The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Are you brave enough to update? Lol
It's just big fixes so I'm in no rush to update (y)

Milky Way at that Engine House on Exmoor.

I took single frames with the X100f too. I know they won't compare, but it'll be interesting to see how they compare.
Lovely shot, nice how you got the trees sloping towards the engine house :) , F2 just to get a bit more DOF and did you put a light in the house or PP?
Cheers

I think I'm going to give up, I've just created this on chatGPT and it's better than anything I've shot  :ROFLMAO:

(looks soft on here but it's not on my computer)

It is getting scarily good this Ai s***

It really is. Not just in terms of generating images either. Pretty much every wedding photographer now uses A.I for:

Creating posts on social media, Instagram captions etc.
Writing blog posts
Creating copy for paid adverts
Email responses
Responses to social media messages
Culling images
Editing images and re-touching

My youngest was recently doing some work experience in the marketing department for a company that makes make-up and all the stuff that goes along with all of that. They use A.I for pretty much everything, they aren't allowed to reply to customer emails without using A.I, this company is well known for videos on TikTok etc. Every single video including the live videos have a script generated by A.I that they have to stick too, they even have someone of the live videos whose job it is to copy and paste questions on the lives into Chat GPT to generate responses.

Would imagine it's heavily embedded into most businesses now.

Although it is still only as good as the questions you ask it to do. See a lot with wedding photographers were they haven't provided enough detail and just asked to generate a caption or an advert and it spits out the same answer so multiple photographers are using the same thing.

Has anyone come across a good comparison blog or video between the 85mm GM2 and Siggy DG DN? I’ve only found the Dustin Abbott one but it’s a bit flawed when it comes to bokeh as he doesn’t take into account the difference in FOV.

Toby. We all know you can overthink things. Is the Siggy not doing it for ?
From your own admission you don’t make a lot use from 85mm

Just a curiosity thing Trev  I used the Siggy yesterday for the first time in ages and I noticed the different colours compared to the 50mm GM and 35mm GM so I was curious how the GM2 compared to the Siggy.

I doubt very much I could be swayed to buy the GM2 for the reasons you say, but I'm just curious ;)

Just when I noticed a freshly pressed, pristine white Lab coat being slid from the hanger…

Definitely been on this morning, took screen shots of the Dustin Abbot pics and a simple white balance evened up the colour difference between the GM2 and DG DN ;)

In that video I was surprised how much better the microcontrast is on the GM2 though, as shown at 17:32, definitely gives more detail and gives it more pop/3D effect.

More Pop!! You’re doomed..get saving.

This is interesting. Dual Bokeh? What will they think of next?

It's available in Sony mount.

It says unique but I'm pretty sure there's an old nikon lens that allows you to control bokeh

Maybe but they could just keep piling on the caveats. First duel bokeh T35mm f2.1 cini lens designed on a Thursday afternoon whilst drinking a can of Dr Pepper in your underpants?

Lol. Yeah, maybe it's the first cine lens with this (y)

These are the Nikon lenses, I nearly bought the 105mm a while back

You are looking for an excuse to buy a new shiny toy.

50GM and the 35GM have very different tones as the does the 85GMII. Yeah they are all different from the Siggy but there is big differences between the others as well.

I dislike the Siggy tones personally and maybe the 85 GMII tones would suit you better but they ain’t gonna match the others and by all accounts they aren’t as nice as the O.G G.M.

I’m not seriously contemplating one, just interested. From the side by sides I’ve seen the GM2 looks a lot better than the GM overall, I’ve not seen any significant difference in tones but I’ve only looked at a handful of reviews.

The only lens I really want is the 300mm f2.8 but that’s a pipe dream ;)

Copied over from Reddit, seems they’re using an A75 for their testing along with other bodies for the new Viltrox 35 1.2.

Do you often put cans of drink in your underpants? ;)

One last one. Sony A7III and Sony 24mm f2.8.

She's proudly holding two Oreo Ice cream sandwiches. They were lovely. £3 each though.

On the A7III. It is a step up from the A7 in both image quality and abilities the main ability for me being able to lock onto a face or even an eye at a small size in the frame at which the A7 would have long since given up. I still prefer the handling and controls of the A7 though but that's hardly surprising as I've had it so long.

I find it hard to believe anyone can prefer the handling of the OG A7 over pretty much any gripped camera ;) :p

I think it's the AF that's the main 'upgrade' for me for the A7 > A7Riii - there are several other things that I also enjoy, but the AF accuracy is the biggie!

Looks a nice place Alan :) And nice weather too.

The GMII is a better lens especially in terms of A.F performance but it lacks the character of the older lens and tones aren't as nice but that comes with all the inbuilt corrections and the different types of coatings all new lenses have now.

I regret ditching the older GM for the Sigma which I have never really been happy with although A.F is better, I hardly ever use it any way though so not a big deal.

I'm not seeing this from the samples, I prefer the GM2 every single time but obviously it's a subjective thing (y)

One thing that strikes me about the latest Sony lenses I've bought is that they're very good across the frame and may lack any significant weaknesses. They can have their own look, colour and rendering wise but other than that there's really nothing to look at. I wont say "criticise" although you can do that with older lenses and some newer ones but I think there is less obvious character to look at with pictures taken with good modern lenses.

With old lenses and even with modern Voigtlanders there are very often and particularly at wider apertures things which stand out and make it possible to identify what lens a picture was taken with. The way the sharpness falls off away from the central area, the performance towards the edges and into the corners, the bokeh, colour, contrast, flare and all the rest. With good modern lenses I'm not sure that's quite so easy or even if it's possible at all apart from at the widest apertures and with subjects and scenes which will show what character they have. With some pictures if I didn't know what lens I'd used I might get the focal length about right by looking at perspective and rendering but other than that I'd struggle and getting the focal length about right when looking at other peoples pictures is at best probably all I could manage, I probably wouldn't know what lens was used.

I suppose it depends what we want. If we want lenses which can be pretty transparent and anonymous then we're in luck but if we want to look at a picture and see more obvious fingerprints of the kit used then good modern lenses might not give us that.

Subjective yes, but you are the first person I have seen say that. :ROFLMAO:
I have just found a review that shows the OG to have softer bokeh, however like the Dustin Abbott one the framing isn’t the same with the GMII having a wider FOV so it’d be nice to see a comparison with the exact same framing to see if the bokeh is still softer on the OG.

I think this depends on the lens. Lenses like the Sony 50mm f1.2GM, 35mm GM, Nikon 58mm f1.4 etc certainly do have character and (imo) render beautifully. I personally find a number of Sigma lenses 'too clinical' but then there are some such as the 85mm f1.4 EX which have nice character.

I don't know enough about lenses to identify whether a shot was taken with a particular lens, especially considering most will have had various forms of processing applied to them.

Not long to wait to see if he's right on this one...
