WRONG AGAIN

i process every photo individualy

i have set my JPEG settings with everything of or to the lowest settings i can.

i adjust the contrast, highlights, darkness, sharpening etc. myself and i never batch

What do you mean "again"? I'm never wrong :D

So you shoot Jpeg, then process on the pc anyway? what a waste. Just get a compact.

Im not saying jpegs aint no good i use them alot, but for important stuff i use raw and thats the way it will always be for me.

Oh and that eagle looks soft.

Well i have to say if that is "soft" then i aint ever putting any of my images up for C&C as i'll get laughed off the forum...

The flying one is indeed a red kite. Captured one last year flying over Abingdon, Oxford, while I was there. It's not as impressive as the one posted earlier though

I love my D700! I wondered why Nikon had stopped making/selling it when the the D800 came out (after all you can still get a D90 several years after D7000 has come out) - but I suppose it was because it would be in the same price bracket as the D600?

The way i see it, many may disagree ... but the D600 replaces the D700, the D800 replaces the D3x. It's a more studio orientated camera. Many don't get this, they moan about fps and too many MP ... it's meant to rival medium format for studio work. BUT, it's still well capable of shooting in low light, at high ISO. Unlike the D3x. I think that is basically redundant now.

i struggled at Ackers concert to night i didnt know what to do.

what with using a old obsolete D3s

shooting in jpeg with auto white balance

then as usual i was in aperature priority and using A/F.

then i had to use photoshop as what came out the camera in jpeg was unusable, how i wished i had shot in raw...;)

i managed to retrieve the useless jpeg to a degree i spent ages on it it the kettle had nearly boiled by the time i had edited it,just to slow.

you know i think i forgot to sharpen this one as well,ah never mind.

because you was using the wrong camera and shooting in raw...maybe?:)

Eh, no I was just way too far from the bird. That's a mighty heavy crop, taken with a D90 and sigma 70-200. Check stuff before trying to be clever eh? good lad. As for your above shot, I wish you did too. You could have brought it out of under exposure much better. Did you think it was a wonderful shot or something? 3 posts in a row on it?? looks a standard bar shot to me.

I couldnt do it, but then again i'd have got it right to start with and not underexposed it to start with.

Just because you're bringing back shadow detail, doesn't mean you accidentally underexposed. And just because you post process, it doesn't mean you aren't a good photographer. Some of my favourite photographers use heavy post processing.

You obviously missed the big yellow ball shaped head at the end so here it is again

I had a quick look there at some of the images on your facebook page and on your website, I have to say I really don't understand people like you.

I don't think it's very fair for you to critiscise other people's work when the images you have taken yourself are far and away from there level. Perhaps your time would be better spend learning the fundamentals of photography. I find it incredible that you are offering professional services to be honest when your work is clearly not at a level were this should be the case. I guess this is the world we live in now were anyone with an SLR thinks they are a photographer. This is obviously just my opinion. I would never dream of slaughtering someone else's work, if I was not able to do better myself.

As per normal this has turned into a c*ck wagging contest with photographers and there massive egos.
There are plenty of photographers that charge and produce what I would call sub par work, including may on this forum. But there are plenty that can,the biggest problem I see is that most have this huge ego, when really there photos are nothing special, and there are a lot more talented amateur photographers that don't charge compared to those that do.

At the end of the day if people buy your stuff then thats good for you,but don't get a big ego over it.Its the same with kit, I have top of the line kit as I'm lucky enough to be able to afford it as a hobby, but i don't go around belittling people with cheaper kit.
I would like to do this as a job at some point but I feel/know my work isn't up to a standard I would be happy to charge for, even if others at the same level or lower do.

The d700 is a great camera that will continue to produce great picture, as is the d800. If you don't like what one camera does don't buy it,but i don't think there is a need either to start slagging it,especially if you have never used one.
.
The same should go with others work, if they ask for critique then give it, if they don't and you think there work is sub par no need to belittle them, because you think your so much better, when really you may not be.

leave you lot alone for a while and it turns into a bitchfest . . . :bat:

pmac - I think I said what you said a page or two ago [albeit in far fewer words] and that got me a marriage proposal, so be careful, talking sense can cause all manner of gains  :naughty:

Already PM'd him a proposal but he wants 2 coffes and biscuits, some folk just price themselves out of contention.

I agree pmac but I have experience with both and thought that was good to share. I think the d800 is a really good camera but I also think it could've been much better with just one change. I know a lot of people considering replacing their d700 so the thread is relevant - if the posturing is toned down that is.

