The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

if the specs here are true... colour me impressed

especially the 0.5x magnification through zoom range plus TC compatibility. With 2x TC you can get 1:1 macro.

Plus its smaller and wee bit lighter.

I will believe it when I sees it :p
Well it's officially released, time will tell if it's good at Macro or not, I've never been happy with 2x TC's but for close up it might be OK.

exactly for closeup+stopped down to f/11-16, I think it will work fine.

seems like a very interesting lens. I am really tempted.... will keep a close eye out for the usual reviews.
Could replace my 70-300mm with this....

on separate note, disappointed with A6700

Does look a great lens on paper, I'm not sure I could live with f4 over f2.8 though, but the close up use would be tempting.

I've not looked at the A6700, not a camera that I'm in the slightest bit interested in.

At least it has a front dial.

I used my G100 today and I just do not like using the back wheel for settings. I find it awkward to use and too easy to jog. I'm not interested in this latest A6700 but I think adding a second top of camera control is a good move. I hope they do this with the A7cII too. I still wont buy one as there are too many issues with the original and I doubt very much they'll be fixed with the II.

since you already have the f2.8 and happy with it, not sure I'd swap just for the semi-macro.
for me I am looking for a complimentary lens for my travel setup. I have the 20-70mm and this makes sense as it has same filter size plus constant f4 all the way to 200mm.
I am not too keen on the near 800g weight though.... plus needing to carry TCs to reach 300mm range.

Well they missed a trick with the A6700, so disappointing. Goes to show that they've really abandoned APS-C for photography and it will be used for lower end vlogging/all-round bodies.

I had envisioned an APS-C body with stacked sensor, central EVF and updated focus algorithms. Meh

I thought the weight was good for a lens of this type.

The A6700 is under £1.5k with all the improvements in A7RV.
It's missing dual card slots and also wish it had 30+ mp :(

They have fixed it's the lack of forefinger dial and it has UHS-ii card slot.

But the frame rate is still rubbish :(

I really don't think they've done 'enough'. Even Fujifilm have stacked sensor APS-C body, the X-H2s makes this 6700 look like a toy.

well its also a £1000 more but I agree, they haven't done enough.
Even canon R7 seems a better prospect at £100 more.

its still stuck at 1/4000s max shutter speed!

honestly they are really just milking their old customer base I think. This is a really rubbish upgrade imo.

real shame because they have some really nice lenses for APS-C now that even Fuji and Canon don't have :(

Whatever happened to Sony shaking the market up with amazing new cameras?

I've read that the A6xxx series sells well so I suppose if that's true they'll only try harder when it doesn't.

I was briefly tempted in the Nex days but there's nothing in the series now that'd tempt me to ditch MFT for Sony APS-C even though my existing FF lenses would fit.

Perhaps it’s not possible without a huge price hike, I guess the A6xxx is priced for a specific market? Start sticking stacked sensors, fancy EVFs, high frame rates etc and the price soon marches up to £3k.

R7 is only £100 more isn't it?
has dual card slots, 32mp sensor (albeit slower readout), 15fps mech shutter, 1/8000s shutter etc. feels more like top end APS-C.

but they are certainly making some fantastic lenses.

I don’t know, I don’t really follow the APS-C market.

I am off to RIAT this weekend, with A9 and Sigma 100-400 so just a quick sanity check on potential settings.
Forecast is showery throughout the day.

A9 AF-C / Wide / 10 fps
Auto - ISO - Max 12800
Min Shutter Speed 1/2000
A-Priority - F8

Not sure on the metering to leave it to Multi or Spot.

Sigma Lens
Stabiliser - Off

Any suggestions ?

Normally have the AF-on button track with a centre medium or large spot. I set the AEL button to quickly override that to track with wide.
That way I can use either depending on the situation.

good luck and have fun

I normally have mine set to single point AF-C tracking but could use zone.

You can't use A priority and then set min shutter to 1/2000, the whole point of A priority is that it's aperture priority and the shutter will be what it will be. I'd personally set it to manual, , 1/1000 (slower for prop planes and helicopters) and wide open (if your lens is sharp wide open). Assuming light is consistent I'd use manual ISO to keep exposures consistent, and set it to what looks right. However you could use Auto ISO and adjust exp comp and needed for shooting against the bright sky.

I'd probably shoot faster than 10fps and shoot in small bursts. Stabiliser on.

This is what I do as well (y)

AF-C
Back Button Focus
Set SS and AV in Manual
Adjust exposure with the rear wheel set to ISO

Sunday is the better day for RIAT weather wise, as a local it’s only a 20 minute drive away. I cannot see it raining all day just the odd shower

Just checked on camera and it’s set in exposure 1 / iso settings menus

I don't understand anyone setting a max ISO other than the max available. I'd much rather take the picture than not because the ISO is too high. You can always delete a picture if it isn't useable but don't take it and you haven't got it to evaluate.

l-mount alliance is getting bigger again

Really interesting now.... soon they'll have all the samyang lenses available too I guess.

Makes panasonic bodies very compelling.

We went to Whitby today. The light seemed to be very harsh.

A7 and Pergear 35mm f1.4.

Boats. Coming and going.

DSC02804.jpg

We nearly had 3 crashes, if I'd been going faster or not anticipated what was possible maybe we would have had one... some people were just driving like they didn't care and we were in my Evoque which is hardly easy to miss, if you look.

I'm surprised that A9 and 50mm f1.2 in the for sale section hasn't been snapped up, yet :D
