Went to the Chinese New Year on Sunday here in Newcastle and took photo's yesterday I put them up in General Photo Sharing for comments and sent them to the local BBC website for submission.

Well just received an email back telling me they had chosen three for the local site. :woot::woot:

Right now I'm walking on air and have just realised you don't have a smiley big enough to match the grin on my face...:D:D
 
OMG the BBC are ripping you off man using your pics for free you should think about the hard working pros ;)

On a more serious note, congrats it's always nice when others like your work.

I'd imagine the BBC will like any content they can get for free...

"By sharing any contribution (including any text, photographs, graphics, video or audio) with the BBC you agree to grant to the BBC, free of charge, permission to use the material in any way it wants (including modifying and adapting it for operational and editorial reasons) for BBC services in any media worldwide (including on the BBC's site accessed by international users). In certain circumstance the BBC may also share your contribution with trusted third parties"

So if they really like your work they can sell it on without your permission :thumbs:
 
As I've only had the camera for just under a month and still learning what the buttons do there is no way I'd expect to make money from the images I take, this is after all a hobby for me and not away to make a living (I'd more than likley die from stavation before I manage to sell an image).

I'm just overt the moon that someone out there says hey I like that image enough to stick on our website and credit me with taking it.

I understand the comment about taking my pics instead of paying pros and that they now have the right to use the images in anyway they see fit including making money from it, but hey do you remember the feeling the first time someone liked your work enough to want to use it??
 
keenbfb - that is all well and good - but how do you feel about being USED by the BBC - because that is what they have done, cleverly, so you think you haven't been.

They appeal to people's pride, vanity, whatever you word describes the feeling best....and make money from it. BIG money.

You might not EXPECT to get money for your pictures, but are so happy that they will make big money from the use of your pictures...and you don't even get anything towards buying a new lens (and a good image sold by the Beeb could easily earn £1500 for one use....) and you have signed yours over for free for ever. But they will continue to make the money from them....because you have agreed to it.

It is a great feeling to know others like your work, but surely you should get your share of the earnings off them - or are you so charitable and wealthy that you can give large corporations charitable donations of that order. You one use should have been worth at least £100 per image TO YOU, for that first broadcast - you have already given them £300.

They prey on people like you, so they can get huge numbers of images which they then license around the world...snow pictures. They raked in over 24,000 in one week.....how much money have they ripped those image makers off by? Who knows, but it is a substantial sum.

The same goes for these competitions you see that demand all rights for your right to just enter - for a camera or some other blingy trinket.....the organisers give out a prize worth...??? £1000 ??? BUT, they get £1,000,000 worth of imagery in through the back door by this method.

It is time more people were made aware of what they are losing.

Thankfully it doesn't impact onmy work. BUT, it does impact on many people's.

And don't worry the millions the Beeb will make from your pics will just go towards Jonathon Ross's salary ;)
 
#35 is my favourite.
The DOF is good...gives the dragon the sense of real motion.

They need content for their wesites and will get it free of charge if they can.

But I'm quite shocked to see exactly how low they would sink. I love the use of the word "share" in their T&C's.

a1ex, its not a pro's versus amateur thing, necessarily. If everybody stopped supplying pictures for free, then we'd ALL be able to earn a bit more from our skills.

One of the other channels (either 4 or 5) had in their t&cs that if you submitted a pic to them and as a result of it they were involved in legal action then you would be responsible for not only any legal costs that you yourself may incur, but you were also liable for the tv channel's legal costs as well...:suspect:

If your making money from photos your a pro by definition.

I don't really care about the argument it just makes me chuckle that the members of this forum can never just be happy that someone else is happy. Maybe the OP doesn't care about the money I know I wouldn't as I have no interest in making money from photography and would actually rather give my pictures away than recieve money for them.

Lensflare your right they have appealed to my vanity and I’m under no illusion that if they hadn't been free then they wouldn't be on the site my images are not that good.

There were plenty of professional togs there all taking pictures and I expect that they had places to sell the pictures on too without using the BBC but without thousands of people like me they would also have that revenue stream as well.

I’ve seen a thread or two about how to sell your images to the press etc and had I taken a picture that was in that league such as an image of a plane crashing into the Hudson then the BBC site wouldn’t have been on my list of places to submit it to. Until I’m at the standard where every image I take is worth money where else other than the BBC am I going to see my images published?

At the end of the day my ego has been massaged and I’ve gone up 3 hat sizes and I’ll sleep well tonight.

It's great that people can see their pictures in print or on the web. It's just a pity that some of them are being exploited by large and fabulouly rich organisations like the BBC.

They say that you're either part of the problem or part of the solution, a1ex.....

