What car were you getting 600-700 miles to a tank out of interest? The tdci you mention previously?

No. same era but mine was my Dad's old Capri Laser, it only had 15k miles on the clock at 6yrs old when I bought it off him, and 51k miles 4yrs later when I sold it. I saw that Capri article the other day, surprisingly good condition, if it's been under water for as long as they suspect.

Yes that's the one, I was getting 700 miles to a tank with a gallon left during the warm and hot weather, but would fall to nearer 600 miles during the winter. Mixture of motorway, dual carriageways and urban driving.

One of the cars I really wish I kept, it was spotless, no rust, my Dad always paid to have his cars Ziebart rust treated and would be worth something today. :(

That MPG is more like 53 summer, 45 winter. Thats surprisingly good as I know someone else with the same car that averages 40MPG best case year round.

I have the newer 2.0 TDCi Ti X and that does about 48 average but I do 70% town, 30% motorway with stops in between. I messed up on my tank result a few posts back as I usually refill at 550 and still have about 1/4+ tank.

12.5 gallon tank, I was only using around 11.5 gallons which does equate to around 60mpg over 700 miles. My record was 728 miles from 11.5 gallons, but that was 90% cruising at 60-70mph.

Thats very good. Mustve been a 'good' engine. Id like to think Id get a fair bit more avoiding town and stops but no choice there unfortunately.

It was only around 70bhp, to get much speed out of it, I had to give it a lot of welly. The old VV carburettor probably didn't help much. I was still able to get the back end to step out though. One time, turning right on a slightly damp road I got it to spin 180degs to face the next car behind me also waiting to turn right, look on the blokes face was priceless. Dropped the clutch it snapped back 90degs and I carried on up the road as if nothing happened. ;)

Thats good imo, slightly more than mine, I do mostly town driving. But I have the Mk4 2.0 140. My E60 525d used to drink fuel. :beer:

Right I like the way this is going. The budget, important as it is, is rather boring. I much prefer to talk cars and drink a cold beer :)

I must say, it isn't bad at all! And I have a pretty heavy right foot so I could probably eek a little more out of the tank. Just did a 225 mile motorway journey at 75mph and got 65mpg. (Take a few miles off for the overly optimistic computer).

I've had a few in my time
MkII 3.0 Auto ( blindingly fun in the wet)
MkIII 3.0 Manual I lowered that one( still fun in the wet though)
2.8i still fun in the wet and quick too
2.8is the wider tyres LSD lowered suspension (et al) Stupidly fast for the day, both in a straight line and "cross country" ;)
more difficult to make it flip its tail, but still possible :D
 
For me it was a toss up between the Monza and the Capri. Sadly I've never owned either, and reminiscing aside I would want any of them these days. Fun in the days but let's face it compared to curren day standards they were s***.

I was obsessed with them as a kid, I'd still have one now though I don't think I could afford to run one!

They were advertised as the family man's sports car :D I never really fancied the Monza but I did have an Opal Manta GTE for awhile, that wasn't bad either.

These days I'm far more sensible with my choice of toys,
Hyundai Gen 3.5 V6 coupe, I think thats what the Capri should have evolved into not that Probe thing.
It does actually handle more like a RWD than a FWD TBH.

I only had the one, which was my Dad's 3rd. He always went for the lower powered ones though I'm afraid.
1st was a base model Mk2 1.3
2nd a Mk3 1.6 LS
Then the 1.6 Laser I had off him
I'd love a Mk3 3.0S ib black with full Series X options including the triple Webbers.

When I was an apprentice my mate had a Manta for several years, he'd never driven a car with power steering and was asked to go to another part of the plant to get the toolroom managers car and bring it round for him. It was a brand spanking new fully loaded Mk2 Granada Ghia. As he reversed out of the small parking area, he pulled hard on the wheel to turn it expecting non assisted steering, car turned quicker and easier than expected and stoved the front wing in on a gate. He was propper bricking it when he got back, rest of the managers found it funny but did tell him they wouldn't be asking him to go and pick up his cars, :)

Never really thought much of the Monza, looked to big and bulky, that was more akin to the old mk1 Granada Coupe

@Cobra @nilagin you are both absolutely right, I did mean the Manta not the Monza...The Monza was based on a rubbish family saloon, current day that would be the Insignia Coupe :puke:

I don't mind the Hyundai V6 Coupe either, they've done that one ok and I think was generally underrated for what it is. Which is great when you don't buy one new :)
 
friend used to have a 3.0l capri with a huge body kit, big bonnet bulge with dials in it and a firebird painted on it. tiny front tyres and really wide rears made ofr fun in the wet. he went most places sideways.
