Had the wireless on all day at work.

Entertaining day to say the least.

the event? I thought the GP was a few weeks back and Mcjock McMurray won the pitter pater hitting a ball over a net competition

Is standing around in a field for 5 days, and going for tea and sarnies a sport?

No, it is not really a sport, that is why it is popular worldwide and has stood the test of time.

Is being such a misery guts a sport as well? I`m pretty good at being a misery guts, perhaps we could have a challenge to see which of us thee most miserable old so and so?.........:D

A lot of people have been touting this as a some side game, but today proved its going to be close. Be interesting to see how they fair tomorrow.

I think England will edge it in the end, if they turn up!

Its a bit like watching paint dry as far as I am concerned TBH

yes!! You can sit around all day, getting a nice tan [given they only play in fair weather], drinking yourself slowly stupid, sing a few songs that are considerably cleverer than most fluffball chants, whilst your national team toil in front of you and cross your fingers round your pint that they stuff it to the Aussies - what isn't to like!! :D

Sorry, a lot more happens than in the whiff whaff on grass.

More can happen in one day of cricket, like today, than in a whole fortnight of Mr McMurray bouncing his ball (had a really good nap last Sunday after someone in the house switched to the final on TV, instant cure to insomnia ;)).

Hmmm... My dentist had his nurse watching the web reports in one window while he was looking at my X-ray on another. Luckily he was still happy after seeing the Stones over the weekend - he's a grumpy sod (but an excellent dentist!)

If you have the groundsmen prepare a bowlers' wicket, why bat first?

I had butterflies before the start of the Test yesterday!

Got some Aussie relatives over for a month so England losing just isn't an option

Was disappointed with England's first innings initially but provided we get some quick wickets this morning it would appear to be a reasonable total even though most of our batmen gifted their wickets away, unlike previous series where McGrath's been bending the ball round corners and Warne's been ragging it square on the first day!

Just seen that Broad passed his fitness test and will be available to bowl immediately!

So you bowl last and get the best value from your superior spinner ;)

Also possibly because you misunderstood the first day's weather forecast :whistling:

albeit, you don't necessarily need to wait for the 2nd innings to take advantage of a bowlers wicket... ;)

Basically, a bowlers wicket, should in theory, 'deteriorate' over the 5 days, as in starts dry and gets dryer, starting to crumble and crack and make the ball even more unpredictable and harder to hit/more likely to take wickets... so, you bat 1st in both innings, getting the relative best of the pitch and bowl second when your bowlers can make the most of it..... in theory.... however this is England and Australia, frankly, anything could happen

Indeed, but expecting Swanny to tear 'em a new one in the 2nd innings much as Anderson has in the 1st .

They've recovered a bit but I looked and they were progressing nicely under clear skies then bang..... 5 wickets for 9 runs!!! C'mon England!

England should be back batting now, apparently the only person that thought Agar was not out was Erasmus. Tailenders trying hard and as someone said on twitter, when a tailender gets bat on ball, it can be hard to get them out as they tend to hit it to previously undiscovered points of the ground

Agar isn't a tailender - he's Australia's new young #3!

I used to bat anywhere from 1-6 and people said that about me

Not to mention terms that would get me banned from TP because I'm a leftie

So, in the first over or 2 of Eng 2nd innings, there was an LBW appeal by the aussies. The ball was to clip leg stump but given not out. Why, it seemed to be just because the umpires decision was not out? Confused?

If the computer says the ball was only clipping the stump then the umpire's call stands as there is not the confidence in the result to overrule.

If it says it is hitting the stump full then it is out, if all other requirements for a dismissal are met.

because if it was only 'clipping', as in a small percentage of ball clipping the very outside reaches of stumps/bails, decisions stays with on field umpire to allow for the element of doubt/margin of error on the prediction equipment - given it is only a [fairy accurate] 'prediction' of the balls travel had it not hit something beforehand.

Going to take a day and a bit to post something defensible in my opinion. Aussie's in the driving seat. :-(

Lots of noise in the press this morning about the two very dodgy 3rd umpire decisions yesterday. Marais Erasmus must have needed ice packs on his ears to sleep last night.

Still another day and anything could happen, this test has swung one way and then the other and I can't quite believe we have only had two days of it. if this is a warning for the rest of summer, it is going to be and exciting and interesting one.

Oh and for Lyntons benefit [ :naughty: ] cricket is a game where the more you understand the laws, the strategies, the thinking, [and believe me, after watching for 8 years, more seriously for the last 3 years, I still only know and understand about 5%] the better you enjoy it... I guess a bit like golf, which personally, like Mark twain, I consider to be a good walk spoiled, but the fans love it ;)

Pains me to say it but the Aussies are definitely ahead, the first hour today will be critical and could decide the outcome.

At the risk of sounding like a "whinging POM", England were definitely on the rough end of some bad decisions..... Trott should have been given not out (the on field umpire even seemed dismayed by the 3rd Umpire's call) and Agar was out of his ground when the bails were removed.

Where the former's concerned, I guess if Root had called for a review the Trott incident would never have happened?

Still, as you rightly said YV, it's very interesting and exciting. Whoever wins this game (as cliche as it is) cricket will definitely be the winner! Great advertisement for the purest form of the game :)

Have to agree Russ. I am not in the camp of shouting for the 3rd umpires head on a block, there are precious few top class umps anyway and whilst they can all make absolute howling mistakes, generally they are very good. I would however like to hear his reasoning behind both decisions, I think that is needed for clarity and transparency in the sport.

the Trott one was weird - on field says not out, DRT shows inconclusive, DRT overrides on field decision

surely this should have been the equivalent on Umpire's Shout for an lbw claim?

Agreed..... admittedly Hot Spot didn't show the ball's contact with the bat but we now know it wasn't fully functional, I suppose if the 3rd Umpire didn't know that at the time the evidence available to him was conclusive in showing there was no contact hence him overriding the umpire's decision?

Broad was out, clear as day. Shame the Aussies didn't have any reviews left.

Not looking good for our boys, 71-0 and the Aussies seem to have learnt from Bell's innings

Yeah, getting twitchy already..... I grew up with cricket in the 90s and the scare of watching them then run deep

Still could go anyway, this test match.

Who'd of thought after day one they would still be playing on day 5! Absorbing cricket!

If England can get an early wicket tomorrow it could be wrapped up by lunch time, some how I expect it to be dragged out and could end up very close.

I have a serious confession to make.........

watched a couple of hours of it yesterday...

was quite good.

England one nil up in the series. Great match, as an England fan I want less tight games but it has been a great show for the neutrals.

WAAAAAAY too close for my liking..... especially when I was watching it before lunch with my Aussie relatives

There's nothing like the tension of a Test Match as the advantage swings backwards and forwards between the teams like a pendulum, and this was a stunner - a bit ill mannered, but a stunning Test Match!

BTW, cricket is like motor racing. The more you understand of what's going on, the more you appreciate what you're watching.

Incidentally, the first cricket Yv ever watched was the 2005 Ashes series. Stick with this Ashes series and you'll probably get as hooked on the game as she is now!
