The Fabulous Fuji X owners thread

I always convert the RAW files to dng on import to Lightroom. As I understand things there is no loss of quality, just a removal of extraneous matter that takes up storage space.
Only drawback I can see is that it takes a bit longer.
I may be wrong though. I definitely remember being wrong before - just the once!

:plus1: to that.

George.

Thanks. Back in the day when I had my 5D I saved the raw files and kept them separate like a film negative. The finished image I saved as a tiff.

For my X-T1 I currently have a 35 f1.4, and the 14 f2.8.

I plan to buy the Samyang 12 f2 closer to the summer to go shooting the milkyway. I most enjoy shooting Landscapes and I LOVE the 14mm.

I intend to sell the 35mm eventually and for Christmas I am going to get EITHER the 16-55 f2.8 OR the 18-55 f2.8-f4... In fact that is my dilemma. Which to go for?

Things going through my head...

Is the 16-55 better enough to warrant the money?
I know ill use the 18-55 in "out with friends" situations more since its smaller.
I've never had a "Pro Zoom" and for the first time one is within reach.
I love my wide prime but rather than go with mid range primes Id prefer a standard zoom.
The 16-55 will be better for Landscapes where I have to zoom in a little as it's sharper.

HELP!!!

Well I started converting to dng when I was using the 5D. There is an awful lot of information on each file that just doesn't relate in anyway to the picture. There's that big sidecar that is seemingly obligatory and lots of other guff. The dng just has the stuff you need - the photo information. The rest is wasted space and you have to buy storage for it. Plus...dng are supposed to be universally accepted unlike RAW which are specific to each maker and you always need an update when you change cameras.

Tried to give the xt10 a decent chance again tonight. Still can't get on with it. Going to have to go back. :(

If you're comfortable with the weight go with the 16-55. By all accounts it's a beast of a lens and just about as good as any Fuji prime lens at its given length.

I had the same problem with mine, I couldn't really warm to it. Luckily, it developed a fault and the decision was made for me to return it. Got myself an XT1 as a replacement and love it. It fits my hands perfectly, and is just a brilliant camera.

For those thinking of lenses, don't discount the 50-200. It's not as fast as the 50-140, but it has lovely rendering and gives very nice subject isolation for portraits. The stabilisation is pretty nifty too.

Ordered my new tripod tonight for the XT1 from amazon warehouse.
Got myself a Manfrotto compact action for £40.
Next stop - filters

Looks like a more up to date version of the Manfrotto Modo one I got a few years ago. Barely got used as it was to lightweight for the DSLR but it's perfect for the Fuji X cameras.

The reviews seem to favour it well for compacts over DSLRs and I need something that folds small enough to fit in a backpack when I'm out on the bike.
Incidentally I originally planned to get the compact light but the ball head looked flimsy compared to the pistol grip of the compact action, plus the price difference was mere pennies

I do like the pistol grip, ideal for my poorly hands and yes, it folds down very small given how high it goes.

On the other hand, DNG is proprietary to Adobe. And storage is cheap. And you can't apply Fuji filters to DNG files in LR as you can with RAF. Just saying, no axe to grind either way.

That's the way I look at it too. When I add up the value of my camera gear I really can't get myself worried about the cost of storage. 2TB portable drives can be bought now for less than I used to pay for a 32GB CF card.

I'll post a link to this again as it's worth repeating. Even if you have no intention of changing processing software you never know what the future will bring and the extra information in the RAF file might make a difference.

Read into that what you may.

According to Scott Kelby who probably has no idea what he is talking about...
Adobe developed the dng format as an open format so anyone can write to that specification.
Adobe are concerned that one day a manufacturer may develop a format that isn't a type of RAW which would prevent owners using, and by default paying for, Abode products.

Welcome my man. A free card as well. Lucky you.

Anyway, my news. Just to please Mr Perceptive I've been to his favourite camera shop today. Walked out with a pocket stuffed with £20 notes. I kid you not. A little bit of Fuji gear as well.
First port of call? Natwest to empty my pockets!

As I said before, I've no axe to grind either way. Many years ago I used to convert all my Canon files to DNG, but now I can't be bothered. For my purposes there are more advantages to keeping the native files. Others may see things differently. :)

Wow that sounds like a good move Frank, does that mean you're 100% Fooj now ?

George.

100% George.
Although I have kept my Canon flash units which work in manual mode on Yn trigers. Fooj don't seem to have anything comparable so it seems silly to dispense with them.

We did the same Frank, when we went virtually 100% Fooj earlier on this year for all of our Wedding/Social work etc and for our pit lane/paddock F1 contracts. We all absolutely love the system and have not regretted changing for a moment.
Unfortunately we have had to re-invest since then in FF DSLR stuff ready for next year, as at the moment Fuji just don't have the long lenses that we will need for track side work that we have agreed to take on together with other sporting events. If the Fuji long lenses show their face then we will be 100% Fooj without a doubt.

We also held onto our Nikon flash stuff for the same reason as yourself, but fortunately one of our staff members had already knocked us up a little box of tricks to fit the hot shoe of the Fooj cameras enabling us to use them dedicated to the Nikon flash units. So with a SU800 Nikon controller mounted on top of our little box of tricks we can control the Nikon SB800 flash units from the camera. God knows how he managed to work it all out and make the boxes but they certainly work pretty good. (y)

George,
I use the Yn 622c TX on the hotshot and 622s under the flash. Allows full manual control from on camera. No ETTL but I never use that.

We've reached the same solution in different ways.

Now about this pit lane access, best pal.
I'm free that day!!!

I'm not familiar with these Frank.

I obviously know who makes them but when you say full control (with the exception of ETTL), does that mean you can just choose which units fire via different banks/channels etc or are you able to also control the power output of each flash in manual mode from the X-T1.

I'm not familiar with anything Canon so I'm just assuming that your flash units can operate very much the same as the Niks ie different power outputs from Full power down to 1/128th power. If they can do that then I would certainly invest in them as I should imagine they work via radio which would be an advantage over the system I am using which works via infra red and not always very good in bright sunlight etc for fill flash techniques.

I've tried some cheapy's from flea-bay that certainly work with the X-T1 but there is such a delay in firing the flashes that I can only use them at shutter speeds lower that 1/60th to avoid shutter blind cut off which is not a very satisfactory situation.

This should help.... ignore TTL for Fuji.

George,

That shot from twist is the controller that sits on your hotshoe.
Some blurb about it here....

http://www.lightingrumours.com/feature-guide-to-the-yongnuo-yn-622-for-canon-2672

You will need the 622 transceivers to sit under your flash units.
Lots of groups, lots of channels all independantly adjustable.
Again, as twist says ETTL doesn't work; manual only.
I use a maximum of four guns, frequently in three groups with different power ratings and zoom settings on each group.

The Canon units work well, but I don't know about Nikon. Obviously they are called YN-622N-TX for the controller and YN-622N for the transceiver.

We could really do with finding someone who has migrated from Nikon to give us a report.

Very many thanks you two guys for getting back to me on this, it's very much appreciated.(y)
