Apparently this story went viral, from a simple phone pic sent of a dress chosen by a MotB to the bride and what the colour actually is. I see blue and black, but apparently not everyone does according to the story, some see it as white and gold. Now whilst the story and links aren't that interesting [who cares what colour a Kardashian sees?] I figured it was worth posting, given we are generally all photographers to some extent or another.

How bizarre! White and gold for me, I just can't see how it would look blue and black, though I just showed it to my daughter and she said blue and brown which is very weird

There must be two different pictures...... I looked at this at home and it was clearly black & blue but at work it's white and gold.

I can't see that monitor settings/calibration could make that much difference

Weird !

I got white and gold - and the gold is a sort of 'dirty , dull gold ' rather than a bright one.

I suspect the dress is possibly made from a type of satin material - shiny so the actual colour really does depend on the light on it .

How do you get black and blue from it ? Most odd

Blue and brown for me.

yeah, the black looks brownish under those lights, but the photographer in me 'accommodates' for indoor lighting and crap phone pics and assumes its black, if that makes sense?

Very curious and the explanation at the end doesn't really explain it.

ETA: Also just moved it from posh Mac screen to crappy old Dell monitor and still looks blue/black

White /Bronze for me. Do you see the White as Blue or the Bronze as Blue ;)

Good point, the main body of the dress is the blue, and the lacy bits running across are black...to those of us that see it as those colours anyway. ;)

Pale blue and brown, though that could be the lighting - white balance - especially if taken with a mobile phone, so perhaps it is really white and gold.
Can't see any black in it. Same on PC and mobile.
P.S. Who is Kardashian? Any relation to the Kardomah tea rooms of my youth?

Ok ,three teachers ,one electrican, four year six pupils ,one member of the office and all see White,Gold (or sandy Brown ) as one put it .

Just asked SWMBO and she saw a purple/lavender and brown dress. Don't ask - I've learned not to!

How odd!
If I look directly at it, it's white and gold, but if I look away (whilst still having it sight, it's black and blue.

This is just the best news I've seen on the internet for ages!

It's official!

I can beat Yv black and blue and millions will still see her as WhiteGold!

Well, you could try.....but I still think she could take ya ;)

White n Gold, then thought it was a wind up after reading the comments, next time its Black n Blue and thats all I can now see lol

Having seen the Kardfatassian name, I refuse to look at the picture!!!

Just a quick comment on Jon's last line though - do you think a certain Miss White would let you get away with that without reducing you to red pulp?! ;) You know she could do it!!!

pale blue and black with poss gold or Bronze inside the black

Green and orange.

Only kidding. Gold and white for me although the white has a slight lavender tint to it.

Lavender blue and brownish black, reading the story to the end that appears to be the right answer as well.

However, Adobe, the colour experts, also wrote on Twitter that, using their software, the dress is in fact black and blue.

It's the White balance and exposure.

It is at just the tipping point: decrease WB and exposure a bit and you'll get a blue black dress. Increase WB and exposure you will see a gold white dress.

Moral of the story, don't view horrible phone photos and expect it to accurately represent the scene.

More important than the colour though, is the fact that the dress is fugly

It started out as white and gold when i first read the article and would of bet my house on it. Then when i saw the picture of the dress on Amazon and scrolled back up sure enough the dress was black and blue. I now can't see it as white and gold!

Whats wrong with you lot?

It is so obviously pink with yellow polka dots

He's probably tried drowning his old age sorrows with some Scotch on his all-bran at breakfast so is seeing colours a bit oddly... ;)

What's this good old reflective anomolance at work again, not seen that since the good old film days
I'm not doubting your explanation however I went to google it to find more information and google doesn't come back with any results :(

Could you give us a bit more detail?
