The Fabulous Fuji X owners thread

Well now I've actually got an autofocus lens it seems I'm going to have to figure this thing out as its horrible, feels like a sluggish all points sort of point and shoot from five years ago, much worse than than the EM1 I used to have.... But I've not had time to look at the config yet so fingers crossed its okay once configured :)

Anyone want a free remote shutter release for their XT1?
Ive got a cheapy version of an RR90 going for anyone who needs it.

I must confess I'm finding the 27mm a bit restrictive for street photography in Bangkok, which is where I am at the mo. It's seems the 18mm is only about £175 here. What's people's opinion on the 18? If find I'm using my iPhone 6 more than my X-T1.

Get a good one, with a firm aperture ring, and it's great. Not the widest of maximum apertures, but optically excellent and under-rated.

Looks like I will be planning to join you guys again, a couple of questions if I may with a XT-1

What is the 100-400 with and without t/c like?

What grip for the XT-1 would people recommended

And lastly whats the opinion between the 35mm f1.4 & f2?

Many Thanks

Its very close, the AF of the older 35 is noisier and slower and its not weather protected but its generally regarded as being a little sharper.
The new lens though is smaller, lighter and the AF is very fast, I preferred the new one myself, its also cheaper!

I'll try to answer these for you Graham.(y)

1) The 100-400mm without the tc is "Excellent", I've not used it personally with the tc but a buddy of mine has had some very encouraging results with it.

2) I use the VG-XT1 battery grip and would not want to work without it, and certainly with the 100-400mm on board as the camera would then be much better balanced.

3) I had both on appro and preferred F1.4 version, it's not as quick to auto focus (but I usually work manual so not bothered) but IMHO it's marginally the better of the two optically.

George.

Thanks guys. With the 35mm which ever you fancy then :-)
I've been advised the to a dodgy wrist to lighten the camera gear so coming from Nikon myself. I know Fuji is not the lightest but seems to be good iq and somewhat lighter than what I have now.

I'm sure you'll not be disappointed Graham, it's a superb system to be using.(y)

The 100-400 with tc is very very good and highlights how exceptional the Fuji ois is. Handholding a lens at 800mm equivalent is truly awesome.

Without, it's superb. With the 1.4x it's still fantastic and with the 2x, merely great! Hoping that the firmware updates I have downloaded but not yet installed will elevate it even further, especially with the 2x.

None! The joy (for me, at least) of the Fuji system is its reduced weight and bulk; screwing on extra weight and bulk kind of defeats the object. I find that the X-T1 balances almost perfectly on the 100-400's tripod foot when fully retracted with no TC and at full reach with either of the TCs attached. While the X-T1 and that lens isn't light, it is compared to any DSLR system with anything close to the same reach.

Thanks George had a dabble a while back, but had then I couldn't justify running two systems. Im looking forward to it still got a XE-1 converted to infa red.

Cheers Jonathan hows the D810?

The grip would come in handy for portrait shots when I'm out with the grandkids, not so little now makes you feel old.
Thats what I was thinking how about the weight/reach ratio with the 100-400.

Decisions what do people think of 16-55 f2.8, I have a 14mm already and maybe adding this would be OK for landscapes maybe negate having to get a 10-24, how much worse is it for portraits than the 56 f1.2.
I do fancy a 90mm f2 :-)

I have the 16-55 and really like it. It's used as my all rounder. Excellent for weddings. It's big and well built. For portraits I go with the 90 or 56 as I have them in the bag also. The 90 is my most used lens. It doesn't seem to get much love on this forum for some reason, but it's very sharp, quick to focus and works for me as both a portrait lens and a nature lens.

I love the 90 too! Complaints about no stabilisation on the 16-55 and 90 just means people have poor technique. You shouldn't need it at these focal lengths.

@Mr Perceptive thanks for the offer, I'll no doubt be back again, I've got an itching to dive deeper into the salt industry. The Tata plant on a A530 as well - that has got to be a backdrop for some car photography!

