The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

My A7 will be 10 years old next year so I suppose the chances of a failure are increasing plus whatever it's covered with is bubbling. Nothing has gone sticky though, my Panasonic G1 went sticky. If and when it does fail I suppose an A7III is the obvious replacement.

I can't remember when I last got my MX5 out. It's due and MoT and a service soon so I will be out in it.

I MOT'd the Escort at the end of September. Drove it to Wiltshire to visit her daughter & family the weekend after. Not seen it since  :ROFLMAO:

I've got a mate who pays over £600 a month to drive 4 miles each way to work in a V8 F-Pace Jag. My tax and insurance and MOT is less than £600 a year.....

I like having. “nice car” but I have never understood people who will go without in other areas of their lives so that they can cover their “car payments”.

Maybe I am just a bit old school. I have never had a car on finance even though financially at times it would have made sense with some of them due to depreciation etc.

My wee bro has lots of friends who are paying between £800-£1200 just on car finance so that they can potter about in decent cars and that’s before insurance etc. which is much more expensive in N.I. Sure if they have that money spare every month that is grand but many of them don’t.

I have never bought a car on finance, every car I have ever bought has been paid in full and that has meant at times having cars that fitted my budget at the time. About a year and a bit ago I bought a car and paid by bank transfer the guy thought I was taking the p***, it wasn’t even that expensive a car, was just under 30k. Have had the same thing a couple of times, they really don’t seem to like you paying outright, I guess they get some sort of commission from the finance company.

I do not even have a credit card. I used to but never really used it so didn’t see the point. We seem to live in a debt driven society but for me if I don’t have the cash to buy something I just don’t buy it.

I get it of course people like to have nice things and don’t like to wait for it. Being self employed though I like to keep monthly payments to a minimum.

I've never bought on finance I don't think - well, aside from CC purchases which are paid off monthly. Certainly not bought a car on finance. But then again, £3.5k for the Focus is the most I've spent on a car! :ROFLMAO: Which is pretty strange I guess for someone who (was) so much into the car scene for many years! Aside from 'family' cars when I was married, I've only actually bought 3 cars for myself..... My first car was a blue Mk1 Escort in '93, second car was the Escort I still have now & then the Focus. Before the Focus I took over the SEAT Toledo after buying myself an engine for the Escort & a ... Vauxhall 7 seater for the wife at the time..... out of some redundancy money. Had some early Fiestas, Orion 1600i Ghia, XR3i, VW Golf as joint/family cars which I used to drive 50/50 but they were never in my name as such.

Zafira!! :$ Vauxhall Zafira!

Up until recently you could actually get better deals through finance than cash, for example I got a £12k cash contribution on finance which saved me money over paying cash. Also some buy through finance to reduce tax.

I tend to go with whatever saves me money in the long run. That being said cars are money pits.

I view cars as a financial write-off. £10K for 6-8 years is tolerable, and if one can get something back at the end then that's a bonus. I usually aim for 2-3 year old cars that have depreciated already somewhat, although my present car - Skoda Karoq - was £17K at 1 year old, which seemed tolerable for the age even though it was quite a lot more than I'd prefer to pay. £30K for a car? No, that's too much like real money to me, and come pension time could well be the equivalent of 18months income. We'll have to replace the wife's mini soon. :p

I'm a big fan of cars but I can't justify spending money on them for how much I use mine so currently have a plush 12 year old Mazda 6 which I've had for nearly ten years, very little goes wrong with it and it's very reliable. It's tempting to get something a bit newer and fancier but I drive so little it's quite a bit of money for me compared to what I can spend on cameras, drones, tech or bikes which I'll get more use out of.

I really want to get the A9 to the Ring at some point as I had it at a track day this year and it was fantastic although these things always leave me wanting to buy a faster car.

