anyone watching this? BBC1 at the moment.

initial thoughts are companies employ foreign workers because they are more efficient and they are actually happy to do the work!

its quite interesting, 2 of the english blokes at the spud factory turned up late on the first day, the other texted in at midnight the night before saying he wouldnt be in because hes not feeling well (read as drunk i presume!).

tbh you cant blame the farms for employing people that will work hard and turn up on time

Can only say as I found.

Used to work for a well known Crisp firm.
Was delivering some stuff to a factory in cheadle and asked to be unloaded.

Told to go to the toilet and ask there :suspect:

Got there and the loo was full of coloured people sat on benches and smoking, not a white person in sight as all where working :nono:

Mind you,this was years ago.

No, I didn't watch it, but saw the aftermath on newsnight! and tbh I find these programs to be simple media bull **** Of course the immigrants work hard, that's why they are here.. to earn money and good luck to them! They were paid minimum wage, which goes a lot further back in Poland or wherever?

if those are your thoughts after watching it then all I would say is that my feelings have been proven correct! had it been the other way around then it (the program) would have been deemed racist?

BTW to harvest 35kg of Asparagus for £20 (ish) labour how much do the supermarkets charge for 35kg of asparagus ££££,££ :| Certainly shows the mark up

No offence to the OP and thanks for the discussion point

I thought it was typical BBC lefty propaganda .... it justified the immigrants taking our jobs in order to pacify those of us who instinctively know the difference between fair and unfair. It did nothing to resolve the issue.

This Gov't is so short sighted, but that should come as no surprise as the Leader is blind in one eye and going blind in the other. The only three countries in the E.U. that opened the doors to immigrant labour were Sweden, the U.K. and Ireland. Sweden has huge race relation troubles, I know nothing of whats happening in Ireland and the U.K. is starting to get fed up with it all.

All the Gov't could see was more people coming to work here and paying tax into their collapsing system. They didn't take into account the effect it would have on the social systems - schools, healthcare, housing etc. They further didn't consider that the cheaper labour would push nationals out of jobs, creating a further burden on the benefit system.

Th immigrants come over her in order to better their lives, there's nothig wrong with that. If uyou were living in a country with low wages and a low standard of living then you, if presented with the same opportunity, would likely do the same thing.

Successive gov'ts have let this country down, there has been too much focus on higher education, trading meaningless bits of paper and creating the service industries that produce nothing yet are ever increasing. Who have we left to do the real work? Why would they want to?

The t.v. doesn't show people grafting in factories any more, they show people in nice cars wearing nice clothes doing nice jobs. Thats what people are shown so that is what they aspire to, not working 8 hours in a factory sorting spuds.

That's why my lad left here for the states, he is now a self made millionaire and did not sponge off the USA tax payer :)

 Excellent post which hits the nail on the head, just to add immigration has only ever been good for business,s big or small, gets them cheap labour, so they don't have to pay what they really should for what the job's worth, it really p!$$e$ me off when you here people say, "but if we never had immigration who would serve you in restaurants or in pub's etc etc" well the answer is simple ENGLISH people paid a proper and decent wage, cheap labour equals more profits for the greedy.

And just to add, the strain immigration is putting on this country for social housing, NHS treatment, and the welfare system is tremendous, and anyone who tells you any different has got there head up there ar$e,rant over and call me racist if you want, but facts are facts.

BBC is little more than a propaganda machine for the gov.

I don't think it's quite as simple as that. You're right that if nobody was going to do the job cheaply then they would have to up the wages and that might entice some english people into the jobs (although I suspect many would think such jobs were below them and they were better off sponging off the state).

The problem as I see it is that to pay those higher wages prices have to go up to cover the costs and british people don't want more expensive goods and services they want cheaper goods and services. If going out for a meal or buying certain foods at a supermarket become more expensive then people will choose to not go out for a meal or to buy alternative (cheaper) products.

If customers are then staying away or buying elsewhere then that doesn't help the business employing the expensive labour does it? The business downscales or closes and the employees are back on the dole. It's not as B&W as many people make out and to adress the problem would require a massive shift in attitude from customers IMO.

I work in a factory and see a fair share of labour come and go as work increases/decreases. The agency we use at the minute tends to send mainly Polish migrant workers, I've always found them hard working and friendly. IMO they are needed as they tend to move around the county where ever the work is and adapt very quickly. The few new starters that are local are of a mixed bunch to put it mildly, most seem to walk straight out when they go to the surgery and are asked for a sample for a drugs test :suspect:.

I didn't see the program but read about it in the papers.

