The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Slightly better AF, viewfinder, sensor and just a newer body. After all, my camera is 8 years old now (bought used).
Ahh the new camera itch ;) I think you'll find the IV a worthy upgrade.

I don't know whether I'll ever upgrade now, after handling the A1 II I prefer the ergonomics of mine and I don't think there's enough of an upgrade to warrant the poorer (for me) ergonomics. I hope they don't make the grips even bulkier in future, if they go down the Z8 route I'll definitely not upgrade, that thing felt like a brick.

@ancient_mariner. I am just about to sell my back up a7iv, ultra low shutter count if you’re interested. Pm me if you are.

I've been wondering if, after 7 years, it's time to consider changing up from the A7III to the IV. A quick look at Park cameras shows they have 16 used A7IV bodies in stock and only 3 A7III bodies. Is it just that people bought the IV as the latest thing, then promptly traded up when the next thing came along, or does the IV suck a bit compared to the III for the relative cost? I can also get a grey IV brand new for less than a boxed in good condition used version.

Just to say, I'm in no hurry to change, but was more than a little puzzled.

I would imagine the difference in stock levels is probably down to Park offering peanuts for a used A7III as they won't be as easy to sell as an A7IV. Lots of people are ditching A7IV's right now as well ,trying to maximise what they get for them with the A7V about to launch.

A7IV will likely represent pretty good value soon especially with the A7V expected to come in at £3000. The main thing I don't personally like about the A7IV is the flippy screen but if that is not an issue for you, for photo anyway it will still hold it's own pretty well and everything else is a decent enough upgrade form an A7III. It would probably be wise to wait until the A7V launches next month as it will likely lower A7IV value even further.

Having shot Sony for over 10 years, I’ve decided to make the move over to Nikon, I already have the ZF and have just purchased the Z8. I’m not so much ditching my a7iv but looking for a good home for it.

What’s the reason for the change in system?

The rumor guy is saying the A7v has a new fast 33mp sensor.

We're in Pattaya. Can't say I'd recommend the hotel.

Just really wanted to try Nikon, suppose it’s scratching an itch. I’ve loved working with my Sony cameras over the years.

But having purchased the ZF it’s made me look at photography again in a different way, the Sony’s have always been work tools, but the ZF is fun to use, it just gets out of your way. In a similar way to the x100vi.

What gets in your way depends. I've MF'd a lot and I suppose that does get in your way. I think Sony AF gets out of the way more than just about anything I've ever used because they mostly just work and don't need to be fought with. Fuji X100s and f definately got in my way.

I had the X100v and even that was slow and clunky to use. Same as Sony RX1m2 I had.
The canon G1xiii was probably the best of the bunch (largeish sensor compact i mean). It had one of the earlier iterations of canon's dual pixel AF and of course it's not to today's standards. But overall it was the nicest one to use.

Yep sometimes the itch needs to be scratched ;)

I've never truly understood the "fun to use" vs "work tool" statements, whilst buttons etc might be in a different place cameras all work pretty much the same for me. I've enjoyed most cameras I've used but I wouldn't say one's been more fun that the other necessarily. Some have been easier to use, mostly due to button placement and/or customisation, and of course some of the older cameras are painfully slow compared to what we're used to now, I've had recent experience of this with the RX1R II.

I've used a few generations of the X100 now and whilst they look cool I wouldn't say they're more fun to use, they're just the same in a different form factor. All this being said, I do appreciate I'm in the minority as a large number of people find one camera more fun to use than another (y)

This is much more how I an too. A camera is chosen for what it does and how it does it with the potential end image in mind.

I pick them based on features, size, price, lens choice. Image quality these days I find much of muchness I don't think I could tell a photo taken from a Sony A9 Vs a Canon something or other.
Size is really high on my list, the C range was a game changer for me.

Yup.

I like camera to get out of the way and neither add to or detract from the picture. Its role is just to allow me to take the picture and to do so relatively quickly but a lens can be chosen to be either transparent or show itself in the final picture.

We went to the Temple of Truth yesterday. It's a wonderful and detailed temple made from wood and without nails. It's an ongoing thing with people carving additions on site. It really is a wonderful thing. I should have taken my GX80 and 14mm as the Sony 40mm was too long as there's no chance to back up when you arrive at the temple. I suppose I'm talking myself into buying a second A7cII I could mount either my 28mm f2 or 24mm f2.8 on as my A7III and 28 or 24mm is waaaay too big :D

I seem to be really struggling with editing lately though!! Just can't seem to get it what I'm happy with and [more importantly] consistent! Not sure what's going on tbh
That's surprising, your processing is usually great  :$ Nothing wrong with the recent post imo.

Thank you. I know too...!

I popped over to the Brecon's a few days ago and some woodland a few weeks ago, plus that above morning, and what works on one doesn't work on another. Which is frustrating because a year or so ago (when I was getting consistent comments about my editing) I seem to remember using one preset 98% of the time! And it just seemed to 'work' ......

Maybe I'm just over thinking it or something. Which is making me indecisive maybe...

Maybe the Fuji and film stuff has got me out of editing too much, so I can't be bothered to put the individual effort into the individual Sony files..?

I can’t help I’m afraid, I’m always messing with editing. My only advice is don’t go down the rabbit hole ;)

Less is more when editing for me. I find it out looks edited I don't like it.

I'm not really enjoying or feeling satisfied with my editing these days. I think it's partly the changes in lightroom, with the behaviour of some tonal tools like highlight and shadows slides having changed, for example. Editing jas changed from being a normal part of image creation to a chore.

Well, at least I'm not on my own with it :ROFLMAO: (y)

I think I’ve found the “holy grail” and then weeks later I find something I don’t like about it.

It also goes without saying different scenes look better with different editing, trouble is I’ve never been set on my editing for one scene let alone all the different ones :headbang: :ROFLMAO:

Tastes also change, I look back at some of my older shots and think there’s far too much contrast.

I think everyone goes through different stages of what they like in terms of editing style. For me it is green's that are the main culprit. Have always preferred very muted green's as I live in one of the greenest places on earth and for photography it can be over whelming.

For many years I have had an editing style I like but styles, expectations of what people want change, and my own preferences have changed and I have recently switched to what to me looks like a very obviously different editing style with truer to life green's and a few other tweaks, off course my missus can't see a difference but what are you going to do.

It can be a bit of a conundrum as people book us based on what they see, so it's important to be consistent, so I will have to gradually phase in my new editing style.

I've always gone mostly true to life, but I like more of a film look than digital look. The trouble is most film looks have some sort of cross process so of course aren't true to life

Viltrox 2x TC

Wonder if it works with 3rd party lenses though....
Yes, the list of lenses it's compatible with is the most important things that's missing (along with real world tests to see what it's image quality is like) - since it claims to support 120fps, that suggests Sony are fully on-board with it, so do wonder what's the catch?
