The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Downer dude :(

I used my Rokkor 135mm f2.8 the other day to take a couple of pictures of Mrs WW's strawberry plants so she could send them to her friends and I was surprised how nice and sharp it is at f2.8 at MFD as I hadn't used it for a long time.
I've got one of those too and yes it's an excellent lens but quite a bit bigger and heavier than the 100 f4. Therefore less likely to get thrown in the bag as an extra on a day out.

Film era 135mm f3.5's are often cheap and might be a bit smaller than a f2.8, or look at for another 100mm :D

Will do Alan. I'm only a few weeks into my new Sony A7R4 and there is still a lot to learn. Very happy with the way my kit is shaping up: Sony 24/2.8G, Sony 35/1.4GM and now the Sigma 45/2.8. That's the main primes for now. I may add a zoom or the 50/1.2GM as a prestige lens, when my bank balance recovers. Would like to add a portrait lens too, but it seems people are expecting the 85GM to be updated "soon".

I don't know what you tend to shoot but I find 24mm, 35mm & 70-180mm quite nice :)

Thanks Lee. I mostly shoot people (family, friends) & travel. Don't use much over 90mm but that may due to coming from a rangefinder background. I have not used 180mm for 30 years -- maybe time to give it a try.

I think the Tamron 70-180mm is even cheaper since I bought mine the other month. Which is to be expected..... :ROFLMAO:

I find it great for woodland, landscape and panoramic images. Allows a nice set of images at different focal lengths.

As it's quiet...

I love this place... A7 and 35mm f1.8.

I've wanted a picture of this for a while but I've struggled to get one I'm happy with. This will do until a better one comes along.

It's difficult as the sky is usually harsh and easy to blow. As here.

Is it possible to tell the distance from the sensor to where it focussed? I cannot see it in the EXIF

I posted some software called a7info earlier. May have more data in there?

The focus areas are stored in exif. You're not looking at all of the data in your screenshot.

Thanks, yes i had that software installed from ages ago to show where the focus hit. And yes, it does show the focal distance, much appreciated.

Thank you Mike, I think I went to far on the clarity so will have another look.
Do you edit 8-bit or 16-bit?
With 16-bit, there shouldn't be any banding.
Photoshop previews 16-bit images as 8-bit which shows false banding.
Zooming into 67-100% shows the true image.
Another way is to create a Stamp Layer on the top of the Layer stack ;)

Saving as png rather than jpg can help with banding too, unless it’s in the raw of course.

I use C1 Pro 22 and Affinity Photo, you have lost me on the rest sorry to say.
It was Raw file though.

I've not had my camera out for a while now; I just don't seem to have the time, but I'm also back in this annoying state of indecision. I still really fancy the A7Riv for the image quality and resolution, but will the AF be good enough for a fast moving dog? Will I be left frustrated compared to the A9?

I found the A7Riv lacking in AF for dogs.

Edit: I’m talking relatively speaking (y)

Thanks, this is my worry as it doesn't really matter how good the sensor is if it's not in focus. The D3 and D750 were fine, but my A6000 wasn't good and I had to revert to tricks such as high fps and manual focus on a point as the dog runs through the focus point and hope one of the frames would catch him. I can't be doing with that nonsense again.

But then how many photos will be the dog running at full pelt? What about all the rest where the resolution and dynamic range of the A7Riv will be glorious? Not to mention my panoramic interest. I wonder if I'm really making the most of the A9's AF, whereby I would maybe make more use of the A7Riv's sensor?

Jeez, I've never been so undecided about something in all my life. I know the A1 is the answer, but it's too much for a hobby especially now I'm shoving £1.85 a litre into my car.

I wonder what the price will be and if it will push down the price of the iv? But then the rumoured A9 iii will probably push the price of mine down as well?

I'm a bit switched off from my bird photography at the moment, so I'm trying to become a bit more of an "all rounder".
I popped up to my local club cricket match on Saturday with the A7iv and FE200-600mm and these are a couple of images from the match.
The pair of batsman leaving the field had reason to be looking pleased - they'd just shared a stand of 160+ to win the game for their side!
Thanks for looking.

The A1 is the answer for sure, if you're rich enough. I've never owned the A9 so all my references are regarding the A9ii. The A7RIV definitely missed far more than my A9ii does trying to capture Betty running towards the camera, that being said the A9ii isn't perfect even using the 70-200mm GM2. Now of course some of this could well be user error, but I don't think it is most of the time as the AF point is where I wanted it but it's still back focussed, and I've tried all AF modes.

As I've said a few times on here though I do think Betty is a particularly difficult subject though as her face has very little contrast. Eye-AF struggles to recognise the eyes even when Betty's static and close. What I'm getting at is that the A7RIV might not be 'that bad' depending on size and colour of the dog.

The other things to consider is that the A7RIV is noticeably slower in operation, particularly reviewing images and also when waiting for images to be written. The last thing to consider is the lack of drive/focus mode dial on the R series. I use this a lot on the A9ii and wouldn't now be without it.

This is just a guess but I'd be surprised is the A9 price will be affected that much now as I'd have thought it would have been more affected by the Gen II.

Just playing with my new to me A1. Not taken any real images year but got it set up to my likes and some good improvements. An extra button available to customise in play allows all the options I need. Touch screen is so much easier to use and new menus are much better.

I set it and the A9ii up to the FTP Sony transfer app on my phone. Worked really well even when trying to confuse it by sending a batch from each camera simultaneously. Might now do that pitch side and FTP to the desk from my phone. It allows an easy edit and doesn't tie up the camera.

The aps is great and I'll use that quite a lot I think

Usability wise it is a step up from the A9ii

Enjoy. Will be interested to hear your thoughts on whether AF is noticeably better than the A9ii.

Some pics with the Sigma 45 2.8. The first one is at f2.8
