The Ashes 2013 thread

Incidentally, the first cricket Yv ever watched was the 2005 Ashes series.

Remember Edgbaston, when England won by two runs? This was nearly as bad. I turned the telly off and listened on Radio 4, couldn't bear to watch!

Not the greatest start to the 2nd Test........ hopefully Bell's form will continue and Trott will add a few to his account too!

I can see the drama form the 1st Test carrying on throughout the series at this rate!

Just when it looked like a batting mans dream we have a terrible start.

As you say, let's hope Bell and Trott can hold on and put some numbers on the board...

Maybe not ;)

Turning into a bit of a humiliation for the Aussies.

This tweet made me smile
"What's that u say, Skippy? The real Australian cricket team are stuck down an abandoned mineshaft?"

I'm guessing he's referring to Bell. It was close enough for him to ask for a decision in my opinion. He got one, albeit probably wrong.

Not according to some of the screenshots doing the rounds, for example this one on Twitter. Ball is clearly not in the hand as it hits the ground.

that is how I saw it on the 2nd camera angle shown Dave, though was still impossible to say for sure if fingers were under ball - the angle on that screen shot says they weren't - not unless he has huge long 3rd and 4th finger

If anyone is interested, we were there yesterday, lower Edrich stand, 4 rows from the front but right behind the main bank of pro-snappers, so my photo opportunity was limited. As always, I was seriously ill-equipped for the size of the Lords pitch, but did my best with D300 and 70-200 f2.8 followed by some serious cropping! http://yvonnewhitephotography.com/ashes-photographs-lords/

I would agree, there appears to be a finger alongside the ball (from his left hand), and at least another 2 alongside, he would need to be a contortionist to somehow get a finger under that ball.

The way he has cupped his hands next to the ball would also lead to suspect he slightly misjudged the flight and its just not gone to hand.

Yes, its the hand cupping that convinced me finally, you cannot physically have your hands cupped like that and still have a finger under the ball. We are probably in the minority though and for the record, would say the same if it was a England player catching.

But hey ho, as this series is already showing, these freaky decisions are probably going to balance out over the series anyway. ;)

The scorecard for this Lords Test looked VERY familiar to me ...

... just the words England and Australia were in the wrong places! :woot::banana::woot:

From the Telegraph...

Cricket Germany has offered to replace England as Australia's opponents. "If you fancy a competitive game we are only an hour's flight from London,"

Hissing Northern weather!

The 3rd Test's forecast is of one day's play then four day's rain. Meanwhile, say the same people, the South East might see a bit of rain Friday morning and Monday afternoon [which would have been after the end of the match anyway!]

Not the way we'd like to retain the Ashes but always good to see a few Aussie :dummy:s!

Could be a different story in 6 months...

Looks a bit possible that England may actually win the series on merit rather than rely on the weather...

@ Jon... :finger: See, I didn't put the mouth on it!!!

This 2013 series has a flavour of 2005 and your big mouth could just be the difference that tips the balance! :p

This was another fabulous Test Match that swung like a pendulum! When I came home at 3pm and caught up with the day's play I was fairly confident ... that Australia would win quite easily!

Absolutely fantastic!!!

When Bell got out early this morning I thought we'd struggle but thankfully Bresnan came to the party to give us something to bowl at :D

Definitely a team effort this series.

The finale to the 2nd Aussie innings was a gripper.

I was wondering just how late they would go with trying to avoid a 99% empty Durham ICG in the morning. with my brain teasing out a "rain stops any play on day 5".

Was surprised to that with light fading that Swann was allowed to bowl pace by the umpire, but it certainly did the job!

Was diving in and out all day (thanks to Sky Go).

SO The Ashes in Oz (Brisbane) on 21st November will be another feast. I may try to go!

The sun came back out around 7pm, Steve. Even the weather gods were on England's side ;).

There was golden sunshine as Broad took the last wicket.

I got to see the last few overs and the extras on the TV

Yes the sun was out but the actual light level seemed to be dipping.

Either way a cracking end to the test and Brosd's finale was tremendous.... 11 wickets against the Aussies - a very good haul to add to Australia's sport introspection which started befor last year's Olympics ended.. A trip to visit Aussie news web sites is worth a few minutes of your time. Some Gems!

So on to the Oval where I spent from 1963-68 watching cricket from my bedroom window in the flats overlooking the ground on the Harleyford Road side of the ground!

No discussion on final test?