:

No unfortunately not anymore, :) get your minimum wage money go to any bigger city in Poland and sea on your own how long will it last. Lots of products are cheaper in England some have the same price,... shocked, well iam when at home.(Krakow)

Most of you dont realize that in some aspects old Eu countries are partly to be blamed for this massive immigration, during privatisation period lots of factories that were bought by western investors were kept shut for long time or workin staff were hugely reduced, when you guys (EU) were enjoying big rise in production on our expens, central europe was being flooded with EU products, (now it happens with ukraine nad eastern countries)
Also property prices that rocketed mostly in last decade, because big investement companies were making money. In my city, from 10 new flats in my building, 5 were empty ( owned by western investors, i had 3 english neighbours))
There was time that almost nobody with Polish wages could afford to buy a house (rise up to 40% a year). It happend also in Spain and France :)
Also to develop a country in a place called Europe with all its restricting policies isnt easy and takes some time.:shake:

One more thing, once i had this situation, i was cursed by some English, named as a cheap f...ing eastern european but in reality these guys were making half of what i was getting :) Sometimes its good to think twice and not to use stereotypes created by THE SUN OR DAILY MAIL.. IMO.
If not, often you can make an ignorant fools of yourselfs.

Btw there is more English migrants worldwide than for example Poles in Uk:):naughty:

Immigration is just the hot topic right now and I dont think i can have another debate on it. The elections are making it ten times worse with tories emphasizing it win voters and the tabloids sensationalizing everything. Once the election is over it will perhaps turn to the £20 billion a year that binge drinking is costing to the NHS :| I have a lot of friends who have emigrated and I believe that they add to the economy unlike the two times that amount of people I know needlessly on the dole. In ten years time I predict this country to be a more cultural and perhaps more tolerant country.......hopefully.

As Wisbech is my nearest town, I watched this program with interest.

One of the things I found amazing was the 'workers' who didn't turn up as promised.

Having obviously agreed to do the program I feel that they let themselves down very badly.

They surely must have known what they were in for? Perhaps they didn't want to make themselves fools in front of the cameras.

It did seem to me though, that the program makers went out of their way to pick people who were more or less doomed to fail before they even started.

:thankyou: for a great post! :agree:

I don't speak much latin either

And i'm sure the immigrant workers have all been through the stringent
health and safety training that we all have to. By that i dont mean just
signing the paperwork..

.

I worked in a steel mill for a while.

The H&S talk was, "Right lads, wear gloves and don't be a dick. Sign this."

Or the alternative is for the greedy companies to lower there profit margin pay a decent wage, and keep the prices low ;)

Only if they actually bother to turn up though, eh?

It amazes me how British people tar other British/English people with the same brush, of course there are people who won't turn up, as their probably would be in Poland had the program been made there, or anywhere else for that matter, my point is there are lazy bar stewards in all nationalities, but why do the Brits always have to fall for this old and now worn excuse, because of this government and previous one's balls up's regarding immigration :(

:lol::lol:You must be confusing businesses with charities! Businesses only care about the shareholders.

Tolerance these days means bowing down to the diktats of his corrupted government and keeping our mouths shut.

You must be uncoloured? Seriously, coloured? What is this the 1960's?

It's a polite way of saying African / Asian .... .... :suspect: or perhaps someone with a nice sun tan :D

Your definition obviously. My point was more a cultural tolerance.

Amen.

It's almost getting to a point where it's racist to simply BE british. Our own country is becoming less and less British every day. Political Correctness has gotten way out of hand!

This isnt meant as a dig but an honest question, how is the above statement true? This could be of where I live but I dont see it getting less and less british unless I am missing something

One example i can think of is the burgeoning number of former pubs now reopening as a foreign food restaurant, typically Indian but not confined to that. This hasn't been helped by the smoking ban of course... But a very British instution is going by the wayside :(

Apparently more people here favour Chicken Tikka Masala over a traditional English roast dinner, which is no longer the number one meal.

That's two examples of getting less and less British to start with. I dare say more will come up...

But what is British. We have a culture and heritage that has adopted from other lands for the last 2000 years. Who are the British? The Celts? The Romans? The Saxons? The Normans? I am proud to be British and to embrace the multi-cultural heritage and future that we have.

But surely that is because that is what people are willing to pay for? Both indiginous and immigrant? I went out for a pub lunch today (something I don't do as much as I'd like) and the pub only had 6 people in it. No wonder pubs are closing all over Britain. You can't blame people opening restaurants when the pubs are all closing due to lack of business. It's just an evolution of the society we live in.

So... does anyone ever watch Crime Watch ...;)

My point was to answer the post about how britain was becoming less british. I think when so many "british" pubs are reopening as "ethnic" and changing the look, feel, and smell of the high street that's a fair example to reply with.

It's also not new. We had something similar happen with the rapid influx and opening of fast food establishments, ala American style. The difference is they are not reopening pubs as restaurants whilst still looking like a pub, at least not for the most part (There is a MacDonald's on the A13 that was a pub that springs to mind).
