My mate is lending my 1dmk11n as a back up next weekend and yesterday I was given his 24-70L to use through the week.......I have used this before and it is an awesome piece of kit but a little out of my reach so i bought a Sigma 24-70. I wasn't happy with the Sigma so it is away being serviced/callibrated. What would people do :-
1 Use it as much as possible and be depressed that I can't afford one at the moment and realise I will never be happy with the sigma but I will have got some nice shots
2 don't use it so i have nothing to compare the Sigma with when I get it back
3 hope it rains all week so I don't have to pick 1 or 2
(sorry should have turned this into a poll)

Use it as much as possible so you can see what you could achieve. This will help you to focus on your capabilities and ignore your equipment. Then when you return to your own stuff, you will find that your photography has improved.

who is he lending your camera to? , what he is doing is borrowing your camera :)

Use it, enjoy it, give it back. Thats what i would do

According to Photozone the sigma is sharper and has less vignetting and CA. But it dosen't have the red ring does it? ;)

Which version did you buy, HSM or the older one? And why didn't you like it, too soft?

Use enjoy and expect to cry :'(as you hand it back
Bob:thumbs:

Find a good S/H Canon 24-70mm 2.8L only answer. I know what you are going through, thats how I ended up with mine.

I try not to borrow equipemtn I can't afford to buy/replace if the worst were to happen. No matter how careful you are you don't know what's going to happen...

Enjoy it and hope the bug doesn't bite that you really, really want one :D

one day someone will post pictures taken with both lenses then I may be able to tell the difference after both have been suitably processed.

a few questions to answer....My mate is borrowing my 1dmk11 as a spare body as he is doing a wedding at the weekend. As my Sigma was my walkabout lens he loaned me the Canon lens as he is a very nice guy :D. I opted for the Sigma (non hsm) as my walkabout lens because I can't afford the Canon. The Sigma gets mixed results and after borrowing the Canon to shoot a concert in low light then buying the sigma and using it at f2.8 in not so low light I was a bit dissapointed as I thought it would have been sharper at 2.8. I know the price difference was massive but I thought if I send the Sigma to be callibrated I may be happier.....or maybe not lol My biggest problem is that the Sigma should never be compared to the L. May need to start saving

Unfortunately, **** can and does happen. IF you were unlucky enough to damage your mate's lens, how would you replace it? If you're not happy with your Sigma, would he be?

my heart bleeds for you all
the stuff i cant afford isnt good enough for you

spoiled brats...:D

Although I'm insured for my own stuff I am very carefull, even more so with my mates lens. If anything happened that was out of my controll then obviously would I replace it - I can't justify the cost for myself but I would replace my mates if needed.

But the charts don't mention the awful noise it makes when it's hunting, or the amount of hunting compared to the Canon. Knowing that you'll get 'less CA' in challenging lighting is flip all use when you can't lock focus on a subject in the dark and you're dependant on the shot.:'(

* from my experience of the non-HSM lens - on it's way to Sigma since it crapped out on me 2 hrs into a wedding this month.

If I had the money for the Canon I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

You are joking aren't you?

The 24-70 f2.8 is one of Canons best lenses. Every pro tog I've met with a canon has one and swears by them.

i have one, im not a pro by any stretch, I wanted a good solid all rounder and from the reviews that was it, so mr credit card helped me out :D

Explain to your mate that you accidentally dropped it into a very deep lake and offer up your Sigma as penance. I'm sure he'll understand ;) :D

 Had a reply from Sigma - apparently they are having trouble sorting my lens and they are sending it back to japan!! Maybe I should have saved the money buying second hand and put towards an L. At least it should be ok when it returns
