Each to their own I dislike them, for me they aren't good for photography which is why they are mainly only found on cameras aimed at amateur photographers, which I guess the A7IV is to be fair.

CanonRumors reports: We have been told that Canon is indeed going to release a full-frame RF mount camera with 100+ megapixels some time in the first half of 2023. The announcement could come later in 2022. If that's true that Canon will be the first breaking the 100MP barrier in the Full Frame...

61mp was too many for me for the majority of the time, 100mp is massive overkill except in rare situations imo.

I can only see myself buying a high mp count camera if that's all that's available when my A7 conks. I suppose one day all cameras, even entry level ones, may be high mp count by todays standards unless some new technology comes along which doesn't have mp counts as they are now.

I keep thinking back to the days when I used to fix SMD disc drives. I think the 20 and 40mp ones took two of us to carry and there was a slightly higher mp count one which was permanently trolly mounted. I remember when HDD were 20mp too and half of that capacity use to disappear when it was bad tracked.

I'm getting old :D

Yep mp count is only going to get bigger. I assume tech will improve so that noise is kept low, but I do wonder if and when lenses will be able to resolve the detail
 
I'd imagine that processing power is going to have to increase to squirt that 100mp onto a card which might mean heat issues and bigger batteries but who knows what the future will bring?

Just imagine a high frame rate 100mp camera though :D

Would definitely need CFexpress cards.
 
Re 100MP - we almost certainly will see Quad Bayer sensors - so you can choose a 25MP image with higher sensitivity/dynamic range or a high resolution image - IMO the only advantage of a high MP sensor is do you have the ability to crop significantly and still have a decent resolution image - this reduces the range of lens sizes you might need

How would quad sensors work? I assume you couldn’t have 4x FF sensors in a ‘square’ as the lenses would need to be huge to cover the image circle.

No, the a.f on the A7RIV is not as good as the A9, A9II or A1. Not even close.

Very true (y) However, gman said that one of the things he would be shooting is his dog and I did find the A7RIV wasn't great in this area. That being said I still got plenty of shots with it.

Normal size sensor, Bayer grid is made up of 2x2 colour filters, so each filter covers 4 pixels in a square, so for 25MP image you are drawing on data from 4 pixels. In the 100MP you reduce colour spatial accuracy,
as the demosaicing has to work from a large surface area.

But it potentially has huge flexibility in the 25MP mode as photo sites in the 2x2 block can be tuned in software to produce different sensitivities, and combined in different ways. Probably need a new processing stack on the sensor stack to get fast readouts though and this will come at the expense of heat for high frame rates

Interesting, this would (in theory) be the perfect scenario, being able to choose high res if you want without having to resort to sensor shift.

It isn't poor, it just isn't anywhere near as good as the A9, A9II or A1, to be fair though not much else is.

A7IV has better a.f than the A7RIV, the A7III is more reliable as well even though it doesn't have real time a.f.

I still wouldn't would say the A7RIV a.f was poor though.

That's an interesting read Alan, thanks for posting. He doesn't actually mention "Mirrorless" cameras though just SLR units and I for one think that is possible in the not too distant future.

I just can't see it unless the sensors are going to get bigger and the lenses better as if they don't all the smartphone makes can do is throw more computing power and software at it.

But, he's in a much better position to know although I do think it's an odd thing for someone in his position to say as if people believe him why would they invest in a Sony camera system or add to what they've already got if a smartphone is going to offer better quality in the near future?
 
My friend was driving to Southend on Sea yesterday and so I decided to go with him as it's 50 miles from me. Cost me nothing in fuel and taking a break from street photography, it gave me a chance to do some seaside shots. :D

It was a beautiful sunny and very hot day. Had a lovely fried breakfast at one of the beach cafes and later on an ice cream with a flake. Had to be done! There's about five photos here where I got to play with my seldom used Haida 10 stop ND filter. Thing is, between f11 and maximum f16 with my Sigma 16mm lens, correct exposure with the filter on was giving me no more than 5 to 8 seconds. How would I have been able to get a much longer exposure of 20 to 30 seconds without over exposing to get that really smooth ice looking water surface? Also, for you experienced people who do these kind of shots, are they ok compositionally? Happy to receive critique.

I totally love the AF45mm as now the AF50mm does not get used at at all anymore. I'd sell the AF50mm but would not get much for it now anyway.

Image quality wise both are very close but the 45mm just wins imo, weight wise is of know concern to me about the 50mm as it is light as a feather.
