The Dress that broke the internet is what colour?

Looks black and blue to me. We had this discussion in the office and I got my colori meter out and it suggested it was black and blue. Ok move a millimetre and it thinks the black is brown.

I'm not doubting your explanation however I went to google it to find more information and google doesn't come back with any results :(

Could you give us a bit more detail?

It might be my dyslexic spelling

but basically in the wet print days if you ad two items of clothing in the same photo it was not always possible to get the colour of both items correct in the same photo, one or the other but not both.

It used to play havoc with with wedding photographs when both the mother of the bride and groom were in the same shot and both used to complain that the colour of their dress was wrong but the others was correct.

That was the effect don't know the scientific reason for it though.

As hard as I tried to avoid it, I've seen the blue and black dress on the news. Apparently my eyes aren't deceiving me and it actually IS black and blue!

Maybe its made out of that pearlescent stuff that was all the rage on some cars a few years ago and changes with the light?

There's a FWD BMW that parks in the same car park that Mrs Nod uses that is either turquoise or gold depending on the angle of viewing.

There's a similar one near me too...Also a Beemer.
The difference is that it's either turquoise, or baby-poo brown.
Those are the only options

I see the blueish white & gold/sand colours.
My moneyboss sees blue & black.

the thing that suprised me and nobody picked up on.. the person who first posted the picture says she has seen it in real life and its definitely blue and black and wondered why others saw gold and white..

lets stop and think about that.... keep thinking......... are we sure its blue and black?

Any chance it was taken with some kind of creative settings turned on, like negative settings? Like in the old days when we had colour films, what is white on the prints is black on the negative, what is yellow/gold on the print is blue on the negative, something like that?

For me it is pale blue (tending towards a lavender blue) and a rather pale muddy brown/dirty gold.

It doesn't matter on what device I view the pic, it always comes out as black and blue (or brown and purple-blue). I just can't ever see it as white.

Well on my crappy work laptop it's gold and white . . . unless I tilt the screen at an angle to the window and then it's blue and black.

And now everyone around me probably thinks I've finally lost the plot.
Tilt to the left . . . gold and white
Tilt to the right . . . blue and black
Tilt to the left . . . gold and white
Tilt to the right . . .

OK - I'm having a really stressy day and desperately need some light relief

Don't think the groom, will mind what colour it is, as that's not what he'll be interested in :D

Personally, all I see, is a poorly light and composed image............. have to make it photography related somehow :exit:

Just looked on my phone as well as my monitor is even darker blue on the phone, and not remotely anything like white.

Are you sure its not April 1 and we are winding each other up?

It's the White balance and exposure.

It is at just the tipping point: decrease WB and exposure a bit and you'll get a blue black dress. Increase WB and exposure you will see a gold white dress.

Moral of the story, don't view horrible phone photos and expect it to accurately represent the scene.
But on the same computer screen looking at the same picture I see white and gold, and the good lady see's black and blue. I cant see how white balance would create that illusion.

I always thought me colour blindness was a handicap but I think the folk here who see it as white and gold have a much bigger problem

Enlighten us as to what that might be, perhaps?

All evidence points to the actual real dress being blue & black and the colour difference came to light when the bride and groom both looked at the pic mum had sent and saw it totally differently. I have seen several different explanations as to why people are seeing it differently but with the caveat that actually, no one is quite sure.

I have now seen it on TV looking gold and white-ish [and it is HUGELY different], but as it was just a snippet of news I caught, I am not sure if the news company had done it to show how different it looks to different people, or I really was seeing it looking white/gold

A few people are saying they see white gold until they are told it is black and blue so when they look again, they see black and blue - which could also point to part of the reason being the brains expectations, but that doesn't really explain the initial brain assumption it is two entirely different colours, why is the brain assuming something different in the first place?

What ever colours "you" see, and I don't know how they managed it, but at the end of the day, its been one hell of a publicity stunt!

Maybe this optical phenomenon is what spawned peopleofwalmart I thought. There I was blaming them too for clashing stripes.....

It's official, the actual dress was blue and black, but as it's my universe I refuse to accept the truth  :D

I have no idea, and can't say I care that much

I suspect the vast majority of people don't "care", but despite the t***ter furore, it's made quite an interesting discussion.

My office screen and phone showed very clearly white/gold, my home PC black/blue.
None were calibrated, office and home screens are both Dell ultrasharps.
A colour chemist I work with said blue along with all but one other colleague.

Odd.

This has to be a forum first though - two opposing arguments and everyone is sort of right :D

Wash your mouth out woman.
In fact no....go to your room and think about what you did!

They had an expert on the radio explaining it was due to the way the brain was interpreting it. As we normally see in daylight with blues for the sky or warm colours from the sun, our brains interpret those colours and correct accordingly. Hence the difference depending on which colour you corrected for.
Interestingly, he said that predominately younger people saw white and gold, where nearly all older (over 50 was mentioned) saw black and blue.