Ah! Mr Bilk... I'm told I peed all over his lap when I was but a bairn - my parents were quite heavily involved in a proper nightclub back in the early '60s and he used to dandle me on his knee when he visited the Quay in Exeter (now a rather rowdy discotheque rather than a proper nightclub, I understand!)

I'll admit it. I sold my D700 after buying a D600 recently. But it was, and will remain, an absolute classic. It does everything well. Period.

As far as I'm aware, Nikon still claim the D7000 is not a replacement for the D90 hence the two models being sold alongside each other.

I wonder how economical the D700 is for Nikon, it's potentially taking sales from the newer models and it appears in contrast to the previous generation where the D3X was the most expensive due to the Sony sensor that this time the Sony sensor models are cheaper as it's the D4 that's comparatively more expensive.

After spending a while working through shots with the D700, I'm wavering again on the D800. It's annoying there's no hire places up here as being able to shoot with it for the day would probably give a good idea whether it's worth the upgrade for me because as this thread aptly demonstrates, opinions vary considerably on the D800.

Feel free to point out the pictures you feel are below your level, I am really interested. Seriously. I've been shooting for about 20 years, I don't have to big myself up. I am not one of the guys who just picked up a dslr. I have a feeling you might be though. You bought a dslr a few years back and now you think anyone with a voice is a n00b or something? weird. Would you like a shoot out or something lame like that? I call out one obnoxious poster and get hit with another backing them up. I say bring it.

What you're bitching about: The guy made 3 posts in a row, unnecessarily,as if these pics were amazing. Talk about self praise! I posted to say it was merely a snap shot, a decent one at that, but not worthy of all the self praise he was giving himself. Is that the kind of shooter you prefer? Take a look back.

I'm not even going to stoop to your level anymore [unless you really fancy that shoot out, seriously, give me a subject besides boring sports] . I made one comment on ONE image somebody felt the need to make 3 consecutive posts on ... I'm honest, you're just being confrontational for NO reason. You live with it ...

Only one troll here me thinks ^^^

I'll take the out right win though, thanks. Just knowing that will annoy you is enough. The suggestion was to see if you'd take the bait, you seem gullible enough.

I'd love to see your work though, as you're all mouth but not seen anything you've shot. You're on here all the time mouthing and trolling, do you even get out and shoot? trying to be funny and pull back from your original ignorance with lame jesting doesn't cut it here. I really do now think you're one of those who bought their first dslr last year, watched 3 tutorials and now you're an expert.

"When there is doubt, there is no doubt" might apply here. If you're happy with the D700, why spend a couple of grand on a camera that you'll do the same work with you would do anyway? The D800's advantages over a D700 are pretty well documented at this point. If they leave you cold, there are many better things 2 grand could do.

Borderline fist fights in this thread! People... they're just cameras... calm down!

Ok.. I've owned or used probably ever Nikon since the F2, and they all have strengths and weaknesses. There is no one camera that is clearly definable as better than another. This is a fact, even if you say which is better between a D3x and a D70, as the D70 is better if you have only a couple of hundred quid to your name. Get it?

What's going on in this thread is people justifying their purchases for one reason or another.

Sticking to the facts, the D700 is getting on for 5 years old, so yes, its price has dropped dramatically. Why is that surprising? Do you want used prices to remain the same? We all wish that, but in the face of competition from newer models, why should you expect them to? Things get older... they get cheaper as they become discontinued.

12mp is looking rather paltry these days. While there may be many arguments for and against the D800's 36mp, one thing is certain, 12mp can be very limiting for some that need to print big. However, I really fail to see the "It has too much resolution" argument at all. Yes, it shows up many lens flaws in cheaper lenses, but I'd rather see that than aliasing and jaggy pixels if I need to print at 30" or more... but that's just me.. I like high resolution images.. I still use 5x4! :) With the exception of file sizes, I fail to see how you can have too much resolution.

The D700 is a great camera, and if you own one, and love using it, then fine. How others regard it shouldn't really be an issue for you should it? Does it matter? What's the problem.. are you worried about being seen using a camera that's deemed to be old, or past it? Worried that makes you less of a photographer in others' eyes? If not.. then just enjoy using it.. who cares what others think? However, you can not object to the fact that a 5 year old camera, no matter how good, is probably heading into the twilight of it's years as a viable professional camera for most people these days.

This is nothing new really is it? In the film days, Nikon used to release a new "F" camera around once every 9 to 10 years. In between those dates, a slew of pro-sumer and amateur cameras would be released around them. The same happens now, but because of the increased pace of technology in digital cameras, this appears to be more a 5 year cycle. By the time 5 years rolls around, most cameras are looking a little tired in many respects even if they are still perfectly usable for some people.

Merely progress doing what it does I'm afraid.