The make them pay argument is obviously a valid one.... If we give for free, how are we ever gonna expect to make money etc. But there is something here that is worth more than money to a new photographer, just in it for a hobby.... The OP is obviously very pleased that his eye for a good pic has been acknowledged. Sometimes a little recognition for what we do is worth more than money.

Getting anything published is something to be proud of also... it gives a photographer credibility and you can't buy that for cheep either. Re-read the OP's initial statements and you can virtually feel the pride.... Lets not take the shine off it... there'll be plenty of time for paid work.

I personally have done a number of weddings... all for free... It has taken the pressure off me and allowed me to get comfortable doing them. I'm honing my skills. Some might say I'm taking work away from Pro wedding photographers, I say, I'm in training and when I'm finished training i'll start charging, and I'll still be taking work off someone else.

Chrispix - nearly the same but not quite. The wedding couples were not making big money out of the pictures you took fo rthem, on the pretext that you would enjoy seeing them use your pictures.....it was just for them.

These competitions and the TV companies are getting a business off the back of people who are willing to be exploited.

The whole concept of a large, commercial organisation making money out of people is wrong, plain and simple. If the picture will stand up on its own merit then they would pay for it...the problem is also that the use of inferior photography because it is free (I haven't looked at the pix, so not pointing at any in particular, just the concept) rather than better that would be paid for simply dilutes the whole broadcasting/publishing world.

Papers are the same - free crap pictures, or good photography that has to be paid for...so they use the free crap. How does that progress the creative world? They don't care anymore about the finished article, provided they can make money out of someone elses loss.....that is what it actually is - Jerry has lost and they have won. They should have paid him fair and square, without him having to even ask for it. That by supplying those pictures to them, they have taken all his rights off him in an underhand way is even worse. It isn't very good that others actually think this is an OK way of going about things. It is the same as pick-pocketing.
 
I don't see whats the matter with sending your pics in longs you know all the T&Cs.

Some people don't want to make money from their photography you know... They do it because it's fun. So if they get a thrill out of seeing their pic on the bbc then good on them.

They could always put the license fee up to pay for the pictures they use? Sure that would go down a storm.

Congrats to the OP, I'd be chuffed to see my pics on teh BBC just a few months in.
 
WHY? He has had his eyes all his life. It is only his camera that is new. It is the eye that matters.

I have looked now, and those three are cracking pictures in their own right.

Everyone is chuffed at seeing their pictures used. Even hardened pros with over 20 years standing still get a buzz every time - if they didn't they wouldn't still be doing it.

Wouldn't you also like a nice reward over and above just seeing them? Nothing like a cheque for £500 landing on the doorstep to change your mind...those 3 would easily earn that in one repro fee (not each, together)...but they will be earning it for the Beeb now, not the photographer. He just gets the satisfaction of knowing that someone else is profiting from his eye.

I don't personally no. So i'm guessing theres more people like me.
I very rarely even show my photos to anyone at all let alone want to make money out of it. Photograpy is very personal to me.
 
And you haven't given yours to a big company to profit from either......
 
thats a fair point though photography means different things to different people....Personally i cant wait to have a published picture :D... if it ever happens :lol:
 
I've actually got quite a few pics on the bbc from a few years ago :lol:

At the time i loved seeing them up there and i don't regret it. I think they're still on the bbc devon site somewhere.

The problem with giving anything away (and I was in sales for over a decade so I do kind of know what I'm on about here) is that you devalue the product. Certainly some discounting will always go on but by giving something away you are effectively saying that is has no intrinsic value, otherwise why would you give it away? That's how business works and people coming in as amatuers and being happy to give their product for free just means that the end user starts to expect it for free. Slippery slope time.........

So I can see where photographers can get a bit bent and out of shape over it. It devalues not only the originator but the whole marketplace. The fact that the BBC can then go on and reap the value from those images is an indication of the fact that they are business savy and those submitting their images are not. Depends how much value you place on ego massage I suppose :)

To the OP, that's not aimed at you in particular but at the big picture, I'd congratulate you on having pics of high standard in the first place. It's your property and yours to do with as you see fit.
 
AliB no offence taken at all been married 20 years so know any type of criticism is not going to hurt me:D

I can see both sides of the debate here and to me it all comes down to reward to many the reward comes in the form of cash and that’s not a bad thing you wont survive long in this world without it, but to many others the reward comes in the form of ego such as myself it just feels good to know I’ve taken an image that others feel worthy of praise and as such I have my reward.

Enjoy the feeling and remember that next time, you know you can charge for your photos.
 
Theres always going to be photographers that do it for fun. It's something that anyone who wants to go pro just has to deal with.

Oh I agree, and if they were not going to licence the images to themselves and potentially make money off the back of them then I don't think I'd mind at all. It's the fact that they retain the licence to sell it themselves and profit without passing any of that back to the originator. It's a bit naughty on one hand and extremely clever of them to exploit people for a little "ego massage" like that.