Never had car on finance either and it's nice to have residual at the end though when I come to sell. I paid £10,500 for my C30, it's my 6th or 7th year now of ownership, I think it's still worth at least half to 2/3rd of what I paid for it. I know at the peak of the pandemic I've seen dealers selling the same car for £10k and mine have lower miles than that one. Cars are an ongoing expense though, so the longer I keep it, the cheaper it will get.

As for credit card, they are great if you know how to work it to your advantage. That mean always settle the bill, don't pay interest, but then get miles and points or cashback and some get you discounts and airport lounge access, free travel insurance or purchase insurance, better consumer purchase protection over debit cards, free hotel upgrades, car rental upgrade etc etc.

The most exciting car I've owned was the Elise, the fastest across country was the Elan SE, the most disappointing was an SLK 230, the most comfortable for long slogs was the 4ltr Jag S and everything else is somewhere in between but MX5's deserve a special mention as they are I think a really good fun but practical car. At the moment I'm surprised how much I like the Evoque, it's surprising as it's so different to anything else I've had. I've never used finance either but as above I believe it does sometimes get you a better deal.

Money wise I did well out the computer industry and that enabled the cars and other toys, back then I was a total workaholic. I'm not sure I'd recommend that lifestyle as you do miss out on life but on the plus side it did let me give up work at 49 and I would recommend that.

I'll try and offload some of my not getting used gear in the new year and then I might go further than putting an A7III in my basket but I think I'd like to see what they do with the A7cII first.

Don't get me wrong I get all the advantages of financing or leasing things like cars, my accountant is always harping on about it. I also understand that a lot of people can make good advantage of using credit cards and loans etc. For example at my last meeting with my accountant went through a whole presentation of how I could lease an electric car and could actually make money because of all the incentives that are currently running.

It has just never really been a route I have went down myself probably stems from the way my parents did things. To be fair at times not financing things has worked to my advantage as well. During the pandemic when I wasn't able to work for some time because I have always kept my monthly bills to an absolute minimum I was able to get by okay without having to sacrifice too much. I know many other self employed people who lost their homes, had to sell or give their cars back to the finance companies that owned them which greatly increased the stress they were under.

I have financed some things, donkeys years ago I bought a few electrical items on zero percent finance, but I never really felt comfortable with it. I haven't purchased anything using credit in maybe 12-15 years. I totally understand the reasons why some people can make it work for them, but its just something I have never been comfortable with and since going self employed it is something I have avoided all together. If things ever went completely tits up not having finance to worry about keeps my mind at ease. I did take out a bounce back loan when they were available as my accountant advised it, but I haven't spent a penny of the money, it has been sitting in an account I don't use ever since but I guess it's always there if I need it.

In terms of cars especially, I probably view cars slightly differently than others. I was lucky when I was young to be able to own quite a range of brand new cars but I haven't had a brand new car in a long time, I always buy used. I generally always have at least 2 cars one reasonably new car that I can rely on for work and at least one car that I just use for fun and with those I don't worry about it being reliable etc. so can buy much older vehicles to fill that need. At times I have been a bit silly and at one time owned 7 cars at the same time. :D I try to be a bit more sensible now.

In terms of the 30k car I bought a year and a bit ago, yeah I could have financed it or even leased a brand new one through my business and there would have been advantages to that for sure, The way I looked at it though was the 30k was set aside for buying a car. If I had of done finance or leasing that 30k would have probably been spent on other things I didn't really need. The cost of owning the car and depreciation etc I am good with.

As I mentioned above younger people can often make silly decisions about things like cars so that they can show of that Insta lifestyle. My wee bro has a mate that pays £1200 a month for his car plus insurance etc. Because of this he has to live with his mum and dad and is always skint. Even my wee bro's girlfriend is the same, she earns about 2k a month but nearly half of that is spent on car payments. It is always about the flash in their friend group. A year or so ago my wee bro offered to give her 20k to just buy a car, but she actually said that she would be too embarrassed to be seen by her friends driving around in a 20k car (incredible, I thought it was disgusting). It is different for my wee bro he owns a reasonably successful business and basically afford to buy any car he wants under 300-400k and in the last year alone he has had a range rover, 2 Lambos' and he just bought himself a G wagon after buying a C63 a couple of months ago. A few of his friends are in the same position and have high end cars a few McLaren's, Ferraris etc. They never keep their cars long enough to worry about losing too much in depreciation. I guess that makes it harder for the ones in their group who can't really afford to live that lifestyle so they try to fake it. My wee bro changes his cars every 6-8 months and always has at least 2, nobody earning normal wages can really keep up with that.

