The Fabulous Fuji X owners thread

Anyone got the new i40 flashgun for their XT1?

"Yes", picked one up today. I've only managed to have a brief try out with it at the moment but it certainly seems to be a great bit of kit. Tried it using the TTL setting and it appears to be very accurate and has two stops +- exposure compensation which works just fine and the head zooms with the lens. There's a very useful pull out bounce reflector and wide diffuser that pulls out from the underside of the head. There's a small variable power video light on the front which could be very useful and gives a quite a good even light. The unit comes with a soft light diffuser that they call the softbox and is very much the same as many other makers units. It all seems to be pretty well made appart from the door enclosing the battery chamber which seems a little flimsey to me and has a strange way to close it. All comes in a well made carry case that houses everything including a stand and the softbox. Also supplied is a metal locking clip to use for attaching it to a camera bag etc. Theres only a very brief bit of operating instructions supplied, the rest of the instructions needs to be downloaded.

Many thanks (y)

Well my 56mm has arrived and I think I'm in love, can't wait for the firmware update though as I kept hitting the max shutter speed.

I'm sure you won't mind me saying, but I bet you look cool as f**k! :D

You're right and I don't mind you saying so. :agree: Here's the proof:

Just in case anyone should be interested.

Further to my post (#2482) regarding the Nissin i40 flash for the Fuji X cameras, I have now given the flash unit a good work out and would highly recommend it.

With regards to the flash compensation of +- two EV, this can be increased if needed by adding extra compensation on the camera ie +- 1 EV set on camera added to +- 2 EV on the flash will give you +- 3 EV, a very useful thing to have. There are two TTL exposure modes, (Auto) which does not allow any various compensation settings on the flash just straight TTL flash, and (TTL) which does allow the compensation settings on the flash. I honestly can't see the need for both and feel just the main (TTL) setting would suffice.

The manual power settings are very useful and offer ratios from full power 1/1 down to 1/256 power and also the flash can be triggered from another flash (optically) in manual mode, or wirelessly. Two small things I found to be not quite so good are as I mentioned in my last post, the battery chamber door feels a little flimsy to me but with a bit of practice it is not quite so bad, and the two adjustment setting wheels (especially the larger one) are easily inadvertently changed without you realizing it.

I have also added the Nissin SC-01 universal cord to my system and have found it to work extremely well with this unit, and being a universal cord it will also work with full dedication on other systems and dedicated flash units ie Nikon, Canon, Sony, etc etc.

All in all an "Excellent" bit of kit.

George.

Has anyone any thoughts or rumours on how much the proposed 140-400mm lens will be. I'm interested because if its as good as the other lenses I would be tempted to sell off the rest of my DSLR kit and get it for wildlife.

Here's a first-impressions review of the new i40... Seems pretty good. (y)

LINK

I've had a good look at the mock-up for the 140-400 and in terms of size, it looks pretty compact. How it'll pan out in real life is another thing entirely but I have no doubt that it'll be optically brilliant. :) From what I've been told, we won't see it until the latter half of next year but nobody's saying anything about a predicted price. I'd expect to see it appear between £1200 and £1500.

As a guess I would say £1000 > £1500 quid, all depending on how fast it is and if weather proof. The RRP for the 55-200mm is £579.00 I believe, and the new f2.8 50-140mm is £1249.00. I was hoping and budgeting for £1200.00.

Thanks for that Simon, kind of in the same area I was thinking it would be... its a lot of moolah. Not sure the DSLR sale would cover it, but by the time it comes out I should have a few hundred saved as well... in theory so long as I don't go and blow it on something else. :D

Looking at the new Sigma and Tamron lenses although 600mm long they are starting at around the £1000.00 mark and when you take into account the only 18-135 WR lens was from Pentax before Fuji released theres and nearly twice as much @ £700. I dont know what else we have to go on, perhaps the new Nikon 80-400mm which is approx £1700.00.

Hard to work out when you look at the different prices above. Fuji glass is good though and they charge a premuim for it!

It will be nice if Sigma and Tamron get into the act, it gives more options.

Why shouldn't they? Optically, their glass is absolutely stunning... I spent a bit of time playing with the prototype 50-140 and the images from it were sharp enough to shave with! :D

If you look at something like the XF 56mm f/1.2, it's still considerably less money than the Canon and Nikon equivalents and in terms of performance, either matches or exceeds them. My only concern with the system at the moment is the continuous AF... It's just not quite up to the standard of a DSLR yet but I don't think it'll be long before they sort it. :)

Perhaps it didn't come across properly, the glass is good and they charge good money for it as it's that good.............. Although I do think some of there lenses are a little juicy as an example the 35mm when paying RRP, I think Fuji realise this as per all there offers and promotions to try and get people into the system. I dont think it would have been such a popular system if the excellent deals we had earlier in the year with the Xpro and lens cashback offers and all the offers since.

