The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Lovely shots, shows with the right hands you can take good pictures with whatever camera.

I actually have more m43 bodies than I do FF now lol.

Having said that the Panasonics I have are pants at tracking and action. They have 1/500s max limit on mechanical shutter.
We use them because they are small and still gives be nice image quality.

FF image quality in situations where you need to increase your ISO beyond 1600 is definitely noticeably better. Also Sony's tracking especially on something like A7IV is miles better than anything I have experienced on m43 (mind you I haven't used E-M1x or om-1)

If OP is just looking for a minimal setup with the likes of the new tamron 50-400mm for example that's perfectly possible. Just add a couple primes or a zoom at the wide end and you are done.
But FF does cost a lot more.
Thanks very much, appreciate the kind words.

With regards to tracking I always thought the EM1-II was excellent but it would be interesting to try it now after having the A9ii for a while. Not that it really matters, I never found the EM1-II wanting and managed to shoot everything I wanted (although didn't have Betty at the time).

I personally wouldn't swap from m4/3 to APS-C as there's not enough difference and you'd just be throwing money away imo if it's purely for IQ reasons. I've cropped pretty heavy with M4/3 and got decent results. IF you're worried about reach you can buy a used olympus 40-150mm f4-5.6 R (80-300mm eq) for under £100. It's really lightweight (to the point it feels a bit cheap) but IQ is very good. You can stick it in a coat pocket and barely know it's there.

Moving from m4/3 to FF I believe there is enough of a difference in IQ to justify the swap, however you then have to question whether your budget can stretch to something that you want and not just making do, plus the system is bigger and heavier.

What you have to ask yourself is whether you are going to see enough of a difference because at the end of the day it doesn't matter what others think.

Here's some comparisons from myself. Not exact comparisons but close.

I much prefer the m43 shot out of the two MotoGP shots. Notice the difference in colour tone in the orange. Which is closer to true life colour in your opinion?

I'm on the fence and keep changing my mind. I think I prefer the overall tone of the Olympus shot as I tend to prefer cooler images over warm ones, and I think in part that's helped by the extra track in the foreground as opposed to grass, the green edges to the track compared to red and then the blue advertising board. The olly one looks a bit more dynamic I think, but I did add about 20% extra motion blur in photoshop whereas the Sony is as shot. If you hold a gun to my head so to speak I would probably say I prefer the Olly shot for the reasons above, however the Sony does have a little bit of and edge in IQ as it has a bit more of a 3D look to it although how much of that is down to camera, lens and/or light I don't know. I also know that the Olly shot took a lot more processing to get it looking like that, the Sony shot's had very little done to it.

In terms of the bike and the leathers I would say the Sony colour is more accurate, although the Olly one was taken 3 years ago so my memory might not be as clear. I definitely prefer the whites on the leather of the Sony, the Olly has a slight greeny hue to it, although that's only really noticeable when they're side by side.

@addicknchips just for a bit of fun I've re-edited the Sony Moto GP shot to more closely match the editing from the m4/3 shot, added some extra motion blur, got rid of the grass and added a heap of contrast and clarity, here it is against the m4/3 and the original sony edit.

Edit: the difference in clarity and contrast between the Sony shots doesn't look as obvious on here as they do on my computer for some reason

I think that I still prefer the original Sony one. Having used both OM and Sony systems I would go for the Sony every time but as has been said it is a matter of personal preference, they all do a good job now.

Yes, the SAL 1650 f/2.8 is a good option - it wasn't out when I bought my CZ 1680, otherwise it would have been my choice.

The problem with using Google to determine the scale of a problem is that you only see how often things went wrong (or people repeated hearing about someone else having the problem) - you don't see the numbers where the lens / camera performed flawlessly. So unless you know how many copies of the item actually sold, it's impossible to determine the scale of the issue. 100 faulty items of something that sold 1000 copies is a significant problem, but if 1M copies were sold, it's a minor problem.
Just ordered a SAL1680 f2.8 from MPB, looking forward to trying it out

Me too, but that’s more to do with the shallow DOF, lower noise and better DR.

It was blue skies and sun when we started walking but of course it soon went to complete cloud cover and rain.

A few ghostly echos i need to learn how to clean up in post (Ukrainian flag & Woman in dress on the right) but happy with it

What's the problem? I can't see any problems on my screen.

The rumor site says new Samyang lenses are coming... but what's the "V" designation? Video? If they are all the same size with the focus rings in the same place I suppose that could be the case.

I'd assume Video/Cine? Odd aperture f1.9, wonder if that's a typo?

And often video lens have clickless aperture rings

I like it best if we're given a choice. I don't think I would buy a permanently clickless lens.

At their best a video lens might have some real advantages for a stills shooter including possibly less breathing, maybe more accurate aperture ratings and possibly more colour consistency across the range.

One from yesterday. We're going back tomorrow and I do hope there isn't another thunderstorm.

A7 and Sony 35mm f1.8.

Edit.
There wasn't a thunderstorm when we went back but it did still pour down and we got soaked again :D

Samyang have sold video lenses before with apertures based on transmission rather than f number. This often results in an unconventional value.

Quick grab shot of granddaughter, A7 IV + Tamron 28-75 G2, lighting Amazon Fire kids tablet lol

A familiar sight in my house as well with my daughter, so much so that I came home yesterday and she didn't even break focus never mind look up and greet me. Aye, welcome home....lol meanwhile my son is two floors up doing a Chevy Chase Christmas Vacation on my electricity meter what with the computing power he's rocking. Seriously thinking about shopping for some 25mm tails...if you know what I mean :D

Shop around, I’ve found offers can vary quite a bit, I had offers that differed by £165 for my Sigma 85mm

I've had a chat with WEX and enquired if the trade-in could be more generous seeing as I would be buying the new lens from them as well, so keeping it all flowing through their till. They've come back asking me how much I want for the 24-105mm. I was really hoping they would come back with a revised offer so now I'm wondering what would be a reasonable amount to ask? The lens is quite literally like brand new with all packaging. Would £600 be taking the proverbial?

It's worth that all day long. Park would pay £575, you'd probably get £700 on ebay when the next seller offer comes round, which seems to be every other week at the moment. Try Cameraworld, the Chelmsford branch have always given me the best price. LCE also worth a try.

MPB offered £625 for mine a few months back.

Thanks. I've had a look online and in excellent condition it seems to go for £800-900+ so I've asked for a little more based on the condition that I also buy the Sigma from them. I think that is fair. An extra bonus perhaps is that I bought the Sony lens from them in the first place in 2021, so they can be guaranteed of a one owner history! lol

I considered selling my Sony set up last week so I asked for prices from a variety of camera retailers and was offered the following for the Sony 24-105 F4 which is in an as new condition.

MPB: £500
Wilkinson: £560
LCE: £535
Wex: £554
Harrison: £510
Cameraworld: £630
Park: £575
Jessops:: No response.

Cameraworld offered the most for all my kit. However, I am not selling anything. Indeed I bought the Sony 40mm F2.5 this morning to add to my set up :)

Are they all straight cash offers or is some of them trade-in prices?

Cameraworld sometimes offer me far more than other places as well, they must not have a very big mark up.

I'll try to make this the last one from the Moto GP, I think this looks more dynamic than previous ones.

There's a Sony 24mm f1.4 in the classifieds.

I have the f2.8 G and it's good enough for me. I've been thinking that I should take it out soon.