I could probably just about afford to lease a low end Lambo or a Ferrari or similar but it would kill me having to pay out so much money every month, I would just constantly be worrying about it. At the moment I have 3 cars although I have pretty much given one of those to my mum, she wouldn't accept it as a gift this time as I have given her the last 2 cars she has owned so while she has been driving around in it for about 6 months or so everything is still in my name. My missus also has her own car as well. We own them all outright. Even my wee bro owns his cars outright as well, I guess it is just the way we were brought up it was always drilled into us to only buy things when we can afford it and if we can't afford it, to just wait until we could and that goes for pretty much everything.

I dislike paying monthly instalments for anything, obviously some things I do like our mobile phones and subscriptions to various things but given the option I will always choose a pay upfront method if it is available.

I don't mind financing as I'm good with budgeting and never go beyond my means, or close to it, however it's got to be worth it/financially better.

The used car market has gone belly up though since the Financial Standards got involved last year and took away negotiable APR's. Instead of making it "fair for everyone" it just means everyone's having their pants down. For some of your more luxury marques such as BMW, Land Rover, Audi etc APR on used cars is 11.9-13.9% depending on the franchise group meaning that any finance cash incentives is going to be easily wiped out by the interest paid and then some. I doubt we'll ever get back to 4-5% that I used to pay, or see the odd 0% APR's (maybe you will on Citroen etc). Even 3rd party car finance companies are at 8.8% at the moment. Crazy.

The weather was better than predicted yesterday so we decided to go to the annual Matlock Bath Boxing Day Raft Race. They must be mad, air temp was only 2 degrees so god only knows how cold the water was

Same for me, it's cash or at least pay in full on day one every time for everything if at all possible.

When I left work I promised myself a really special car but the amount I was going to spend kept going down as I spotted other models. I started with the exotica in my sights and then a British exotic came alone and it was gorgeous and cheaper and then I thought that some Aston Martin or other was more car than I'd ever need then the Jag F Type was cheaper again and the amount I thought I'd spend just kept going down. Even now do I look at some cars and think why not? but the world is so anti car now and some the cars I've had had drawn road rage and abuse and vandalism and I really don't want the hassle so for all these reasons I doubt I'll ever get anything too attention grabbing now. I do like the Evoque and I might get a new one of those as they are everywhere so shouldn't attract too may idiots.

Actually, one thing that's stopped me buying exotica is I do think that on the narrow twisties a Lotus, MG or MX5 is much more fun than the exotic stuff which tends to be not really all that suitable to be chucked around an east Cleveland / North Yorkshire twisty.

Agree with a lot of that.

My wee bro got tortured when he had the Lambos, everywhere he went kids draping themselves over it for selfies etc.

They also aren’t practical at all so would always need another car available, they are also incredibly unreliable.

The only one I have on my want list and will likely go for at some some point is a Nissan GTR. They are reasonably reliable and more practical than the real suoercars. I wouldn’t expect to be getting one anytime soon though.

If you want a "flash" car best get one sooner rather than later as the world is on an anti car and anti enjoyment of driving path and I can't see things letting up.

Anti car people don’t bother me, I couldn’t care less what anyone else thinks.

Well, you have to care what people think, do and say as it can be costly and annoying and upsetting and even dangerous. I've had so many negative incidents of road rage, verbal abuse, spitting, stone throwing, vandalism, blocking, tail gating, brake testing and cutting up on the road. Plus at council and state level we have anti private car ownership rhetoric, needlessly reduced speed limits, OTT traffic calming measures, ever increasing taxes, phased traffic controls designed to increase congestion, reduced parking spaces, it can add up to an anti car environment sucking the fun out of car ownership and especially the ownership of anything a little out of the norm, like a sports car or SUV.

