I thought this would be an interesting thread...

What's the bit you love most about photography and what's the bit you hate most?

For me I love the feeling after I've just been snapping away at a bird that's come really close...I know I've got a brilliant pic and I can't wait to get home and look at it :D

And the bit I hate is going through all my shots after a day of photography and trying to decide which to delete :gag:

I agree with you about knowing you've got a great shot and cant wait to get it home to play with it properly. And post it up here of course!

The bit I hate the most is changing lenses in the field. Its fiddly, there's never anywhere nice to do it, and Im always in a rush in order to prevent dust getting in my camera.

Good idea for a thread btw. ;)

i think the best for me is of course producing a great picture, of any subject.

the worse is the cost of things.

and like joe, swapping lenses about,

and ALWAYS needing the longer/shorter lens you left at home!

I like the social aspect of it. The internet has made this more possible I suppose. I sometimes grab a photobuddy from flickr and head out into town. I've met some great people this way and learned a lot.

I enjoy posting to my website and receiving comment and criticism. Again, thanks to the internet.

What don't I enjoy? I hate it when I think I have a great picture on the card, you know the one - the one that makes you smile on the way home because you have the shot of the day, but when you get it home it's sh*t.

I enjoy much more than I dislike. Obviously, or I wouldn't be here :)

Best: Getting the shot. You see it, push the button and the shutter clicks. You know you've got it and you don't even need to look at the screen.

Worst: Not getting the shot. Its annoying to miss a photo for some reason but the worst times are when I get too scared to take a photo.

Everything else is just life. Changing lenses doesn't bother me much. Needing more zoom, well theres not much I can do about it when I'm out so I try my best to adapt.

can't think of a best thing, everythings good in it's own way.

Worst is definitely thinking you've got a shot and then opening it up to find it's out of focus

the best: getting that shot you've been thinking about for days, and before you even process it you know its going to come out great. letting life just happen and doing what I know I can do. going down to the river during warm summer evenings and catching the golden glow over the water...
getting published and selling images for lots £...(as has just happened :D )

The worst: pikey students ripping off your work as their own and being bloody rude about it when you confront them. copyright laws...students don't know and don't seem to care.

The Best: When someone says "Wow" after looking at one of your shots (very rare for me!)

The Worst: Photos of children or even worse - babies :|

The Best: Knowing you've got it right. You've captured the moment. The light was... When People say WoW

The Worst: Getting home and finding out that the shot is OOF / blurred. Or chuffing up the copy you had on disk before you backed it up.

The best : When you get a "wow" from the wife (for a photo :))

The Worst : Stupid ***** illogical **** UK , where you can't take photos at the kids sports day , can't take photos of public buildings etc

The best - Knowing I can take dozens of photo's and the film won't run out.
The worst - Usually having to delete dozens 'cos they were rubbish. :'(

The best - being out with the camera not having to worry about much more than getting some nice shots

The Worst - Not getting a shot, or just not having any ideas about what to photograph (also the problem of it always looking better in camera!)

P.S Am I the only one who doesnt delete photos? I dump them all on my pc and tend to keep them all! I always think I am going to need a shot if I delete it :(

I used to never delete my photos but I was taking like 100 a day and that mounts up :P

Even when I only keep the ones I like, my "photos" folder is getting close to 4 gb :D

I've become ruthless with Lightroom now - anything below 3 stars on my own personal scale immediately gets the chop.

Best - 'Wow' comments from friends
Worst - Not having enough time (bloody career gets in the way)

Best - getting a photo I'm happy with, let alone showing anyone else yet.
Worst - for now cost.... that may change later on.

Best - Having a multinational company asking to use your image
Worst - Them only offering you £20 which you turn down and they don't counter offer. :(

In truth for me it's probably, best is when your close friends see some of your work and ask "did you really take that photo" and worst having an image in your head that no matter what you can't replicate.

The Worst: Photos of children or even worse - babies :|
Couldn't agree more :)

Best.....getting praise for a posted pic, from some of the seriously good photographers on here.
Worst...knowing those pics were more luck than skill!!

hehe..agreed! :)

And Jimmy Lemon - no your not the only one. I dont tend to delete images. I like to keep them all. But i will probably soon regret it when my hard drive (plus many others as backups in the future most likely) are full of photos..

:)

What I love best, is the odd moment (not often) I have an image I'm happy with, and others like. Mind you this is a once in blue moon moment

What I hate most, is my shyness, I still have a problem with taking shots when theres to many people around :cuckoo: I know- I'm stoopid :D

Best

1) Being able to capture images and moments in time that have alot of personal and public significance.

2) Getting the shot right in-camera after a long duration of shooting the same subject getting it wrong and spending hours in photoshop trying to correct a mistake.

3) Getting great feedback from friends and family (and here ofcourse)

4) The great feeling you get when you are 'in the field' and knowledge of photography and camera's helps you get the shot rather than relying on sheer luck.

Worst

1) Spending hours in photoshop when if I had taken 5 more seconds to readjust settings the shot would of been great without needing to doctor it.

2) Getting the 'perfect' shot only to find it's OOF when viewed on the pc.

3) Fiddly lens changing.

No you are not! I also have trouble taking candid people shots. I am ok if I am not actually pointing the camera at strangers, but still need to improve where people are concerned. I am however, quite determined to conquer the problem!

I think a lot of us suffer from this......"Cap'n, we needs a training day"! (delivered in pirates accent)

Best
  • Having a personal WOW factor when flicking thru Aperture/Lightroom and seeing a good shot ive taken (rare)
  • Getting out and about, meeting new people and getting access to areas I really shouldnt.. (im naturally very shy)
  • Getting positive feedback from anyone.

Worst

  • Dropping my 1d down a flight of concrete steps
  • My 5D not turning on...
  • Counting up how much ive spent in the last 3 years and then looking at the 3 or 4 good photos ive taken in that time...

P.S Am I the only one who doesnt delete photos? I dump them all on my pc and tend to keep them all! I always think I am going to need a shot if I delete it :(

Same here, I have never deleted anything.

Unfortunately I know exactly what you mean.

Michael.

Just feel like people are taking notice of what I'm doing (where in reality they probably don't care) with them thinking 'what a dweeb'. I don't know why I feel like it, shouldn't really, I'm just doing something I enjoy.
Oh and also need the practice

Great thread

Best... Getting that perfect shot (even more so when it's all on film and I can't even check the image until it's developed and printed)

Worst... Rushing into things without taking the time to think about the basics such as light, composition, framing, etc. Oh, and the bloody darkroom - I hate it!

:agree:

(although swapping lenses out in the field is just a pain. Almost lost one over a cliff once !)
