My mum has not been well for the last couple of days, and today the doctor told her to stay in the house for at least a week. He's not give her any Tamiflu though

So have you had it, or do you know someone who has?

This whole thing worries me because both Chris and I are in the 'at risk' groups. I'm hoping the vaccine arrives soon, as I'm sick of worrying about getting it!

On a lighter note:

Is it true that when you get it, you know for sure because either your tail curls or you start oinking in your sleep?

I wouldn't worry about it, I know quite a few people that have had it and its just a case of spending a week inside. The worst side-effect of it is a week of watching Jeremy Kyle.

My cousin's fiance has it and he just has to stay in the house until it clears.

WARNING …..

If you receive an email from the Department of Health telling you not to eat tinned pork because of swine flu - ignore it.

It's just spam.

:)

I'm in the 'at risk' group as well but still not overly concerned about the whole thing. Surely I can't be the only person who actually wouldn't mind a week in the house?! Would give me time to go through and develop all the photos I've been meaning to do for the last howevermany months...

George.

My mum was diagnosed on thursday with it, although she was already over the worst of it before she rang the doctors, so he just advised rest + fluids.

My son got it friday night, so has spent the weekend in bed. Was given Tamiflu within a few hours of the diagnosis.
I've had a cold for the past few weeks, so quite possibly I've had it (no idea though).

Daughter started coming down with symptoms on saturday night, but by sunday morning, she was OK again.
We're keeping them both in at the moment as a precaution. They can play out tomorrow.

I thought i was coming down with Swine Flu last week, so i rang the Goverment helpline for advice.........All i got was crackling.

Hope your mum gets better soon:thumbs:

Well having just spoke to my mum she says she was told by the Doc that since she has had symptoms for more than a few days the Tamiflu would do little for her. So that's why she didn't get any. I don't think they are testing for it now, unless the patient is very poorly .

Out of curiosity - are people being tested for swine flu or diagnosed via symptoms?

Think it is nearly all just clinical diagnosis and often over the phone.

A friend in the West Midlands son was sent home from school because the nurse said he had SF.
He was absolutely fine the following day.

Stats on incidence of ST will be all to pot now because actual cases are not confirmed.

Doctors are not handing Tamiflu unless it's serious, as they've been told only to give prescribe it once. The vaccine was reported to be ready for circulation next month.

Another forum I am on has a thread on members who have it/ had it... its quite a long thread!

My daughter was off school with it last week (ticked all the right boxes etc) and just home care, kids neurofen/calpol and plenty of fluids. Wife was sent home last Friday from work and has tamiflu due to being at risk. Both cases are pretty much no worse than a bad cold.

Both myself and my wife had a very bad cold which has lasted nearly 3 weeks now it could of been SF but as we are both healthy did not bother about it that much..

Because of the massive outbreak, the government have moved from a 'containment' to 'treatment' phase, so diagnosis is done on symptoms only now. No lab testing required.

TBH If you've had the symptoms for more than 48 hours, the antivirals won't work anyway. From what I read (gotta love the internet :p), they work by inhibiting the proteins required for new virus cells to split away and spread around the body.

So Tamiflu works by stopping it spreading, rather than 'curing' you.
I think theyre only handing it out to those in the at-risk categories (young, sick and elderly etc), and I think even that differs from HA to HA.

Just curious is it a flu you could catch over and over? or once you've had it is that it? your body builds the anti-bodies to prevent it in the future?

James

know a few who've had it and its apparently less aggro than normal flu so set yourself at a little more ease ;)

It's like normal flu, once you've had it once, you won't get it again (In theory)

But all these illnesses mutate slightly every now and then, and sometimes these mutations can mean that you can catch it again.

So if SF doesn't mutate, and you DO get it, that's it.. You'll have a much greater resistance to it in the future.

I was kept of work for 2 weeks by the doctor at the start of the month as I was ill with a normal cold/flu. Due to my partners family being from Birmingham and her mum having got swine flu from the school she teaches at, as well as several of her friends having it who I have been in contact with lately.