It's not what they think that's the problem....it's what they do

Yup. As above I've been spat at sworn at etc. and people have walked up to me in the street to tell me how Sh!t my car is. I'm not easily threatened or intimidated and I can usually win any base Anglo Saxon insult or cutting line throwing contest but when you have your GF/wife/family with you it can all get a bit... much... and the worst thing you can do is react. I once stopped the car in a cloud of brake smoke and chased someone who'd spat at me and another time I took off at warp speed to catch a biker who'd deliberately smashed a wing mirror off, I caught up to him on the A road (few things could out accelerate the car I had then) so he pulled off into town and I caught him in traffic, had my seat belt off and my hand on the door handle when he spotted me and took off through two sets of red lights to get away. Those incidents could have ended very badly and these days... I just can't be bothered with cars that attract too much attention as it's just not worth the hassle.

A drunk guy came out a pub years ago when I had a vauxhall viva and kicked the door. The car was my pride and joy at the time....
I was only 18 so suffice to say he would've woken up the next day with a pretty sore face....

I don't really have much interest in cars these days, a small 4 wheel drive which gets me around Dartmoor with these three in the back suffices.

What I am interested in however is this, has the problem with the mechanical shutter on the A7 III been sorted on the IV?

My first proper car was an ek9 civic type R in championship white.

Not overly keen on that particular shape or the newest one to be honest.

Had quite a few Honda’s over the years a few preludes and an Integra that I absolutely loved.

Lot of green eyed monsters in society, who don't like others having something nice. The worst are those who key cars just out of badness, well, maybe those who steal them are worse.

Like mentioned earlier, I also don't care what people think of what I choose to drive. I had a specific brief: petrol, estate, quick, AWD, supercharged and under £25k. Didn't leave much to choose from so I couldn't be very fussy and ended up in an AUDI, a brand I never really liked and still don't - but I do like the car.

It's the most I've ever spent on a car that I've owned and probably always will be because all things considered I'm actually in the car a tiny proportion of my life, so relatively speaking it is rather expensive.

I also think that most manufacturer warranties are far too short, considering the initial and ongoing cost. It's terrible when you read about people having an expensive four year old car, fully serviced, and the timing chain or tensioners have failed resulting in a new engine, but the manufacturer wash their hands of it. Terrible.

It’s a shame you’ve had experiences like this, very sorry to hear it. It shouldn’t be like this, we should be able to enjoy ourselves.

Fortunately I’ve never had anything like this, but then I’ve never had a particularly flash car. The most ‘eye catching’ have been a couple of Scoobies and M3’s but the worst I ever experienced was people wanting to race me from the lights, but always in good jest.

My brother has just had his Alfa nicked though :(

I’ve just seen a post saying that the A9 AF is faster than the A7IV as the sensor has a faster readout, but does the sensor readout really have anything to do with AF speed?

I’ve just seen a post saying that the A9 AF is faster than the A7IV as the sensor has a faster readout, but does the sensor readout really have anything to do with AF speed?

I’m just saw that too…

AI says

“The sensor readout can potentially have an impact on the speed of autofocus (AF) in a digital camera. The sensor readout refers to the process of transferring image data from the image sensor to the camera's memory buffer. This process occurs whenever a photograph is taken with a digital camera.

The speed of the sensor readout can affect the overall speed of the camera, including the speed at which it is able to focus on a subject. If the sensor readout is slow, it may take longer for the camera to process the image data and adjust the focus accordingly. This can result in slower AF performance.

However, there are many other factors that can also affect the AF speed of a camera, such as the speed and accuracy of the AF system itself, the lens being used, and the lighting conditions. So, while the sensor readout can be a factor, it is not the only factor that determines AF speed.”

