The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

This page says you can’t? Well one of us is wrong…

Please note that this offer can NOT be used in conjunction with the Save £250 offer.

You are right, missed that.

Not as good as I thought then.

It isn't clear on the mobile page that you can't have both.

Will fire you across my details, cheers.

You might as well as I'm down to very distant relatives now and as I'm named after an Irish family member you might be one of them.

If I don't spend every penny on old film era lenses in the meantime.

Please no trading here.
If you are wanting to give away your inheritance/fortune could you please put in the freebies forum so everyone can have a fair chance at it.

Also the snake is hanging around here, he won't be happy if you are trading here ;)

OK, I'll mostly just spend spend spend :D

This was taken on the beach I proposed on on the very day. So much for it being a work trip.

The beach is owned by the navy and you have to stop at a check point and politely ask if you can come in :D

Good old creaking A7 and 35mm f2.8.

And then return return return

Nupe. I only return stuff that's faulty.

This year I've bought a few cameras and a couple had to go back for sensor contamination (LX100, fixed lens so I couldn't clean it) or other faults plus I've bought some watches and one of those had to go back as it kept stopping. Most things that went back got replaced with identical or similar except the LX100 as I just gave up with that.

Oh, I also bought a car :D and will no doubt be buying another when and if Mrs WW passes her UK test.

That's a really nice shot, the bright colours and composition make it pop. Looks like it's straight out of a travel brochure!

Great photo of my newly adopted Mum :D

I'm glad you are enjoying it.
I have the same combo and it's brilliant for AF.
Is it the 200-600mm? I’m contemplating hiring one for my kingfisher experience next year. I have the 100-400mm with 1.4tc but being as this is likely to be a one off I’d like to have the best chance of getting the best shot I can, and I think f6.3 at 600mm could make enough of a difference over f8 at 560mm.

I’d love to hire the 600mm f4 but it’s crazy money.

You can literally point it at anything and it's there - amazing!!

In this country especially in the winter months I struggle for light.
Since you will be shooting action and you can't use flash your only option is to use higher shutter speeds.
It's not too bad during summer but still not ideal on overcast days.

F6.3 is already pretty dark IMO, f8 is a no go which is why I traded my 100-400mm+1.4x for 200-600mm when it came out

Yes, it is quite a bit darker. I did try taking it out on an overcast day and you start to lose the nice detail with higher ISO.

I use the 200-600 for wildlife and just push the iso up to 6400 on the A9ii and get good images.

It’ll be the end of March so maybe there’ll be some good light, I’ve shot ISO 100-200 and f8 with high shutter speed in the past but it is a risk.

The 100-400mm generally suits my needs better but I’m pretty sure I’m going to hire the 200-600mm for this, especially as I’ll likely be using a tripod a lot of the time so weight is less of an issue.

if you can rent a 400mm f2.8 (since you already have your own 1.4x), I'd recommend that.

Its been a while since I have photographed kingfishers, but they are probably the hardest to get close to and photograph. I hope the "experiance" has well positioned perches.

My last kingfisher shot from nearly 3 years ago

Still had my A7rIV back then. ISO1600 equiv, 1/400s, f6.3 on the 200-600mm, handheld.

Got to get back in the field again!

The 400mm f2.8 is as ludicrously expensive as the 600mm f4 to rent so it’s out of the question. Apparently the hide is about 10ft away from where the birds normally brood so hopefully I’ll not have to crop too much.

Proximity is certainly important but so is the background.
A lot of my shots are against a busy background which from a photograph point of view isn't great. In one place the water was super unclean which actually ruined the bokeh.
It important that they have got good perches for photography. If it's made for photographing in mind then they'll have thought about all that but just mentioning it so you are well prepped (y)

This is the experience (Birthday present from my wife), looking at the photos it does look like you can get some nice bokeh, although I know Steve shoots with the 600mm f4.

Yeah seems really well organised. All sold out too and only 3 people per booking. He seems to prioritise quality over quantity which is great.
I think you will be fine with 200-600mm (y)
Just hope its not severely overcast.
On the flip side... if it is sunny you can use your 1.4x with 200-600 and get some really amazing closeups which is something almost impossible to get (at least IME).

I have picked up some APS-C gear once again for travels.
A6600, 16-55/2.8 and 70-350mm.

Did consider the 24-70mm f4 but both 16-55 and 70-350mm are a lot better lenses than FF alternatives tbh.

When I took this one I somehow managed to crop the top of her head so today I increased the canvas size and tried to repair it. It's a quick repair but maybe most people wouldn't notice what I've done unless I told them :D

They do seem better alternatives but I'm not a fan of the A6xxx series form factor unfortunately.

I got along fine with A7C
For me the main issue is lack of forefinger dial which really irks me.

Could have bought the A7C again I suppose but I have pretty much decided on Nikon now unless they really mess up with their next release.
I am hoping they'll release something that will compete with A7RV i.e. a high res body with AF from Z9.

A6600 is cheaper and will make less loss selling it on. The lenses I bought on offer.

I do really like the Nikon bodies but have to be honest and say the Sony system works better for me at present due to the lenses, and blackout free shooting.

Blackout free while really nice isn't a deal breaker for me.

It's all about the AF and lenses after that. For the price of one 400mm f2.8 on Sony which is massive and heavy I can get both 400mm f4.5 and 800mm f6.3. both lenses are incredibly sharp. Will probably start with 400mm f4.5 with TCs.

The Nikon Z 24-120mm f4 is the best in class.

I'll keep my GM primes (14,24,35,85) and use it with the new megadap adapter.

Or I'll stay with Sony if they add some new lenses but I don't see anything like 400mm f4.5 coming up Sony. They just don't seem to care about that market.

A 400mm f4/f4.5 would be nice.

Oh, er, A7 and Sony 35mm f1.8.

We're off to a Thai restaurant shortly.

One day when we were there the cook spoke to her in Thai and she was completely lost and forgot how to speak Thai :D

I really like all your photos with your missus. Its so nice when your wife accepts your photography hobby and poses for you :)
Imagine when in 30 years you going to go back to those photos and watch it together, this is why I feel that our hobby is priceless.

Thank you, and yes your right, to me it's mostly about memories.

She tells me to take a camera out with us and she asks for pictures to be taken and she picks ones to send back to her friends and family as they're constantly swapping pictures and vids. We went to a Thai restaurant today and I was under strict instructions to take something faster than my A7 (it is rather slow) so I took my Panasonic TZ100 which is a F1 car compared to the A7's comfortable saloon car :D

My wife hates having her photo taken, memories or not :(

Oh dear, soz about that. I don't know if it's a part of Thai culture specifically or possibly more likely it may be just that some western countries are behind the rest or the world and see taking pictures with a camera as a bit questionable.

Mrs WW's family and friends are just constantly snapping and taking vids and sending them to each other. She wont pose, as in strike a pose, but she will stand still or let me snap unposed stuff like above. Some of her friends will strike a pose, probably influenced by what they've seen on social media. One friend in particular always strikes a pose when a camera is pointed at her and she is absolutely gorgeous so she does get her picture taken a lot.
