Odly I can't find the reveiws where it showed the bokeh of the GM II not being as soft or nice as the Sigma Link?

Ahh I've found one of them, it's here from about 16:32 onwards, the grass in particular. However, after reviewing it again there is a small difference in the framing with the Sony being ever so slightly wider/not as close which could well account for the bokeh not looking as soft. I've seen in a few videos now the GM framing is wider than the Sigma, it would be intersting to compare the bokeh when framed identical

It wasn't that one but the GM II looks horrible here, surely these two images couldn't have ben focused on the same thing, I can't see that the GM II bokeh is that bad in comparison.

Edit: actually you can see it's been frame completely differently, completely pointlenss comparison

Unless off course it isn’t pointless and the reviewer is getting a kick back from Sigma which would hardly be a surprise

He doesn’t review the Sigma, that’s the GM vs GM II (y)

It makes me laugh when people champion certain lenses over others. If you can afford it and justify having it, then buy it. Let others enjoy what they use. We each have different tastes.

I'm not sure anyone is "championing" any lenses, just having an open discussion (y)

Anybody wanna be the Guinea pig for this?

I've not done the previous A7iv update yet... :)

Anyone using the Viltrox 33mm f1.4 on APS-c or full frame? Curious to know what it’s like?

I’m Sony through and through. From A100 back in 2006 through A700, A900, A77, A99, A7iii and where I am today on 2x A9. I’m now toying with an upgrade. I’m weighing up the two below, and calling out main benefits for me, but undecided…

A1 - dramatically improved AF vs my A9, greater ability to crop which is exciting for wildlife, works with helicon remote, and lower base ISO
A9iii - pre-buffer is super exciting for birds and insects, even better AF than A1, and similar file sizes to what I’m used to

So which would you choose in these scenarios? Where does your choose flip?
A1 vs A9iii + £1000
A1 vs A9iii (same price)
A1 + £1000 vs A9iii
A1 + £2000 vs A9iii

In no scenario I'd get the A9iii. Simply isn't a "do-it-all" body for me.
At the same time I'd have never bought the A9 too. So may be you'll be fine with A9iii.

The large file size might be a non-issue. At least on A7RV i can set it to record smaller downsampled RAW. A1 might have the same option. But A9 certainly can't record more pixels.

Tbh if it weren't for the lenses would have swapped to canon r5ii by now. Really disappointing Sony still doesn't have a R5ii/Z8 competitor.

I'm not sure this is clear.

The rumor guy says a new FF camera is coming at the end of November. I wonder what it'll be?

Who doesn't have enough cameras?

I have been using my A9’s for years. Hated the idea of the A1 and it’s ridiculous file sizes after having the A7RIV and waited for ages to find something that suited me better.

Turns out that was the A9III which is far and away the best Sony body I have used. If you like your A9 you will absolutely love the A9III. It isn’t just the speed and unbelievable a.f, files are absolutely gorgeous. Colours are outrageously good, noise performance is better than any other Sony body I have used and the ergonomics are the best of any Sony body to date.

What you use your gear will be different from me though.

For me this will depend on whether you want a high res body or not. Unlike Tommy the A1 would be my choice, I'm used to the large file sizes and I've not noticed any significant speed difference in terms of workflow, but I guess that will depend on your computer etc.

The A9III is a very compelling camera, but for me it's just not as much of an all rounder as the A1. I understand as a wedding tog the A9III may be more suitable, but I shoot landscapes, wildlife, portraits, sport, motorsport etc etc and the A1 is the camera to have for me. The base ISO and DR not only mean it's great for landscapes but also for slow shutter motorsports needing less use of ND filters. I've no use for 120fps (I very rarely use the 30fps on the A1, preferring 20fps) and I've never needed or wanted pre-capture. The ability to crop for wildlife and motorsports is a big advantage though.

The only thing I'd want from the A9III is the subject recognition, I've recently bought the A7RV and the subject recognition is noticeably better than the A1 and with the A9III being newer I'd expect it to be better again.

If you're in no rush and have an endless budget you could always wait for the next Sony announcement, it's rumoured to be the A1 II and if so it will have the latest subject recognition and will be the perfect camera imo. I did say that about the A1 though until I've used a camera with the latest subject recognition. When the price comes down (12-18 months after release) I will be upgrading to the A1 II, it'll just be a question of whether the A1 will go or the A7RV.

Likely the A1 II, but it's all guesswork until it's announced. I'm not even 100% convinced there'll even be an announcement, SAR has become very hit and miss.

Praise indeed. I can't justify the price even for a luxury buy but thinking about it I don't know why as I seem willing to spend on other things.

Good luck to you and those who have one and I see that they're available used.

So I found an A1 at a great price with a cf express tough and bit the bullet. If prices were at parity, I think I would’ve gone for the A9iii but nothing anywhere near price I was looking to pay so that will have to wait.

Not had a proper chance to put it through its paces, but the hunters super moon was a willing subject last night. The APSC mode along with my 200-600 and 1.4tc was incredible. I’d always questioned the value of that mode given it’s effectively just a crop, but gives so much in being able to manually focus.

That's a nice moon picture Simon. I've never been able to get a moon picture I'm happy with. I took a few last night with my Panasonic GX9 and 100-400mm but I haven't copied them to my pc and processed them yet. My fingers will be crossed but I'm prepared for another disappointment :D

Nice, did you try the pixel shift multishoot? I was hoping to try it now that Sony imaging edge can process images with slight movement in them but the skies have not been my friend.

In exactly the same boat here with my 500/8 reflex. Don’t have high hopes as I only spotted the full moon putting my son to bed, so in between stories setup a tripod and snapped a few frames out an open window, yearning once again for a geared head but I need to save money for a bit.

Sony relevant so if I have a good one I might share here.

I tend not to dabble in anything but my one raw edition of choice - captureone. So anything that needs another piece of software beforehand, I tend to avoid. I presume pixel shift and imaging edge process ends up with a jpeg or a ludicrously large tiff?

Maybe I should try it, though I have to say, the moon doesn’t half move fast at this focal length!

I’d imagine the file would be huge yeah.

Not brilliant, but not terrible. I'll try and do better one day, when it's not bedtime and away from so much light pollution...

Just been out to photograph the moon and we have cloud cover again

Been to photograph Sheffield FC today, first time doing footy, or any kind of sport like this really, but I enjoyed it. I was really surprised how often the A1 focussed on the background though, probably happened 5 or 6 times :(

I went out for the Comet again, moon was rising over the industrial Avonmouth though which looked nice. Low & orange for a while.

The 28mm pancake is apparently selling well...

I can't see the appeal in a lens with no manual focus option. I use MF quite a bit for when AF is likely to struggle or not work at all or will grab the wrong point. Good luck to those who go for this lens but I wouldn't have it for free as when it let me down and it would at some point I want to throw it against a wall.

I only use spot focus, so don't give the camera a chance to choose the wrong subject.
