The Fabulous Fuji X owners thread

First shots with my new X-T1. Still learning how it really works but happy so far. The LR6CC tweaks are so different from my old Nikon kit so steep learning curve there. The only thing that worries me is the EVF display has very little colour saturation, very washed out except during focus. It was almost impossible to detect colour saturation changes when manipulating a circular polariser so any tips there would be greatly appreciated.
Similar shot posted on the critique forum. This one better illuminated.

Some interesting shots there. As regards the polariser question, I think you'll find a similar problem with any current EVF. The best workaround seems to be to use a "system" polariser such as Lee which will permit you to align the filter before mounting it on the camera. As you can clip the pola onto the mount without changing its orientation, you can see the rotation effects clearer.

Thanks Stephen, I have just increased the evf colour saturation in the menu and that does help. I was hoping not to have to use a Lee type filter system as it is more weight to carry. Weight was a major factor in my reason to adopt Fuji over my old Nikon.

Well it'll still be useful....you also don't have a telephoto zoom do you?

Yep, this is the argument for it...

Colin, thanks for the tips. Maybe i would find it annoying then. Perhaps the new X-T could be the answer.

Took this earlier on, first time i've took a 'proper' bump shot. Good job he's 6 days overdue really!! :D

@jakeblu That first Bluebell shot Steve is very nice indeed. Good to see you getting on so well with the X-T1.(y)

George.

The 135mm is great fun for shooting into the sun! The XF lenses are so good I haven't really used any MF lenses on the XT1, to be honest for some reason lenses that were great on other bodies just seem a bit naff on the Fuji, the Canon 58mm f1.2 I used to love on the A7R was so bad on the fuji I sold it. I haven't dared use my Konica 40mm, I don't wan't to be disappointed!

To be fair Alan, I was never too impressed with the Konica 40/1.8 on my a7. It was nice and small, and focused well, but needed to be stopped down quite a bit for really good results. Every Fujinon if have seems to be fin sharp from wide open :) And the 27/2.8 is actually wider than the 40/1.8 on full frame (which is actually closer to 43mm apparently!).

Thanks George, after a shaky start I'm really enjoying this little camera

Cracking set there David

Anybody using nd grads on their X-T1's and if so which ones?

I've got a formatt hitec landscape set. Maybe not quite as good as lee but fine for me. I've got the 67x85 size which are fine on the 14mm.

I have some Lee Seven5 filters, but I haven't had much chance to use them yet. Hope to remedy that next week in the Dales (wife and dog's patience permitting) .

Seven5s here, great filters but only just work on the Samyang 12mm.

I was thinking of getting the 67mm filter kit, seems about my price range. You happy with the results they produce?

The Lee Seven5 would be ideal but a little pricey for me

Yep they do me just fine. I've no doubt the Lee system is slightly better but I'm just not prepared to pay that much more for a slight difference. If I did a lot more landscape I would consider them.
I bought the landscape kit which came with the holder, reverse grad, soft grad and a 6 stop filter and holder for them. Then I was given the same kit again with the added polariser.

nice pics,thoughts on the lens?

I was a little shocked when I opened the box and saw the size and felt the weight but after attaching the lens it felt fairly balanced. I haven't a grip for the xt1 but it didn't feel out of place attached.

The lens hood made out of plastic was very hard to attach and even worse taking off and I can't imagine it will last the lifetime of the lens far to flimsy and made out of plastic.

The build however of the lens is superb and the aperture ring feels superb in use. The zoom function is very smooth but sure at the same time. The OIS seems to work very well and you can almost see the difference when it is in use.

The lens is fairly noisy however and seems to buzz slightly at all times. This maybe the OIS but I haven't tried it switched off yet. I need to use it for a few more days first but on first use I think the picture quality is superb.

The 55-200 is the real 'dark horse' of the Fuji lens line-up... I've used it for motor-racing shots and in a very dim church and in both situations, it performed admirably... It's just a shame I couldn't say the same about the continuous AF which is why I gave up with the Fuji system in the end.

I'm really impressed with the 55-200. I moved to the Fuji system to reduce weight and the extra focal length is far more valuable to me that f2.8. Given that the 40-150 is twice the price and twice the weight, I'm extremely happy.

@Spiritflier

Si, what was the issue with the continuous AF? I haven't used it yet.

I haven't approached the CF yet hopefully the performance will be acceptable,I really need to settle on a system.

I've been using the af-c a lot the last few days and I'm definitely beginning to trust it. It's a little bit frustrating coming from a dslr that it doesn't keep the viewfinder image in focus. But once you accept that's how the contrast af works, then it dies get a good set of images in focus. The whole xt1 experience really seems to be one of the more you use it, the more you like it. I do think I'll turn off film processing in the viewfinder though as, while classic chrome is nice, it dies have problems with helping framing and exposure for me.

Hi Marc,

In short, it hunts continuously... I've tried it on Red Kites and gave up because it just couldn't track something that small and erratic. My old 5DMKIII could and so could the D800 when I switched to Nikon. I also took the X-T1 to Oulton Park for the first round of the British GT series and essentially used manual focus for the whole day or used single point focus and kept my aperture small to give me a fighting chance. The Fuji was absolutely dire at keeping a lock on a moving target. I know it's not me because I've been at this photography lark for a fair while now and I'd like to think that I've got a good grasp of the basics. :D

For anything that's static, the Fuji system is outstanding but I need something that will do everything well rather than just a few things. Fuji glass on the other hand, is absolutely stellar and I'm definitely going to miss the 56mm f/1.2 and the 35mm f/1.4
