I am sat in my office over looking Ipswich Marina and I have a beautiful view of a mother swan and her goslings in a nest, its just a shame my camera is back at home.

Whats the best shot you never got?

About 10 crows attacking a heron mid flight about 20ft above me. *sigh*

But then the missus shouted "leave him alone you nasty crows!"

A picture of yourself gazing out the window when you should be working :D ;)

An extreme sunset with amazing colours here in Clifton

A stunning rainbow over Bristol at sunset - pain to watch with gear left at home.

torch relay over Clifton bridge - thanks to very poor schedules published online

Day out at Welney Washes WWT and using a 400mm prime lens, water vole popped out of the fen bank right opposite me and I'm too close

By the time I got to a suitable distance only managed a shot of the splash as it went under the surface

Driving over the top of the A27, glance left to see the kestrel hovering level with my passenger window beautifully lit. B****r!

....and I had all the gear in the car too.

Egret on a power line yesterday morning - never seen them perching on one of those before

An amazing sunset as I was driving up the easy lancs towards Warrington, the sky was clear except for a small bunch of cloud with great definition, the sun was half in and half out of the formation , it looked amazing.

I was out the other day with my macro lens on when a completely unknown insect landed on my shoulder. Try as I might I couldn't get a decent shot of it in focus, got a good one of my jacket though, and I've looked all over the web since to find it but can't.

A cloud inversion on the North Yorkshire Moors, I was up above the cloud, beautiful light, looking down on this blanket of cloud.

I normally have a camera with me everyday, this day I was changing cars a lot so hadn't bothered bringing it with me.

I've not failed to bring a camera with me since.

Similar for me, I was up above Langdale in the Lake District when the clouds just drop below me and all that was visible was the mountain tops. Had camera with me but the batteries had pack up due to the low temperature it was Mid February and there was lots of snow about as well.

Being new to having a film SLR i hadn't kept it in my jacket or the batteries.

One glorious summer morning a few years ago I opened the curtains and there was a blackbird on the lawn, seconds later he was an ex blackbird as a Sparrow hawk took him out,the Sparrowhawk then calmly sat there having a nibble of his breakfast whilst giving me the "Your camera's upstairs isn't it " look

Mountain climbing two RAF jets buzzed over my head on a low fly by, i had just gon from the top of the hill down a few steps so i couldn't hear them approaching. I got shots of them in the distance but it was too late by then.

Im not overly worried there will always be another chance.

A chef smashing a picture off the wall of the restaurant over a waiter's head which happened last night when we were out with friends.
Massive row between 2 staff in the Turkish restaurant over tips i think, then the chef grabs the picture off the wall and smashes it straight over the waiters head. Cut to ribbons he was... not nice to see, but would have made a great shot

About ten years back I remember stopping at a T junction on a country road, looked to my right and through the old gate there was a field with morning mist hovering at about a foot high and two beautiful thoroughbred horses standing there backlit by the low sun. I was awestruck and just knew that I could never get to a camera and back before either the mists or the horses were away.. gutting!

A few years ago, I was with my youngest son, then aged about 2, on Blackpool beach with the tide nearly in.

Someone was a couple of hundred yards from shore and clearly in trouble. Someone had called the coastguard.

Then the first rescuer turned up, a young woman. The rest of her team were in their Landy, driving down to the beach. She spoke into her radio "Going in, need assistance", stripped off and was gone, she was an incredibly powerful swimmer and reached him very quickly. 2 of her mates went in, wearing lifelines, and between them they got they guy back.

There were two excellent shots there, the rescue itself and the look on her face when she got back to me (I was looking after her clothes and radio), which was just like the look on a woman's face just after she has given birth - it was wonderful.

But I couldn't take a single shot because by now the tide was almost in and it had become dangerous, and I couldn't take my eyes off my son for a moment.

I was in Edinburgh last year at the festival. It started raining and I was sheltering in a close with another photographer. As we chatted a performer dressed as Charlie Chaplin walked past and out the other end of the close - there he was, in full tramp outfit holding up his brolley in the backlit rain, framed by the close. We both raised our cameras and... two blokes came out of a side entrance carrying a large panel about 6ft by 8ft right between us and Charlie!

Last year I covered a football awards ceremony and saved a seat for myself at the end of a row populated by a team of 7 year old players.

"Hello Mister, are you a Paparazzi ?"

"No but I am the official photographer"

"Have you photographed any celebrities ?"

"Yes, quite a few"

"Have you ever photographed Cheryl Cole... in the bath ?"

That's the one that I missed...

The transit of venus last week. I was up at stupid oclock to drive to somewhere where the sunrise would be good, climbed up the hill/mountian almost dying in the process (I'm not the fittest of people) and the fog/cloud rolled in and I could see b****r all.

Does it count if you had the shot and lost it? My best ever shot was of 3 hammerheads up close when we were diving in The Maldives. They'd come up behind us and swam alongside for a few minutes. It was a great shot but then someone nicked my bag with my memory cards at Glasgow airport. I learned my lesson though, now I take my laptop and make several copies of holiday photos.
