The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Thanks all.

It may seem odd posting such personal stuff here but I've looked after her pretty much 24/7 for a long time and this forum has been a bit of a life line with me being tied to the house so much.

Sadly mam passed away a couple of hours ago with me stroking her hair and kissing her. I don't know how conscious she was on Sunday and this morning but on Saturday afternoon when I told her I loved her she answered saying that she loved me. Hopefully she knew we were there and got some comfort. I have convinced myself that she knew I was holding her hand, stroking her hair and kissing her.

On her 94th birthday on 27th July, about to enjoy fish and chips.

Mam, you were and are loved and we will see each other again we we too "go home."

I'm glad you can share this with the forum and that you've found some help here, it makes a big difference that you could be with her up to the end. My Dad passed away overnight on Saturday morning in hospital but I hadn't been able to see him on the Thursday or Friday as I had a terrible cold and didn't want to risk infecting him or anyone else in the hospital. It's a small thing and we rarely had meaningful conversations but it plays on your mind, these actions at the end do matter.

Photography has always helped me deal with loss and hope it can also help you a bit through such a difficult time.
Really sorry to hear this, you both have my sincerest condolences

I see there are lots of lenses in the pipeline.

On the rumor site they have specs for a Viltrox 20mm f2.8, you can now preorder the Tamron 17-50mm and TTArtisan are launching 35 and 55mm f1.8 AF lenses.

A TTArtisan 50mm f1.8 could potentially have interested me as I've never got over the fact that my Sony 55mm f1.8 is 55mm but as TTArtisan have also gone for 55mm that's that. Still, someone could be interested in a TTartisan 55mm f1.8 is they lack my ocd :D

The 17-50mm's definitely on my radar.

Just back from a trip to Wales. Stayed in a cottage in the middle of nowhere, stunning surroundings. Unfortunately 98% of the time it was mizzle, rain, high winds, torrential rain or a combo of all of them. One day we nearly didn't get back to the cottage due to floods but we managed to find an old track that detoured round. Due to this I didn't get the chance to try astro, but in the brief nice/dry spells I've come back with some photos I'm happy with.

Here's a selection, the full album can be found here https://flic.kr/s/aHBqjAVC6s

Number 3, there's something about it and I'm not sure if it's the light, the processing or something else - I can't quite put my finger on it, but there's just something about it. In a good way that is.

Thanks, maybe the mood of it as it was pretty misty and murky?

Quick question....
on my new to me Sony A7 , you can release the shutter when focus not acquired , is it me just being too twitchy on the shutter release or is there a way to set focus priority as a release mechanism like on some of my other mirrorless cameras?

I can't see anything.

I have a manual lens mounted and I have release without lens enabled, maybe that could be something to do with it but it's a long shot. Maybe see if it is set and if it is disable it and see if that makes a difference? It in the gear menu which is second from the left and is top of page 3. Good luck.

I will try that and see
maybe I’ve got a duff 28-70
will look for a reasonably priced MF lens

Having looked at the online manual it doesn’t appear it has a setting for focus priority, the only shutter release options are to enable/disable shutter lens when no lens is attached. Seems an odd omission.

That’s what I thought, I will persevere and hopefully get used to it

Just in case anyone is interested there's a review of the TTArtisan 500mm f6.3 here...

Looking at the pictures in that review I think this could be a decent cheap option if you know what you're getting and what the limitations and difficulties in use may be.

The sample pictures certainly look good to me but one thing to think about is that "better" results may be possible with shorter lenses and cropping if you're final output size is achievable after cropping and you are able and willing to crop.

Looks wonderful. Where was the cottage? (presumably not the one in image 3...)

It was lovely, but no that was in the field behind. The cottage is in the album on Flickr, image A1_9883

Many thanks. I really meat 'where' was it geographically. It looks just the sort of place I and Mrs Bodian would love to stay!

Cheers.

I like the waterfalls - especially the small one.

Thanks, sorry I misunderstood. It was just outside of Trefriw on the south side of Llyn Crafnant. I think the cottage is called Maes Maws, or something very similar.

Brilliant - found it. Looks excellent.
It is lovely, and they provide loads of stuff like tea, coffee etc which you don't always get when staying in cottages like this. The lane to it is not for anxious drivers though, it takes around 15 minutes from Trefriw to the cottage and it's a single track road with passing places, although it's still tricky to pass. It's very narrow in places to the point where the foliage was brushing down both sides of my car (X5). Also, there's lot of hidden rocks on the road side, one of which decided to jump out and gouge my alloy :headbang:

The Nikon ZF looks sort of nice.
The black looks nice, the other colours look tacky as hell. I love these retro designs though, shame it's not in silver/black. The issue with these cameras is that they're form over function for me. I need a decent grip and these types of cameras don't have that so they're only really good to use with small primes.

I had the same thought about the lack of grip and really can't imagine using a camera that size even with small primes without a grip, it is a pretty camera and I'd have considered it if it was a smaller RX1r fixed lens camera.

I don't know how many lenses with an aperture ring Nikon have but the couple of reviews I've seen of the ZF seem to feature a 40mm (I think) AF lens with retro styling but no aperture ring. Also that puny f display on the top irritates me as I think they could have done something better.

Anyway, I'm fully invested in Sony so although I will look I wont buy :D

Not on my radar, as lovely as it may look it’s not practical and I’m happy with Sony (y)

Looks like the Tamron 17-50mm f4 has an internal zoom

I’m interested in buying this lens - it covers the range I use a lot.
Not sure it‘s the break through lens Tamron are claiming though - Canon had the 17-40L F4 in 2003, which was compact, had internal zoom, weather sealed, close focussing and was cheap.

I didn’t realise they were touting it as a breakthrough lens, but either way it’s a very useful focal length and I really don’t understand why it’s not been done before and why 24mm has been the standard as the wide angle for a standard zoom.

I’ll not be buying it at launch though, I’ll wait for the price to drop.

I’m not reading that the same as you tbh, just the usual flannel you get with every promotion of a product these days ;)

The canon doesn't hold up very well by today's standards especially on 24mp+ sensors.

Don't know if tamron does but I imagine it'll still be lot better than the canon.

The Canon 17-40mm wasn't even considered all that hot even back when I had Canon DSLR's. I'd be surprised if a modern lens struggled to beat it.

For sure - the Canon 17-40 is 20 years old, so of course modern lenses will have evolved to be sharper.
My point - this focal range was available two decades ago and 20 years of development has added 10mm and improved sharpness, which you would expect as tech improves.
Tamron pushing it as the 'worlds first' :p

Well it wasn’t available 20 years ago, it was 10mm shorter, by that logic Sony’s 20-70mm focal range has been around for decades too :) :p