TBH I feel like it's a bit of an anti climax.... the series is wrapped up, we've put out a pretty weak bowling attack and the Aussie's have taken full advantage of that and some useful batting conditions.

Difficult to see how we can force a win from the position we're in at the moment with nearly half the match gone and a threat of more rain tomorrow.......

4-0 would have been nice, although my prediction was 3-1 to England ;)

Yup, kinda agree. All the intensity of previous tests does not seem to there. A 4-0 would have been super but unlikely to happen now. What does concern me, will this be a momentum shift by giving the Aussies some confidence for the return series?

We were there the first day at the Oval and tbh, it did feel a little anti-climatic. The people around us were chatting more about their personal lives than paying any attention to the cricket; the Aussies sitting in front of us indulged in a few half hearted cat calls to Broad and KP but nothing particularly amusing, just sounded bitter and uninterested really. The first thing the chap next to me said when I took my seat was "Have you seen that team selection?" I immediately got the impression he was suitably unimpressed, as were we to be fair, given it goes against everything Andy Flower and this team have said or done previously. I am all for blooding young players but only in matches where it makes sense to do so. For once I actually agree with Bob Willis - when you have the Aussies on the ropes, you pin them down and use them as floor cloths - not let them off lightly the way we're doing. Apart from anything else, they had a tailor made Bressie Oval replacement in Tremlett and didn't use him

I expect the weather will give England the draw in this one, but like OT, it will be undeserved :(

As an aside, I was personally not happy at the Kia Oval - the aforementioned Aussies were a group of 4 in their mind 20's and were built like Dunny Doors - I am 5'2" and couldn't see a darned thing all day! £65 to look at the back of a head all day was frustrating. I could see between them to the pavilion end stumps which was fine until they lost more interest in the game and the only thing I kept seeing was the bloody peaks of their baseball caps as they turned to talk to each other :bang: Add in the sunshine all day, which I am not good at sitting in and lets be honest, you don't expect in this country, and I was a tad frazzled and fed up by the end of it all. Anyway, I did take the camera and managed a few pictures in between massive Aussie heads, they are on my hobby blog if anyone wants to have look [link in sig]

eidt: just stuck a few in the photosharing section too

Yeah, I think in years gone by it would have made a difference but the way the Aussie's are at the moment the phrase "The sun can shine from a dog's ar5e once in a while" springs to mind.

I just don't think there's any real consistency there to be a big threat to us.

I posted this on an Aussie car forum that i`m on, had some good banter with the Aussies, but this is a bloody silly way to end a series.

"What a disgraceful way to end the match and series. No blame on anyone but the ICC and some stupid rules. They should give the whole crowd their money back. Disgraceful.

Clarke sportingly declared, we went for it and the crowd got cheated. Bloody shambolic.
"

Oh, you short game watchers! :nono:

I was enjoying every ball until the game ended for bad light. I bet the sober spectators did too. No one was really cheated - it was a very exciting fifth day's TEST cricket after a day and a half were lost to weather and on Thursday night, after day two, the draw was what we desperately dreamt of!

Listening to the presentation right now, the Kennington crowd are being a foul embarrassment!

I am with the others, the ICC offer no flexibility or common sense - they need the pistol they regularly shoot themselves in the foot with removing. You can't blame the umps, they followed the laws. Clarke might have been in their ears, but so would Cook have been if the roles were reversed and if it wasn't for Clarkes decision, we would never have had that fantastic afternoon of play. However, it still feels like a ridiculous way to end it all.... however....can I just say...

WE WON THE ASHES!!!

As someone who officiates at a decent level of sport, accuracy is key and safety is paramount.

Light is light and if the decision was made earlier in the game, the same standard should be applied 1st day or last over.

The ICC rules are for fair play and safety. Common sense should not override this.

If someone was seriously injured, the where there's blame there's a claim brigade would be out, and would the umpires get a pat on the back? No not in the slightest, would it be seen as common sense? No it would be seen as a shocking decision to play on despite the light.

The sportsmanship of delaying running in and then the dead ball is terrible though, all sport should be about enjoyment and winning/losing with your heads held high.

5 days you have to win and it's only a game.

People are being gassed to death in Syria, and people should keep focus of what is important.

So how do they play day/night matches?

The floodlights were on, is there some sort of dimmer control that they turn up for genuine day night games?

Doesn't make sense...

Different kit, different ball (easier to see white ball in the gloom)
Also strength of the lights and when they are turned on, they weren't on early enough and can't be the primary light source afaik.