I sold my XT a couple of weeks ago and have now been using the Nikon D750 and the AF is something else, after coming from Fuji. But, I have seen the difference and improvements between the XE1, Xpro & Xt1 I have owned over the last couple of years. They are not far away, and will catch up soon.

I guess it all boils down to picking the right tool for the right job... I've made a commitment to the Fuji system for the time being but I've already said to a few friends that if the AF doesn't allow me to do what I've been doing so far with DSLRs, then I'll probably grab another 5DMKIII and a long lens (I miss the AF from that camera). :)

Thanks for the link - an interesting review - can't wait to road test the flash at the weekend

All the best

I'm in the same boat although I'm not as concerned about wildlife shots as I used to be it would still be nice to just commit to the system and not worry about a DSLR at all. I have enough problems stopping myself buying film cameras nevermind another digital system. :)

I was exactly in the same boat. If Fuji hadn't delayed the Tele by 12 months I wouldn't have looked to change. My main interest now is garden bird photography and due to disabilities I was finding it difficult with manual focussing my 300mm f4 legacy lens. The 200mm & 230mm were too short for my needs, so I had a system which wasnt doing what I needed from it. I did find the AF okay for my needs, although the D750 does show up it's slowness.

I have found some plastic swarf ?? in the view finder of my D750 yesterday so it's going back. Im now in a situation do I have a replacement or my money back, I have some doubts with the D750, with their light leak issue and this VF problem.

The 'light leak' isnt an issue. What about the XT1 mushy pad and real light leak? Your first XT1 was faulty wasnt it?

My refurb had a mushy pad, the problem I had was it was freezing on me. The new one from Panamoz was perfect.

So why write the D750 off on your experience when others have nothing but praise. After all its the same thing you went through with the Fuji.

I had no problem with the mushy pad, another one of those things that were just blown out of proportion to what it was, almost most cameras i have seen reviewed the reviewer finf something with the controls not to his liking :)

I think you need to read my posts again.

I haven't written the D750 off, I have some doubts in my mind and I have been disapointed with the JPEG's.

The only logical reason to swap the X-T1 with the 23mm f/1.4 would be to make space in your camera bag for the smaller X100T, the latter could fit in your coat pocket.... New firmware update around the corner for the X-T1, it's going to be like having a brand new camera !

It's just GAS, if I'm honest... the only rational justification would be things like going on tour with my band... I wouldn't want five grand of glass in the tour bus in addition to five grand in guitars and amps. A beat-up X100S would be the perfect companion for this. I know, I'm rationalising spending money again. ;)

Tripods. What are we all using? I'm still carrying my big tripod with me - the one I use with the 5D3. This seems to be a contadiction in terms. I've got the XT-1 as a more compact system especially for long days on the hoof. Carrying a big tripod seems to go against that principle. So what is there that is nice and sturdy enough but light and easily portable?

Problem is that the tripods with larger diameter legs are still sturdier regardless of the camera size and weight. Haven't really changed my strategy, for casual wandering I take an older version series 1 Gitzo (G1158) and for more planned stuff the series 3 systematic.
Thinking about getting a new smaller top plate http://www.markins.com/4.0/html_en/th-300.php for the series 3 and carrying that with me at all times, folds down to 55cm and only weighs 1.75kg

Thanks. I didn't mention that I use an L bracket nearly all the time. That just means that I need a different head so a tripod without a supplied head is needed.

My present tripod is 1.8Kg without the head, so I'm looking to reduce that quite a bit - if possible.

I realise that the bigger tripods are by definition sturdier, I'm just trying to beat the system!!!

There were some user reviews earlier in the year for lighter Redged and Befree tripods etc................Maybe worth having a search.

Thanks again. I'd not thought about Ffordes. The 425K caught my eye with the RNB1N head. Ffordes seem to be doing this combo. Think I'll wait till the Xmas parcel hiatus has settled down then order one.

For travel, I use a Giottos Vitruvian with a Manfrotto head (to keep the QR plates the same over my whole camera/support system.) I also have a couple of Manfrotto 190s, one older Al one and one newer CF one. The X-T1's also light enough to go on a small assortment of other supports I have such as a Gorillapod SLRZoom (with a Manfrotto head) and a Pod beanbag as well as a custom made clamp that I picked up at a local show.

Thanks Nod. I did look at the Vetruvian but discounted it because it came with a head that is no use to me. I'm on Arca across my system so would have to jettison the Giottos head then buy another. I need either an inbuilt Arca head or no head at all so I can fit my own. Hence the search!

I use the 3 Legged Thing 'Brian' and a 'Keith' (when I can prise it away from my daughter). They're not cheap but they're damned good tripods and the company are great to deal with if you ever have any issues. :)
