Ok guys.. i popped in to my local Jessops today whilst in town and in a display cabinet they had a sigma 300mm-800mm lens. its quite a beast.

now! i was chatting with my wife last night and we are talking about going to Africa sometime on a Safari holiday. i pre-warned her that i may need to get another lens..

now seeing that 300-800mm got me a little excited but the lens will cost nearly as much as the holiday. so im thinking thats out of the question.

ive had a quick look at sigmas range of 50-500mm and they seem fairly good.

also. would like to know how good the 2x converters are.

is it really capable of taking my 300mm lens and turning it into 600mm without changing quality????

so, i want to start this thread.

heres the question..

Can you please post up what you have.

take a little time out and get your shortest focal length lens. take a photo then take your longest focal length lens and take the same shot as before.

if you do have any extension/converters etc that lengthen the focal lenth can you show me before and afters of them please too.

so come on guys, help me out here ;)

Can't help with ay actual examples cos I'm 110 miles from home.... :(

One thing i will say about ANY t/conv ..... any aberrations you have of any of your lenses will be magnified (made worse) by the factor of your teleconverter.... in other words - you need a damn fine lens to start with and the 70-300mm G series Nikkor [sadly] doesn't fit into that category....
 
you can use the 2x and 1.4x TC's on the 50-500 lens but you loose autofocus, the quality will also suffer quite a bit with the 2x, but aparently loss of quality with the 1.4x is far less. the sigma site also states that when fitted to the 50-500 the zoom range will be limited to between 100-500 so i presume effectively making the lens between 140-700 (1.4x) or 200-1000mm(2x)


depends on what you want from the lens i guess but id have thought for safari wild animal pictures you'd want to retain AF


the WE converter chart also doesnt list your 70-300mm lens on the chart which suggests its not compatable, id presume the rearmost element of the lens would protrude into the TC which is a no no
 
Remember when you are talking about the difference between a 1.6crop (20d) and a 35mm full sensor it's only the field of view that's different. The magnification stays the same, you just get less acreage with the smaller sensor.
 
but without stating that a crop has taken place due to the sensor we'd get vsatly differing results when comparing images taken with full frame, 1.3x 1.6x and 4/3rds cameras
 
Tsk! don't forget 1.5x over on the Darkside! ;)
