Nice camera, just a matter if you can put up with the Fuji files. I’ve looked at the X100’s several times but they’re just not flexible enough for me.

You are, don’t waste your money, go X100V or go home. Also you need a fairly big pocket for an X100 of any flavour. For what you appear to do if it was me I’d sell everything and get the X100V, can always add a WCL and/or TCL later if required.
BTW there’s absolutely nothing wrong with the Fuji files whatsoever.

I've just downloaded a couple of raws from DPR and processed them with the latest Photoshop and raw which just updated today and they look ok. I can't see any skin tone issues or worms or anything.
I don't suppose I'll get one as the GM5 is I suppose a known quantity and focusses well enough even with the slow to operate 20mm f1.7. It's tempting though as I'm a bit bored and need a pick me up

Lovely camera to use. A few years ago I covered my trip to Oz and HK purely with an X100F and w/a convertor. No worries. The lens may be a little soft compared to the latest one, but it's not so much as to spoil your pictures. But don't count on it as being easily pocketable (unless in a large overcoat!). If you think the LX100 isn't, then you've no chance with the X100.

Even a used X100v is £1k+ and personally I don't think it's worth it. Good luck to those who do love that camera but I'd rather have my A7 and a few lenses or even a A7III or A7c and something smaller from MFT than ditch the lot for an APS-C with a fixed lens costing that amount.
No, this would just be a camera to play with and occasionally use instead of the A7 or MFT rather than replacing everything as I'd lose the wider and longer and MF options which I do occasionally use. I may also lose the speed of operation of MFT which I do occasionally like. As a one camera solution it's just not on my radar.
It looks nice though...
The X100 is a touch slimmer than the LX100. As you know I have toyed with the idea of a LX100 but the contamination issue makes it a lottery I'm unlikely to try again. I've never tried a Fuji but the lens does worry me though.

The styling and operation are the attractions. I could go for sometime around the £400 mark but a £1k X100 camera is just out of the question as I don't believe it can replace MFT let alone the A7 for me.

I agree, they hold their price extremely well. This must be because of their popularity. You need to really want one and know how they feel to justify the price.

Yep, all the original issues of worms and waxy skin have long gone, however there are still some rendering traits that remain even in the SOOC jpegs. I keep hoping that they fix them and have downloaded sample raws and jpegs of every new Fuji camera over the past few years but alas they’re still there.And mine - when processed in the latest software. With earlier iterations of LR they needed treating with delicacy

I have had a few X100 series cameras. Tbh operation is not a plus point they have lots of buttons but they aren't that great ergonomically. Style wise they look great. Image quality and a.f performance is absolute pants though.
It's a nice wee toy and pretty to look at.

I've been playing with this one which I posted in other threads at the time. GM5 and 20mm f1.7 at f1.7 using eye detect.
Here the biggest issue is the DR as although after it's pulled back my software says the sky isn't blown it doesn't look right either.

I think I should just use the smaller MFT cameras more alongside the A7 which I use when I want the best file quality.

Looks like it's blown beyond recovery, so whilst you can pull back the highlights enough so they're not clipping according to the histogram there's no data there so will always look blown.I think I'll drop the idea.

I've recently started shooting underexposed by 2/3 - 1 stop a lot of the time to prevent this.

Yup. I see that.
I'm not a big fan of under exposing especially with MFT as that could well lead to boosting the shadows more than is ideal. That could well be ok with FF but with MFT it could lead to a less good final image when looking at the main subject. In the example above retaining the sky was never really a priority and any blown sky is a price worth paying for a well exposed main subject without any adverse evidence of lifted shadows and remember that it was only posted as an example of the limited MFT DR which I think is the biggest issue with the system. When DR isn't an issue, MFT is fine.
Same camera same lens same aperture same day but no issue unless you want detail in the white water

Looks like it's lost the hat to me.
I always did that with the Nikon (D610) but haven't needed to with the A7, although I do spot meter and evaluate in the EVF.
I'm a little grateful - this discussion has convinced me I DO NOT want an M43 camera, regardless of how much lighter the lenses are.