Overall, I’d say I’d pick the A74, it might be slower but everything together it will even itself out and it will be more developed and smarter in picking out actual subjects. The A9 might be focused on something but is it something you are actually wanted to be in focus?

So I’d think you will get more keepers with A74.

I've got some plans for photos & video of mine but the weather's gotta sort itself out first :ROFLMAO:

I asked the AI direction which is faster. Slower FPS but it seems it can acquire focus faster.

“The Sony A9 is known for having fast autofocus, with a focus acquisition time of 0.05 seconds and a 20 fps continuous shooting speed with AF/AE tracking. The Sony A74 also has fast autofocus, but it may not be quite as fast as the A9. The A74 has a focus acquisition time of 0.02 seconds and a continuous shooting speed of up to 10 fps with AF/AE tracking.”

Does the A74 have blackout free shooting?

The 10 fps on the A74 is quite misleading marketing. To achieve this the criteria is;

CF Express A in slot 1
64GB or higher SDXC fast SD card (280/300mbs) on slot 2 using JPEG, 32GB versions aren’t fast enough to clear the buffer.
Use lossy compressed

In reality most people will only ever achieve 6fps

More info here;

We definitely get less keepers with the A7IV compared to the A9 it isn’t even close. Very disappointed in A7IV a.f performance tbh.

People seem a bit laid back in here and will talk about just about anything for a page or two before it inevitably gets back to cameras, even Fuji, Nikon and Canon get talked about.

Great car picture :D

Before we redecorated I had a load of my car pictures up in our bedroom. We took them down to redecorate and they never went back up as I got to like the minimalist look.

We've just had the other half's son & girlfriend move out (well, about 3 weeks ago but there's stuff plenty of stuff hanging around......) so eventually we are doing some extra stuff downstairs in the kitchen with the extra space plus the two upstairs rooms they had. The plan is some photos!! :ROFLMAO: I do want some multi aperture frames or whatever they are called. Two of them. One with 3 nights skies of Orion. One with 3 film star trails of the same location on the same night!

I was just thinking today of replacing some pictures which have hung in the hall for years but with what?

I normally sort my photos and file them in their respective folders quite quickly but I've got months worth to go through also with reprocessing old shots with new software I've rediscovered some I like that I'd forgotten about. I'll have to go through them and choose 2 or 3, I'll mount them in frames from ASDA :D

I did find some nice frames today & pretty well made for the price. They were 4 number 6x4 though. And I would prefer 3 number 7x5 I think - just that touch bigger.

I did buy my boy a 4 image frame for Christmas (2 vertical & 2 horizontal) simple to give him a good kick up the arse because I think some of his night sky stuff should be on his wall in his room!! (Or the house if his mum allows it :ROFLMAO: )

I used to use a framing shop, drop off the pictures and have them mounted and framed but I think the off the shelf ones are just as good, for me.

I was into cars for a long time but never really just buying a car more modding them and track days, sleeper cars are great fun showing up people in their expensive showroom cars with a Fiesta rusting away.

In order,

Ford Fiesta XR2 MK2 stripped out for the track.
Ford Escort RS Turbo S2, converted to EFI lots of mods and around 300bhp.
Ford Fiesta XR2, put a 2lt Zetec engine in it with motorbike carbs running around 240bhp in a car you could nearly pick up, probably the fastest car I've had not much beat it.
Mazda RX8 first car I owned and didn't do anything to it.
Audi A3, dullest, worst car I've ever owned.
Current car Ford Mondeo Mk5, 240bhp diesel, it's fast enough and it gets me everywhere in comfort. Also have a Mazda 3 which the wife drives it's pretty nice car to be honest better in everyway to the Audi A3 it replaced.

My money mostly goes on mountain bikes, and the house.
I did also used to be into shooting and had many air rifles but that's a sport that's been forced to die out no one wants you on their land anymore.
Finally cameras actually take up very little of my time and money but I do enjoy it.
