Yes
i cant believe how many people have written this camera of,nor the amount of people selling at a ridiculous low price.

everyone ive met with a D800 regrets it,with its focus issues etc. slow and to much resolution.
like the [pro] shooting motor racing with one,you could see how much she regreted her choice.
the D600 is not a replacement either.

most pros are not so quick to abandon what works just for the sake of having the latest gear.

just saying...

i wont be selling mine, even thought of buying a new one and keeping it as a long term spare. :)

I bought one in April as an upgrade from my D5000 and I love it!

If they're going cheap, it might be worth looking at getting another one as a backup like you said :)

Its still a superb camera which we will probably never see a like for like replacement of.

It was luck really as its the ******* child of the D3 and D300.

I would never sell mine.

I don't. And I've had 0 issues either.

Then, I never did own a D700.

Why are so many D700 owners dismissing the D800? When they don't own one? Or is that why?

 One has just popped into the price check section (brand new by the looks of it) :naughty:

Thats said tongue in cheek and no way intended for you to say how much its worth in order to buy it :exit:

I debated about buying a D800 for a time until I got the chance to use one. Even Calumet advised me to not get one and to hold on to the D700.

I bought my D700 brand new in April and love it.

I'm happy to keep it as there's nothing else current in Nikons FX range that interests me - unless 2nd hand D3x's (unlikely) start selling ultra cheap in the near future:thumbs:

The D800 is demanding on the glass, but I can't see where the D700 holds an advantage over the D800? Technology moves on.

I have 2 D700's and for me it is about the D800 offering nothing I want of a camera. I have a weddings worth of D800 raw files on my machine from my 2nd [all shot with nikon pro glass the same as my own] and to be honest, apart from the size, can see no difference in IQ at any setting. I don't want video, or massive files, so see no point in updating at this time, the D700 does exactly what I need it to do.

Much as I love my D700, I'm finding this thread a little embarrassing! There is already an owner's thread running. This seems like some sort of slightly paranoid self assurance exercise.

For what it's worth, I really, really want a D800e right now but I'm already stretching the processor on my imac with my current files. Actually, on that note, does anyone know anywhere I could download a D800 raw file so I could see how my computer deals with it? If it grounds to a halt, the deal is off for now.

Its funny how everyone talks about the file sizes. I think the files are considerably better then those from a d700. Which isn't to say the camera isn't without drawbacks and certainly not for everyone, but the clarity, dynamic range, skin tones and detail on the files is noticeably better then the d700. At anything up to iso 3200 I'd say it beats the d3s as well. I like I can push the files harder in processing as well.

graham, ask someone who already owns one if they can send you one, perhaps Cagey above who has one. My imac coped with them well enough, buts its brand new, latest gen processor and 12gb's of ram, but there was still a noticable speed difference between them and the D700 files - not 'slow', but visibly slowER

Would I be correct saying you should all upgrade to 5D3

err no.......

if you PM your email address I'll drop box a couple to you. Wiith processing power you tend to need lots of RAM for CS5 so it doesn't hit the scratch disk and slow right down, and gc grunt for LR

Hmmm, maybe I'll be okay. Mine is 18 months old but I did up it to 12gb. Just seems to chug occasionally particularly when I've stitched a panorama.

Cheers Hugh. PM heading your way.

Why deci??

In short, too many mp. But other issues too. No low light improvement to speak of. Green colour cast on images.

Its a capable camera, just not for me. A 16mp version of that body, even at the same price, and i'd have bought two!

Surprised no one has mentioned the fact that the grip on the D800 is pretty awful compared to the D700. There's no where to rest your thumb on the back, and the grip is too contoured to be comfortable for long periods of time or with heavy lenses. (I used one for several hours)

I can deal with large file sizes or a poor LCD, but the real killer was that it felt plain awful to hold.

I will always miss the D700, it was my very first SLR. And I think it will go down as a classic, a one of a kind camera that defines other cameras of its time, a bit like the Nikon FE etc.

But I don't regret the move to Canon, the 5D MKIII does everything I wanted from a successor to the D700, so it was time to switch.

not at all i have a D3s as well and quite often prefer my D700.
if i wanted a D800 or D600 then i would get one,somehow.
i know what works for me i dont need any reassurances.

it was more about people allways chasing the latest gadget even if it wasnt what they realy need.

