The Fabulous Fuji X owners thread

I dont like iso on the left, doesnt make sense to me.

It makes perfect sense, when you consider that you are likely to use the speed dial and exposure EV more frequently than the ISO dial. There are more right handed people than left handed people, hence Fuji decided to locate it there according to my local Fuji Rep. Quite a bit of thought went into designing this camera.

In addition, it follows the X Pro 1s form of keeping the the speed dial and EV dial in the same position.

Where would you have located it just out of idol curiosity ?

The majority of my shooting I have ISO set to auto (up to 3200) or 200, so for my type of shooting it is only a two click operation. I do wish however that Fuji would have used the same lockable mechanism they have on the shutter speed dial on the ISO dial

I agree, I wonder what the reasoning was but I'll find out.

I would have liked to have seen in on the back on the right, located as a simple up down wheel with an auto iso on/off button next to it. THen I wouldnt have to take my eye away.

I dont shoot by riding my shutter speed. THat makes little sense. I change my iso according to conditions. Its the only variable that has little impact. THis is why auto iso works well. So in manual I know my ideal shutter speed and aperture and I change my iso according to the conditions. Surely we dont ride the shutter speed up and down and then fiddling around with iso in tandem?

With ISO on the left if you change the shutter speed all the time as well then you have to change with the right and left hand, this makes no sense. Would it not be easier to just have you ideal shutter speed set and then have a simple wheel on the back to wheel iso up and down in manual mode and a simple on off switch for auto to change to that. No need to take your eye away.

oh oh an even better idea. so you know how the x pro 1 is laid out. Imagine being able to press the fn button and you just scroll the little wheel at the back while holding down the fn button and you see the iso go up and down. Man that would be so simple and nice. and youd see your exposure change as you did it. I should design for fuji. Simple solutions that work ;)

and and, you know how you can press that wheel on the back. imagine that could be set to just turn auto iso on and off while holding down the fn button. Man im on a roll here. Making shooting more simple. Now I would be able to let my left hand do its natural job of supporting the camera while my right hand can simply control the controls. As nature intended.

You have lost me there

well, the scroll wheel on the back that you use for digital zoom in to check focus by pressing it in, why not have that so if you hold the fn button down, the pressing the rear scroll wheel you can turn auto iso on and off. would be quick and simple. on its own its digital zoom to check focus, while holding fn button it turn auto iso on and off. I mean that should all be customizable so you dont have to use it like that, but I think it makes sense, is fast and doesnt need you to take your eye away from the camera. can be done with one hand.

Hold down FN button and scroll the wheel you change iso up and down manually, hold do the fn button and press the scroll wheel is auto iso on and off.

Went to try the 10-24mm F4 lens at my local store and while I was there they had a second hand 60mm F2.4 & 14mm F2.8, so played with them all. The 10-24mm is the biggest out of the three but still very light (my 23mm F1.4 is slightly smaller). All lenses are very sharp and I was really impressed with sharpness and quality I got out of the 60mm even wide open.

Oh dear - 10-24! My kinda wideness!!! I really shouldn't get any more lenses or the X bag will get as heavy as the Nikon SLR bag!!!

I m in two minds now, sell the 16-35mm and get this lovely and sharp lens or stick with my Nikon lens.

The Fuji is equivalent to 15-36 with Image stabilisation. IMO, a very good range on a 1.5 cropped sensor

Promised myself I'd live with the 18-55 for a couple of months before any more lens purchases. But this and the 56mm are really calling my name.

Changing camera systems is fatal isn't, it can be expensive ! I just got my cheque from Fuji today for £300 from the recent promotion. I'm very, very tempted to order the 10-24mm. It's a cracker of a lens and had some very good reviews. Living in York an ultra wide angle is a must-have in my book. Somehow the £300 to offset the purchase doesn't sound to painful !

There are good reviews of this lens and comparisons with the 14mm, 23mm and the Canon 16-35mm on the Fuji rumors page today

Woot. Got an email from Fuji. My X-T1 will be home tomorrow. Can't wait, perhaps I'll be able to get the the Df out of my head.

FOR ME, 10-24 on a crop would be just about wide enough and f/4 certainly fast enough (not a huge fan of shallow DoF), especially on bodies as capable at relatively high ISO settings as the X series are. Could happily live without any stabilisation at such short lengths too - much below 1/30th and gross movements creep in which are often beyond the best OS/IS/VR/VC/OIS 's capabilities.

BUT, such width on the smaller system would pretty much render my SLR kit redundant, although there's (currently) no 180° fisheye option for the Fuji. Have to see what happens!

Frustrated today.....

I have used the supplied flash and also the Fuji EF X20 recently with no problems.

Prior to shooting a portrait today I thought I would put a couple of test shots through the X-T1 with a bit of TTL fill-in. It didn't work !

I tried both models but to no avail. I checked the 'Q' button, the lightning flash symbol was greyed out. I checked the main menu the
the flash settings were greyed out. I checked the shooting mode, aperture, speed dial, everything !

I tried various permutations both in manual and automatic. The EFX20 had a fresh set of batteries and worked in test mode but not on the camera. I really couldn't understand why it wouldn't
work. There didn't seam to be any logical explanation for it. I abandoned the X-T1 for my Nikon in the end !

A few hours later and after much head scratching, I resorted to getting the camera manual out and had a read.

It transpires that the flash will not work if the camera is set to 'silent mode' I suppose the logic there is that if you didn't want anyone to hear the shutter, you wouldn't want them
to be alerted by a flash either !

Anyway, problem sorted, flash working fine again and I have learned a lot more about the X-T1 today !

That happened to me few weeks ago and similar to you I was so frustrated. I am not sure why on earth would Fuji link the silent mode to the flash :(

Just reduce the volume to zero..no need to put it into silent mode.

Because flash is even more of a nuisance where sound is banned. the internal flash and focus assist light are also turned of, as is the timing light.

No need to go into the menu ...Just hold the Disp/back button for two seconds.
Hold the Q button for two seconds and the rear display brightens for sunlight conditions.

To turn them off just hold them again.

But the XT1 does not have a built in flash. My settings are: sound off, Focus assist: off. When I use flash is because I need it, not because auto decided that I do. Equally I do understand that Fuji didn't design the XT1 just to meet my needs ;)

They did this from day 1
I bought into the fuji system soon as it came out. At the time this flash and silent mode error was one of the most talked about issues so everyone knew about it. Now the new uptake with the xt1 are finding it. I thought fuji would have stopped this. Flash is either on or off, you dont need it to be part of some sub group as well.

Does the old 56k even exist now ? Id dread too have it now if it did, even for free it'd be a nightmare too use lol

I recently retired from BT (last October) and seem to recall dial up had been discontinued about the time I left or was just about to be stopped
