is also great, is barely any worse for IQ than the 16-55 but has OIS and is a little slower at the big end.auto focus again is fast!
The 18-135 is slower again than the 18-55 but the OIS is next level, noticeably better and with the focal range makes for a great all purpose lens. AF is from experience quicker than the 18-55 so if your not a bokeh whore it's the best of the bunch. If you want bokeh and the highest IQ, get some primes to go along with it.

Ah yes - I realised that after I posted my comment. Still getting used to having two card slots - got a bit confused earlier today when I couldn't find my videos and it took me a while to realise I was previewing the wrong card!

Bother! I had my eye on that one, just hoping the OH would go away for a few days so I could safely order it, she was going then... changed her mind. :(

Refurb store no longer offers new XT1 kits as they did a few weeks ago. Actual camera stores still seem to want a grand or so for a XT1. Looks like I might end up buying second hand, but I bet those who boght the kit will sell separate!

I bought it from the refurb store last night. Still got 4 left with the 18-135 lens like the one I got or also available with the 18-50 f2.8. Both £799 but with the discount code it comes down to £719 pus £5.99 postage. Too good a deal to miss and I couldn't resist.

The refurb store still has 4 in stock though? Use the discount code to bring it down to £725...

Any of you MF lens users know of the 'Super Multi coated Takumar F4 Asahi 200mm'? Thinking it might be good for my garden birds

Looks a big b****r, wondering how it might handle on the XT-1

I love all the Takumars :) I have an early Asahi 200/3.5 preset here which I must get around to trying! Would you not be better off with 300 or 400mm for birds though?

Optically they were very good Sir, bit soft on the edges wide open but that obviously wouldn't matter on the Fooj being APS-C. The early copies did tend to have a few issues with the lens coatings so it's worth checking that out thoroughly. Other than that they were/are good lenses.(y)

Hope this helps.,

George.

I won't be doing much outside of garden birds really with a specific lens like this, would be nice to have more reach but until I can afford the 100-400 Fuji I'll settle for a good old MF lens :) I don't want anything too heavy, as I'll hand holding and obviously focusing by hand on the go too. I think this one is 550g, which is very manageable. Atm the longest I have is the 135mm, so I have been trying to capture more a scene, of the birds, than individuals. I think with a little more reach I might get away with being outside, not having to shoot through the window. The more distance I can give the less skittish the birds will be maybe

I kinda wish I hadn't sold my 55-200, but then I wouldn't have my 35 1.4. I may even buy another used at some point.

I will no doubt be cropping a lot even with a 200mm, so that shouldn't be much of an issue? I'll have to do a bit of research on it but sounds good for the money :)

I don't know anything about these lenses but I have spotted that the name keeps cropping up :D

Do you have any idea how the primes compare to the mass market SLR primes including Canon FD, Olympus Zuiko and Minolta Rokkor? I have FD, Zuiko and Rokkor lenses and of these the Rokkors seem the best but I'm just a bit bored and suffering a little gas :D so I wonder if Tukumars would be better/interesting/whatever but I don't know anything about them.

I'd be looking mostly at 24, 28, 35, 50, 85 and 135mm.

So long as you're good with manual focusing, and using an adapter, these old lenses can easily match modern ones in terms of end IQ, from my experience using them at least. They're never going to be great for action photography, but for portraits, landscape, macro etc - some of the old brigade have some really nice glass and character. The wider FL you go for the easier to manually focus too. My only concern with a 200mm is the heft/physical size of the lens, and how sharp it would be wide open. As I would want to use it that way all of the time, get as much light as possible.

One really annoying thing I have discovered though, and this only applies to macro rings, that they won't bloody fit on the M42 adapter I have :( I bought them with my Helios 44-2 in mind for macro and the rings just will not go on the M42 adapter. They fit fine, with a little fiddling, on my Fuji 35 1.4. Puzzling and annoying, as the adapter fits the camera no bother. Should be the exact same mount/fit
