I want to wipe the board with the buggers, win the series outright 3:1:1, and officially win rather than just retain the Ashes.
They've done it to us often enough in the past!

Well done this morning to England retaining the ashes. Job done, and well done, lads! You have certainly set an example to those overpaid football stars that apparently represented us in the world cup, that's for sure. Well done!!!

Graeme Swann is a relative, he's my wife's cousins son, so second cousin I suppose, nothing to add to the thread as I don't follow cricket but it's my only claim to fame

Nice batting from Cook, who has now scored over 750 runs in this series, making him the second highest scoring englishman in an ashes series ever, with the highest scoring over 900 runs back in the 1920's.
Shame about Colly, but don't think we should drop him, he adds much more than his batting to the side, his bowling helps, and his fielding is great.
If nothing else he has big enough shoulders to take the pressure of possibly being dropped and take the heat of anyone else in the side.

hmmm, might be longer than that. Last ODI in Aus is 6th Feb, 1st world Cup Game in India on 22nd and that could run till early April. I guess they will pop home inbetween but will there be time for a celebration, given several of the test team will be in world cup team too? :shrug:
thats only 2 weeks and 2 days and doesn't include travelling times, seeing their families, training, lunch with the PM, blah blah blah.... if there is to be one, might be better after world cup, its not beyond the realms of feasibility we might have BOTH to celebrate **crosses fingers, toes, etc**
oh yes and doesn't include the current money saving of local government, the MET, and so on...

They've already said they aren't doing it. I think those members of the squad staying for the ODI's will be at home for only two or three days before going off for the World Cup.
Then of course there is the sporting reason....the 2005 Ashes team never reached the same level ever again (or played together). Certainly perceived that they go too cocky/carried away. Certainly when they went to Oz in 2006 they were very poorly prepared. Current regime very keen to avoid the same mistakes....

Quite frankly that's pants, and a typically pathetic British attitude.
There are several reasons that the 2005 team never developed fully on their promise, but appearing in Trafalgar Sq to allow their supporters to celebrate certainly wasn't one of them. One day of celebration certainly isn't going to affect your match performance 14 months later.

Some of them will have been away from home for two months so that two day break at home is probably too short anyway.
It's fairly well documented and understood that the team and coaches of the 2005 series lost focus. They certainly never played again with anything like the same intensity. Whilst what we have just seen is one of the great team performances from any team from any sport to leave these shores I think it's good to look at is as the start of potentially a fantastic era for English cricket. It's pretty clear that the players and management see they have an opportunity to build something very special and won't let anything get in the way. Would I rather they spent a day on a bus or focused on the World Cup ? No competition in my mind. We've never won the World Cup..sport at the highest level is all about tiny margins. The next major competition is days away not 14 months away....it's only a day but it's also 50% of the time some of these players will have at home.
It's not about not wanting to celebrate it's about winning. That's not very English and great to see in my mind.

The 2005 team may have lost focus, but they also lost half the team before they could play again - Simon Jones, Freddie, Vaughan, Giles, getting injured, Trescosthic having his stress related issue, etc. 2005 was the best ashes series ever simply because we played the aussies when they were at there peak - with 5 great players and 6 very good ones. 2009 was satisfying because it was a positive move after the 2007 whitewash, and this series has been fantastic because we have finally stuffed it right up em.
And the good thing about this side is that they are young enough for the bulk of the players to go back in 4 years to give the aussies some more.
with regards the celebrations, I live Oop Nooorrf, so doesn't make a bit of a difference!

The 2005 did have some injuries retirements but for whatever reason they never played with the same intensity and the preparation was shoddy (warm up matches for 2006/7 Ashes). I was unfortunate enough to make the trip to The Gabba in 2006 to see Harmison shove the first ball down second slips throat.....
