The best camera for a newbie

To cut the carp that has now taken over the thread - YES a Pentax K2000 would be a good beginner's DSLR.

Whatever you get as a first DSLR will get sold again as you decide what you want to do with photography and what features you'll ultimately want in a camera system so it matters not what you buy as long as it teaches you what you want to know. (And is also a good reason to buy older s/h gear rather than a brand new budget model)

^^ Good idea, but I feel like I must put my two cents worth in :D

I'm not making sound myself that way, sorry. I mean exactly what I say - sony and pentax are very capable systems, BUT not for newbies.

Why aren't they good for newbies? I'm a newbie and got a Sony a330 a year ago. I bought it because it was fairly cheap compared to Canon and Nikon. I found that Sony offered just about the same amount of options, etc compared to C and N, but for a lower price.
There, I'm done. May this thread have a happy ending!

Well I've just bought a Nikon D3100
Woohoo ;-)

Just charging the battery as I type.
