Just got a free copy of the Beano in the Mirror this morning, and it's says get £1 off next weeks Beano. So how much is the comic now? Must be a few quid, last time I bought it, it was about sixpence lol. Do kids still read it ?

I've no idea how much it is these days.

That said - some time ago, I'm sure it was on the news up here (in the land of D.C Thomson) that the Beano was only available as an online comic now ?

Bonus! As I get The Mirror. Of course, the ever changing drawing styles over the years meant that most of the content in the comic aren't anything like the old days. But, at least the old stalwarts that are David Sutherland (Bash Street Kids) and Tom Paterson (Calamity James) are still going strong and Bananaman is now being drawn in virtually the same style as when he was "born" in Nutty comic in 1982 (the recent new-style Bananaman was awful!).

Am still quite sad about the demise of The Dandy, which was Desperate Dan's home place (I think he should have been kept alive in his own comic strip in The Beano - in his proper form as drawn in the 60's of course). It tried to live on in interactive digital format but apparently it was a disaster due to technological constraints and was dropped after only 9 "issues". However, you can still get the Christmas annual in ye olde worlde book format.

Not even bothered to read it, I would much prefer a bike magazine or something :)

Proper comic? the Dandy? Pah, whizzer and chips all the way. The numbskulls* best strip ever.

*at least i think they were in whizzer and chips , might have been the beezer.

I used to read the Beano, and my brother the Dandy.
Worked well as we used to swap when we were done with our own.
Both good IMO.

BTW a quick google reveals that the Beano was thruppence, late sixties / early 70's

Just thinking, I must have gotten a fair bit in pocket money then. Used to get a comic a quarter of sweets ( usually Pineapple chunks, or bon bons etc ) five Park Drive ( cheapest ciggies at the time ) and a bottle of Tizer or Cream Soda. Yuk used to have such poor taste as kids. Just thinking, my brothers and our mates must have pooled our money :)

My 6 year old started getting a pound of pocket money a week. We told him he could spend it on what wanted, like sweets, or he could save it. And that's what he does. He saves it for Lego or teenage mutant ninja turtles, which we order off Amazon for him. Because we were so proud of him for not wasting it on sweets a while back we increased it to £1.50. Doesn't sound like much but I think its well enough for a 6 year old. As he gets older and starts doing more chaws eg dishes, we'll put it up. He's learning a valuable lesson I think, about saving and how you get rewarded for doing little things that help. I'm just dreaddng the days when him and his younger twin sisters want damn mobiles.

I bet that didn't even add up to a couple of bob ;)
Cream soda nothing wrong with that,
Tizer doesn't taste like it used to though :(

Some prices in 1971

Mars bar 2p

First class stamp 3p

Pint of milk 6p

Loaf of bread 9½p

Pint of bitter 11p

Packet of cigarettes 27p

Gallon of petrol 33p

In 1972 a pack of 20 Players No 6 cost 21p for Regular or Extra Mild and you got five vouchers or coupons. I forgot all about the coupons in Ciggies, used to collect them like mad as a kid. Most kids did collect coupons back then, imagine kids collection cigarette coupons today

Think PG tips had Wild Animal cards - I remember I would hunt through the box for them.