Some people, old ones like myself who have been taking photos since 1958, aren't as steady as we used to be.

Beautiful shots :) I used to love 135mm on full frame, but find myself shooting wider and wider these days. Otherwise would be all over the 90 as results always look great.

I don't own the 56 f1.2 but I have used one on loan from my local camera shop, I found that when using the zoom at f2.8/55 mm there is very little, if any, difference in optical quality. The 16-55 F2.8 plus the 90 mm f2 is my standard portrait kit. I also have a 55-200 to give a zoom option for portraits and use both it and the 90 mm with my 62 mm Zeiss Softar filter, which gives a result which most ladies love.

Well @Mr Perceptive looks like I'm free Tues/Weds/Thurs this week. Depending on the weather I thought I might have a wander round your backyard. I fancy some of this industrial dereliction.
Trouble is that Google Earth and OS maps don't really tell me where are the best spots. Any chance of some pointers to save me wandering about aimlessly? I don't mind a mild trespass, in fact I probably welcome some!

A few more from around Bangkok. I really am struggling with 27 as a focal length. I need to cart my 18-55 with me I think.

Thanks for all the help guys, trouble is it seems most/all fuji lens are pretty good. But since I got a 14mm (which I use on my XE-1 info-red converted camera) thinking of the 16-55 and maybe the 55-200 for landscape trips, 90mm for portraits and 100-400 for the longer stuff. But then the 10-24 looks tempting.

The 18-135 works well in IR as well, I use that and the 14 on my IR X-E1

I definitly not free on Tues, but might be free on Weds or Thursday.

Locations:-

The Brunner Mond works at Winnington, you can get down both sides of the island, on public footpaths, but as soon as you are visible on the one behind you will attract the eagle eyes of the sucrity team who will immediately assume that you are going to cross the bridge and go onto the island!!! If you park up at the Anderton Boat Lift, and walk back along the Trent and Mersey, you can then walk down some steps to the bridge over the Weaver at Winnington, footpaths either side of the bridge lead you down either side of the Brunner Mond Wharf Island. Island a favourite of Urban Explorers.

Another location is the works on the A530 between the A556 and A559, I usually park in the side road opposite the Rudheath turn and walk along the canal bank, this is the site with the disused electrical power generation plant, again security!! Another Urban Explorer target.

The wrecked boats, and general boatyard dereliction are on the Weaver near Sir John Deanes College, I would usually park in Weir street just of A553, and walk under viaduct and up canal path, locks to visit as well. Locks near here as well, but the better ones are at Vale Royal Locks

Dutton Weir, and Old Horse Bridge is also worth a visit, nearby railway viaduct as well. Park in disused Italian Restaurant/Pub just off A49, near where it cross the Weaver, and walk up banks of the Weaver.

If I'm around I'll happily accompany you, but I have a busy week, Mon - Birmingham, Tues, Reading and then need to spend a day near Church Stretton on Wed/Thurs, I'll know which day I' might be available by Tues morning, and will drop you a line.

That would be me! I've been shooting with Fuji since the X10 and ended my love-affair with the X-T1. :)

I've had a chance to play with the X-T2 and I think that the shortcomings of the X-T1 have been addressed enough for me to give them another chance. I've got an X-T2 on pre-order and I'll be adding a 10-24, 16-55, 50-140 and the 100-400 to the order (hopefully I'll manage to find some decent secondhand ones). I used to shoot a lot of fast moving and and erratic subjects and the AF on the X-T1 isn't up to scratch so I went back to Nikon. I'm not shooting anywhere near as much wildlife/aviation stuff these days so I'm going back to a system I enjoyed with some lenses that I love. :)

Yup. Sure is. Everyone comes back eventually!
The T2 does look pretty good. Not got one on order myself - yet. But it's going to happen, I just know it:)

I'm perfectly happy with the X-T1, but as and when they release the X-T2 in silver, well it's inevitable isn't it?