I was swabbed but my results came back negative. really annoying the process the Dr took, I was only ill for one week but due to the results not coming back from Birmingham till the end of the second week, he wouldn't change the date on my sick note to allow me to go back to work :( (i only get SSP for being of work as well so next month is going to be hard!)

Just heard on the radio that the goverment are considering leaving all the schools closed until xmas to reduce the spread of swine flu over autumn, that will leave alot of parents in the mire :(

My cousin's had it. Felt very rough for a couple of days followed by three or four days stuck in the house tired and bored. The Doc wouldn't give him any drugs because he was already quite ill when he 'phoned up.

Given the level a situation has to get to (and the fallout, complaints and after effects) before the decision is made to close a school for just a day, I really think this is highly unlikely.
The effect of all those parents having to take time off, at exactly the same time, to look after their kids would hit business much harder than any flu epidemic. The country could almost grind to a halt!

I think I may have had it a few weeks ago but I recovered pretty quickly apart from a dry cough that took a little longer. I had a flu jab back in Feb so didn't expect to get flu/cold like symptoms particularly as my immune system is normally quite good so to be down with flu like symptoms seems like it must have been SF.

The media blows the whole thing out of proportion really. Yes its a new strain and we haven't dealt with it before. But they fail to tell people things like the fact that seasonal flu kills far more people than swine flu each year. Also, most people who have suffered from swine flu have recovered quickly without the need for medicine or any tamiflu/relenza.

Also, if you've had it before it doesn't mean that you won't get it again. It just means that your immune system is familiar with it so knows how to deal with it and so your chances of falling ill from it again is reduced. This is the same for the vaccine.

I find that the best way to recover from flu/cold symptoms is to drink fluid like theres no tomorrow! Its always worked for me, drinking water constantly even if you're not thirsty is the best way to get rid of it - oh and plenty of rest.

And once you've recovered, you need to start boosting your immune system again with plenty of vit c... some people say that Echinacea is really good for that.

I agree, the media has blown it all out of proportion.
It's a flu virus. It's a new strain. We get a new variation of the more well known strain of influenza virus every year.
So the only thing different is that nobody knew how this strain would affect humans.

Is there no vaccine for this? I don't think I could cope with any more than five minutes of this crap.

There is a vaccine, will be available by the autumn apparently, with UK being the first to get it. I'm a little wary about new drugs personally particularly ones that have been hurried out of the labs...

we had our first suspected case at work today , to be honest the idiot that came in with it should be shot for the safety of others , he looked like **** reheated , i really mean it he looked like death warmed up , for the life of me i cannot understand why he came in , stupidity like that is going to make the whole thing far worse , oink oink oink , oh god i have got it now

WE had our firsts confirmed today also, the girl came in with it last thursday looking just the same, pale , shivering etc. However our firm has a funny way with staff sicknesses, so i'm not suprised she came in tbh

scared not to come in in case they think she is pulling a 'sickie' no doubt , stupid really on the companies part :bang:

The media always blow things out of proportion - it's like they enjoy causing panic :bang:

I am in the 'at risk' group and work in a pathology department (in the labs) at a hospital, where there are live swine flu samples and I'm not the slightest bit worried about it.

Immunology are overloaded with swine flu tests at the moment, so yes testing is still being done, although the general idea is if you have flu like symptoms, then stay at home. I assure you, the daytime telly will cause you more grief, never mind tamiflu - tellyflu is what is needed :D

:lol:Overheard in Cork on Monday evening.... "Sure there's a lot of talk about Swine Flu, but the Ovarian flu hasn't gone away you know"

I've been getting odd looks from people pretty much most of the afternoon as I've been sneezing and coughing and got a bunged up nose.

I haven't got any other symptoms though so pretty sure it's just a summer cold. I feel fine albeit a little bunged