In what way ? The X100V is superior to any MFT compact in every way and beats many of the ICL models too.

Because you can't use lenses from 12-400mm for one. And that's what I have for MFT.
Your original suggestion was for me to sell everything and buy a X100v and I just can't see that as an option for me.

Cost for how often I thought I might actually use it mainly. Plus the sensor size & IQ but maybe that's being too snooty.

That's the thing. It would just be a GAS and experience buy for something between £300-£500. On another day I'd just buy another manual lens
I do prefer FF as I can use my manual lenses but MFT is useful because it's small and responds like a sports car so a Fuji would be an addition and wouldn't really replace anything and certainly not everything. I can see the point that it could be someone's only camera and that does appeal to me as I'd be going back to how it all started for me with a Kodak Instamatic but I'm not going to go that route today.
I do remember downloading some Fuji files years ago and not being impressed but the ones I've downloaded today do look good but that could be because I'm processing them with new software. The A7 isn't going anywhere and looking at MFT at 100% and despite the slightly derogatory comments above, and I am aware of the limitations and issues with MFT, the benefits still do sometimes easily outweigh the negatives for me so I think I'll try and forget the X100x for now

I did spot some of them for sale at what I thought was silly (cheap) money but then you need a lens and the bulk goes up. I suppose they're not as sort after as the X100 series and maybe don't hold their value as well?
One thing I have meant to look at is slimming down on MFT cameras as 4 is a bit much so I might see it I can have a close look at the GX9 and G100 as they're both 20mp cameras and if they're really close in IQ maybe one could go and beyond that the GX9 and GX80 are very similar so one could go if I could get a price that was worth accepting.

I tend to shoot a lot of high dynamic scenes and like to preserve the sky/clouds, that being said I'm still experimenting
I've got m4/3 and I'm a big fan, although I'm considering swapping it for an RX100. The EM10-II was to be something that was much lighter for when out on dog walks, but as it's not truly pocketable and needed a sling strap/bag I've started carrying my Sony instead for the improved IQ. I think if I had something truly pocketable that would do me for dog walks

For me Lee it has to be both an outdoor and an indoor hobby as I can't go out a lot of the time because of responsibilities at home so one part of the hobby for me is reading and researching and watching videos on line and looking for and buying relatively cheap things to keep the interest up. I have tried other indoor things such as jigsaws and board games the like but no one else is interested in doing those so I might as well just carry on with the photography hobby because I do need a way to pass time indoors when I can't get out. I do read books as well but I don't want to read books 24/7 or sit and watch day time TV
Each of my cameras and lenses are slightly different and they do give that little bit of interest and I can choose what I want to take out next time I get out plus if I add up the cost all this little collection is still cheaper than a more top end A7 series camera and lens so financially it's not a big thing.

This is what I tend to think... If I'm taking a bag I might as well take the Sony A7 but there are exceptions for me. The GM5 because I can hold that in the palm of my hand all day, when I want to use the Panasonic 45-150 or 100-400mm which I don't have Sony equivalents for and which would be big, heavy and expensive, and when I want silent shooting although the times when I want that now are few and far between.
The thing with the truly or rather almost pocketable cameras like a 1" sensor camera is that the chances are that in some situations the IQ and specifically the DR will go down and we've been spoilt by our A7 series cameras.

The thing is that you need to know when the shadows will need to be raised too much and IQ is going to be affected. Plus there are times when IMO blown areas are an artistic choice or if not just don't matter that much or maybe not at all in the final picture.

My backpack is stored with the A7, 35GM, 70-180mm and Mini 2 and filters in it. Literally grab it and go. The only thing I have to consider is the 24GM but that lives in a padded insert with all my night sky stuff. I don't tend to do street/town wandering photos though so I put up with the bulk of the backpack for the situations I'm usually in which often involves space for a flask, snacks, jacket, waterproofs maybe....
