Surely your min focusing distance is the cause here?

In what way? I know DOF is very shallow, which 'may' then be the cause of the 'ghosting' on the helmet as that'd starting to be outside of the DOF, but I'd expect the area that I focused on to be sharp and not display the 'ghosting' I even tried it with the zoom focus to make sure it was focussing on the 'eye' rather than just catching the camera or something.

Sorry I just assumed you shot that photo closer than 28 cm as it looks pretty close.

Possibly because it all looks a bit crap, not just the ghosting area, would expect better even wide open

Have you tried changing the size of the focus point?

One other thought, turn face detection off, sometimes causes weird focus problems, mine does anyway

Exactly, I just can't figure out why. I'll try it on a different subject matter at some other time and see what results I get. Perhaps it just can't focus on shiny surfaces at close distance? I had the AF point on the smallest size. To me there are other parts of the frame that look sharper (although still not tack sharp)

Try the focus point next size up and definitely worth trying with face detection off. Don't think it's the shiny surface, as you say contrast is fine

I don't use face detection. I'll try it some more and see what I come up with. I've not noticed any issues before so can only think it's something to do with the subject matter and/or close distance focussing. I shall post my findings if/when I have some

Tripod mounted, snerkler or handheld? With such a shallow DoF, an mm or 2 of camera movement backwards or forwards will cause this problem.

Just been shooting lego stormtroopers with the 35mm f1.4 wide open and I'm getting weird 'ghosting' effect, and poor focussing. Both were focussed on the helmet, and in neither I would say that it is sharp, with the 2nd being quite a bit off (focus seems more on the camera to me). No matter how much I tried I got the same results. Stopping down did improve things a bit. Is this just the way the 35mm is wide open at or close to minimum focus distance, the nature of the subject, that the AF struggles with shiny plastic stuff or something else? I'm surprised the AF struggled as you don't get any more contrast than black and white

Yeah, thanks. As I mentioned before I'm used to shooting macro with wafer thin DOF (probably more so than this) so used to shooting these type of shots handheld. More test thoughts below

My "more test thoughts". So I've just been around my man cave shooting all sorts of different things at minimum close focus distance and it was fine other than shooting my Darth Vader figure (yes I'm a kid ) Made of similar shiny plastic to my lego man it was very hits and miss, more miss than hit, giving this same ghosting phenomena. My latest findings would suggest it just doesn't like shiny plastic. Focussed fine on different parts of my metal OM1, matt plastic, matt metal, paper, baseball cap etc. The only other thing that it struggled with, although not to the same degree as the Star Wars figures, was my SpyderLensCal, which ironically as I'm sure you all know is specifically to test lens calibration. However, what is this made of? Shiny-ish plastic.

I've just been playing with my T2 & 35 f1.4 shooting an old N Gauge train and I get a similar effect. That said, the light is poor in my lounge, and my hands not the steadiest (tripod is in the car).

I did tell you the 35 was garbage. Had 2, both did the same as yours wide open. Were fine at f2 though.

Bizarre it only happens with shiny plastic though If I was to only use it at f2 I'd sell it and get the f2 version

I'll see how I get on with it over the next few weeks, on the whole it renders really nicely.

Indeed. I bit the bullet and reserved a 10-24mm. At £609 after cash back, it's £40 cheaper than the Calumet open day a few weeks back after which I was kicking myself for missing out on it.

Call me confused, but they're offering double cashback on the high end glass without any other requirements (such as when buying two lenses or camera + lens).

They then link to T&Cs from Fuji that have no mention of double cashback.

If it truly is going to be £250 cashback it's going to take the 16-55 below £600 at a few retailers.

I imagine Jessops site is already displaying the double cash back whereas the Fuji site will only display it once it's actually available (ie from tomorrow).

The max cash back on the 16-55mm would thus be £250 (ie double £125).

EDIT: sorry, I totally misread your post. Are other retailers much cheaper then?

If you've bought one of those from Southsea it doesn't mean that it's on its way to you. They all seem to come from China. I was given a Royal Mail tracking number that RM said didn't exist....until the morning of delivery!
No worries about the quality. More than good enough for your needs.

BTW. @Alan Clogwyn. Do you know anything about Cwmorthin?
I was fancying a trip at the weekend and it's years since I've been in there. Is it safe to park there? Last time I was there the Welsh Nats had a reputation for putting rocks through windows?

Thanks Alan. David has posted a long reply to a thread I started asking for info. I'll read it in more detail tomorrow but he's talking of a TP meet in there in January. That could be fun!
