Image quality wise both are very close but the 45mm just wins imo, weight wise is of know concern to me about the 50mm as it is light as a feather.

Hmm interesting that you say the 45mm has better IQ. I’m very close to pulling the trigger on the 50mm FE II for the extra pop but if you’re saying the 45mm is better then I may have a rethink.

To me it really is so close on IQ between both these lenses hence why I want to test then up on Devils Dyke, even if the 45mm beats the 50mm I doubt I would get rid of the 50mm as in time I'd regret it.

Funny really as I think about it, the only lens that I regret selling was the best lens I have ever owned the one and only Fuji XF90mm f2. Truely a lens in a class of it's own, not that I will own it again as I'm very happy with Sony.

I'm just back from a holiday and been working through my photos but my photos from the A9 and the Tamron 28-200mm are poor and I'm not sure what I've done wrong whether it's a general photography error or something specific to the camera. The 100-400mm shots look great but the 28-200mm look a bit like the shutter speed is too low but I was shooting at 1/FL with the onboard IS enabled and they're simple static shots.

These are a few shots showing the issue which I've exported the full jpeg of using default settings in Lightroom and a crop from the same image.

Edit - I can't seem to get the forum and sharing to agree on this, the files are working fine in the preview but not when I post so I've had to change the full images for downloads.

There's quite a few like this one and I was thinking it's due to motion blur of the subject (even though the subject wasn't moving much) but the guard rails behind are blurred as well, 58mm, f11, 1/60:

Golly. That's pretty dramatic

Is this with the mechanical shutter and if so is it just the same with the electronic shutter as one thing that springs to mind is shutter shock. To discount that you could try electronic shutter and see if things improve and even try EFCS which might well help, if it is indeed shutter shock.

So if I download the images and view them full screen and 1:1 the first and third just look like it's a poor quality lens and like images I've had with old "do-it-all" lenses, however I've heard that that lens is supposed to be good so those images surprise me. It's possible there's a bit of decentering as the left side of the frame possibly looks worse than the right, but it needs proper testing to know for sure.

The second image just looks like camera shake, but again this is surprising giving it's 1/focal length and not particularly slow. Do you have particularly shaky hands, or was it windy or anything? Also, does the lens have it's own IS/OS? If so the lens IS switch will override that of the camera's IBIS so always make sure the lens OS switch is on.

I'd be more willing to believe this is some sort of fault than a working but just poor lens. I don't think I've used a lens which was that bad.

Sorry maybe I didn't explain myself very well (not uncommon ). I don't think the lens is right by any stretch, what I meant is the first and 3rd images look more like a cheap poor quality lens similar to what I've had with all in one lenses (although I've only had these on fixed lens cameras) rather than camera shake, whereas the second image definitely looks like shake, however as you say at 1/FL is shouldn't have shake.

Have you tried the camera and lens on a tripod or at faster shutter speeds?

What ISO were you shooting at?

The lens is almost two years old so that ship has long sailed unfortunately, I'm just generally lazy and leave the 100-400mm on the camera and when I need something better use the 24-70/70-200mm on the Nikon so this week I thought I would properly use the 28-200mm.

No I haven't used a tripod but have used a higher shutter speed, I was seeing the same at 1/125:

A lot of the blurry ones are of the dog even though he's fairly static and the shutter speed is at 1/125 but he might have been flicking his head faster than I was realising.

The ISOs were all low between 100 and 250.

If that's a whole image I just can't see this being diffraction.

The obvious thing to check is camera shake but only John knows how good he is at handholding when shooting and if he doesn't think that technique is the issue that leaves... what? Shutter shock shouldn't happen with the electronic shutter so if it only happens with this lens that possibly leaves some sort of kit issue, loose element? Some weird focus thing?

That's a great idea, I was completely forgetting I still have an A7SII so that would be good to test with to isolate the lens from the A9.

Well, 1/125th should be okay. I only suggested the tripod because a static camera shooting a static subject at different apertures will more than likely settle the user shake vs equipment and hopefully find a reason.
