Hiya, fairly new here and to photography.

This is a light hearted take on a serious question!

I suspect I'm not alone, when I say that I constantly trawl through websites, classifieds and magazines for new glass with what can only be described as wanton lust.

However, once said object of lust has been found, and nearly saved for...........the *conscience* kicks in.

What has been your best/funniest/worst way of "easing" (persuading) your conscience?

I've tried "That old thing? Had it for years!" and "It was in the sale, so it was a bargain!" with varying success (none!).

*conscience* aka wife/husband/kids/mortgage/rent etc etc
 
My last big purchase was my olympus E3, was so exited when i won the bid war, the conscience kicked in afterwards.
A cold sweat started in my mouth then a gripping nausea. I did just blow almost 500 sheets after all. But i had the money and needed an upgrade,
I didn't really find a remedy for it all, felt much better once it had arrived though so got shooting with it straight away.
 
I've often had that moment when I've agree to by used or gone and brought new that I've thought should I really be buying this but then I think blow it, I earn the money I spend do if I choose to spend it on the thing I love, photography no one is going to make me feel guilty of that :thumbs: it that time when you've just spent several hundreds on x lens and then something crops up and you end up scrimping for a couple of months to keep in the black :bang:

I don't go too bonkers but I do spend more than I can really afford, I always think "well, you're a long time dead" and as I trudge towards the grave I try to get the tools I need to do what I want before the inevitable.
 
I'm the other way round, I look and look at the new nice shiny things and tell myself I cant really justify spending when I have something that works.

Nice really when wifey says " you just got a nice bonus , why don't you get a new camera":love: - Quick spend it before she decides we need something else doing :(

D7000 here I come:D
 
Its easy. You shouldn't feel guilty:

1. As long as you really dont over stretch yourself financially.

2.You genuinely, want and need the thing your buying. Not based on lust or want, but genuine justifiable need.

If feels like a lot money, just remember that you can always make more!

option 3 :D finally got rid of the kids ( till they come back for loans :razz: )
so finances so much better.:)
 
Just bought a D90 and 50mm and feel guilty for the money spent. Wife doesnt mind though but i feel like that when i buy anything!
 
My wife runs a small jewellery thing on ebay so i just insist i need kit to get better shots for her and she has no issues!

Latest addition was a Tamron 90mm F2.8 for quality macro of course ......... Now i need better lighting ......
 
That tamron is also on the wishlist as an alternative to the 105vr. Is it the new version. Are you pleased with the results?

This ↑ hahaha. If you feel you need new equipment, treat yourself?
We only live once & what might appear a waste of £ to one, is a treasured possession to another.
 
Save up and buy what you want to buy with it rather than spending money don't have reduces any chance of buyers remorse you may get. The problem comes when you have other things you should buy before your new lens or whatever. So you end up saving for that then save for the thing you want. You then really start to proritise what you need and want. I need a new TV in the bedroom but I wanted a 1DIV. I decided there are currently no TV's about that do what I want so bought the 1D :)

I just had something similar, hope my hearing isn't playing tricks on me, now what glass to buy :D
 
I get this feeling most of the time atm. Im currently doing a HND in mechanical engineering so that and work take up most of my time. Couple that with a passion for playing and watching football, photography takes a back seat alot of the time. So quite often i find myself looking at my camera equipment rather than using it :bang: but hopefully come the summer my HND will be finished and the football season will be over so i can really get stuck in with my camera :thumbs:

The other thing is never let whoever know the real value of what it is you buy, the new 300mm f/2.8IS was only £600 a real bargain ;)

I've bought most of my gear with money left to me in a will so I don't feel guilty. I bought a new sofa, 50" 3DTV and Blu Ray gear and got the kids a new TV each, paid off credit and store cards, catalogues and loans and then gave the wife my 550D and a couple of lenses and I got a new 7D and 5D2 with a 24-105 f4 L lens and a 580EX II, a 100-400 L and a 100 2.8 L macro and a few other bits.
I think we all got a good deal out of it, half on the home and half for me and an eternal thankyou to my grandma. I think of her everytime I use the camera so no, no guilt. Just make sure you use what you buy regularly or the guilt trip might end up too much.

Am currently looking at the 85mm f1.4 samyang........looks awesome and a "bargain"

Now, how to tell her about the f2.8 200mm telezoom I want:thinking:

My wife favorite one look at this it was on sale ii have saved you a fortune
 
I ask myself two questions (variant on those posed above):

1. Do I want it?
2. Can I afford it?

If the answer to both is yes, I buy it. The question of need does not arise. If it did, my other hobby wouldn't be motorsport, which is much more expensive than photography ;)
 
I am having that same issue commiting to the pruchase od a D7000.
My first DSLR.

I have been trying to save for it for near enough 5 years.. but i cant convince my self to spend that money.. then emrengencies take over and the money goes!