Guilty as charged your honour.

I got a 5D MK III recently, so I have that and the D800 and I still liked the D800 files better using similar glass. I'm going to stick some Leica R glass on the D800 and see how I like it. If I needed a fast camera I'd get a D3S or even a D3, but the D800 chugs along nicely for me and the torture the files can take means I'd never go back to a D700.

i know some one crying trying to focus a D800 at a big well lit gig in London and the files in JPEG even loading so slow.

being a gentleman i decided not to comment about choosing the right tool for the job. :)

It's certainly food for thought from someone who has owned both, i'm surprised the D800 has no better low-light capabilities, having said that the D700 is excellent in this aspect, i would love to see it upgraded with 16mp/18mp and maybe 100% viewfinder. I would love another D700, if i had the dosh, i would buy another one tomorrow, it will certainly go down as one of Nikon's finest.

I think it's great to see people still loving the D700. I said it before, i'd have bought one in a heartbeat up until now, if I had the money. When I had the opportunity/money, I opted for the 800, I seen it as an improved D700 really. I don't need fast fps. I never spray and pray, and don't shoot sports. The fastest things I shoot are hyper kids, and I have no problem keeping up in single shot mode ;)

The focus is lightening quick. The detail is incredible on full res files. I really doubt the D700 can match the quality, with good lighting, properly exposed etc ... the D700 images will look fantastic, but the 800 are going to look that bit extra sharp and detailed. No matter what people tell you.

I got the E for that wee bit extra sharpness too - and no, I've not had any moiré issues. Yet. In fact, I would say my D90 was worse for that.

Pair the D800 with some off cam flash and you're approaching MF details , clarity, sharpness.

And I've shot at ISO 10k at a gig and got very usable results. I posted samples somewhere on here.

If you want faster, tougher, better in low light ... well, you want a D4.

The D800 looks an excellent camera, but I can't really see how an upgrade from my D700 would benefit me. I've had it since January 2009, and am still delighted by it, so I think I'll hang onto it until something else comes along that represents a step change in some element of performance that I didn't realise needed improving.

Unless you print very large [which I do plan to],like to shoot video, have a very fast pc/laptop: there is no point.

I use an i7 powered laptop with 1TB HDD that has 8GB DDR3 RAM [will be upping that to 16 soon] - and the files just fly. LR4 & Cs6 open together, working away, very little slowdown. It has an Nvidia graphic chip which kicks in when these programs open. Smooth as.

I tried my old i3 lappy with some D800 files and it almost choked.

Heh.

The difference not being big enough to be useful to you or being in a range you don't use anyway, I have no problem with.

But you have to be blind to say the D700 has the same IQ as the D800, especially in low light or high DR scenes. It's almost the same gap as between the D700 and D3s in low light.

Also usefull if you have to crop images and want to keep a usefull amount of detail.

Just for info in ref to what Cagey said about moire - the files I have DO show significant moire, though bear in mind it is on mens suits, a highly likely area for such problems on any camera. Having said that, the moire brush in LR4 cleaned them up a treat and that on its own would not stop me buying a D800e if it was the camera for me. ;)

Well i want a D800 purely for the extra MP, i didnt want one a while ago as i was happy with my D3S and D700 but i bought a second D3S for the sport which kinda makes the D700 redundant now and a few recent requests from editors for high res files of some photos makes me seriously need to upgrade to the 36mp as im missing out on some earnings simply because the D700 or D3S cant produce big enough resolution files

Not used a D800 - and, since I don't need any of its specced advantages over my D700, I see no point in doing so!

As for daguirdas's suggetion, WHY? I have a large selection of Nikon fit lenses, speedlight etc and like the fact that I can print A3+ straight OOC, with no time spent in PP. Have you ever used a D700? Maybe it's YOU who needs to change systems!!!:p

heres a crop from both cameras 3x the res.

mmmmm.........so different crops (1 may be 100% but both aren't),reduced to web resolution, processed differently photos for both cameras isn't really a great way of seeing anything.
