The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Went to the Cromford Classic Car and Bike Show this morning trying out the 50mm f1.4 and 35mm f1.8 for this kind of event, definitely prefer the 50mm FOV, lack of distortion and rendering. Note to self though, when I've been using the 35mm f1.8 make sure you adjust back to f1.4 when using the 50mm

A wee trip up to Knockhill yesterday afternoon. Motorsport is so hard when you only do it now and again. I was getting fairly handy at the panning with the 70-200 and 1.4 but had no chance with the 200-600 as at 400-600mm the wind was blowing it so much framing was hard enough never mind panning. Forgetting my filters was a real pain too

Nice. Do you need to pay to get access for photography?

They look good to me Lens hoods are a real pain in the wind, they act like sails. I’ve had to take mine off on occasion.

I’ve not caught up on race 3 from Knockhill yet.

I've taken them off in the past but the only time I used the 200-600 I was shooting through the fence so played it safe. My mate went up on the Friday and the big boys were out in the rain. Gutted I never made the effort as that is my favourite conditions to shoot motorsports.

Just the same as access for the event. Loads of photographers at Knockhill every time I go and there was even a Sony user inside the fences. I don't see many pros rocking the same kit as me. The two positions I shot from I had a Z9 next to me both times

I see the odd Sony being used by the pros but not many, Canon DSLRs are still the most frequently used that I see at motorsport.

The other two pros were shooting Canon. One with two 1dx iiis and the other with 2 R3s. Sony boy had two A1s and 400GM and a 70-200Mk2. I just need another A1 and I will be there in terms of my ideal sport set up

To get my ideal sports setup I just need 2x A1’s, a 400mm f2.8 and the 24-70mm GMii and a photographers version of a ‘caddie’ to carry it all for me

I came across a link to this on another site and thought people might be interested...

There's an interesting review of the Sony 20mm f1.8 on the rumor site, here's a direct link...

One thing that struck me was the amount of vignetting reported. Granted I haven't used mine much but I don't remember anything that extreme. There's also comment on the rumor site from one owner saying he's not seen the level of vignetting reported in the review. So, I checked and of the pictures I remember taking with that lens none have had any vignetting correction applied at all (and I haven't used a lens profile either) and I don't suppose my ancient A7 applies it in camera? So, either my pictures do have it and I just haven't noticed and I admit to not doing a white door test or there's something else coming into play but vignetting doesn't seem to be unusually noticeable in real world pictures to me.

Has anyone else noticed the level of vignetting reported here?

So Im going to order a new bike, I used to cycle my commute for years a while back but stopped as the ride home was just an utter pain. Now that Im going back into the office more regularly Im finding that Im really not comfortable on packed public transport anymore.
I want to get rid of the rucksack when cycling as that always began to hurt my back on the ride home (old snowboarding injury) so was thinking of using a side panier to carry my stuff. That then leaves the question of what do I do with my camera, Im not sure a side panier would be a good option as it will get bumpy on the crap roads we have here..
Anyone else here ride a bike and carry a camera - what do you use?

As you know, I used it pretty much exclusively for night skies at f/1.8 to f/2.5 and even then I didn't notice anything over excessive!

I carry my camera in the panniers on my motorbike, I just put it in a camera bag and make sure the panniers are padded with a towel or similar as they're hard panniers.

I recently bought a new bike and have added rear panniers.
When I bought my Vanguard backpacks a few years ago, I got a free insert that can turn any bag/rucksack into a camera bag.
Now, I place the insert into my pannier bag and my camera and lenses are nice and secure in the padded insert.
Something similar to these

The A1 firmware update has made the focus even better i tried it out with my 70/200 MK1 and the hit rate on kids is more accurate .
I have the MK 2 on the way and i think it will be just about perfect I shall put the MK1 up for sale soon.
Rob.

They are a fantastic combination

I will be keeping Olympus and the A7 III + Sammy AF 45mm, plus LX100 II and GR III but I might well get rid of the rest in my signature.

I'm surprised you've bought the Oly, what's the attraction?

I used my GM5 today because I wanted a small camera but with the SLR styled cameras MFT loses a bit of appeal for me as the bodies aren't significantly smaller than my A7 but I suppose once you start mounting larger lenses there'll be an advantage for MFT again. Another plus for MFT for me is that my A7 hasn't got an electronic shutter.

Sadly because of personal health issues I am cutting right back and only want really light kit now, as of Thursday I will be stuck in home for a bit so will start to sort out what goes in a bundle.

Ah. Good luck with it.

As I can't get out much and when I do get out it's usually just to the same old places I do think of selling most of my stuff but then I think... it's an interest and a hobby and what would I do with any money I raised? The old film era primes should really go as I haven't used them for a while now but I end up keeping it all.

Same for me as well going to the same places over and over again.

Sorry to hear this, I hope it's nothing too serious.

I keep fancying trying the Fuji X100V but it would just be out of curiosity rather than a serious purchase for me and as a result it's far too pricey for me. I've always had a love hate relationship with Fuji rendering.

Might be interested in the A7C for my eldest and maybe the X100V for my missus, let me know when they go up for sale.

Thanks Toby, sadly it is the big C hence why I'm having an op on Thursday and we go from there.

Best of luck with it Dave. I'm sure everyone here will be be wishing you the best possible outcome.
