Cool. What's your thoughts on the 70-200mm GM II?

Oh, if you can use either or then that's OK. I wonder if IQ will have been sacrificed for size? Knowing Sony/current camera market it won't be cheap.

It's light :) which I too easily underrate until I'm hurting.

I've been using the 135mm 1.8 in it's absence so it'll have a lot to live up to... but it will be a needed workhorse when primes aren't convenient.

I'm not in many rush to take it for a spin, it's not a lens which personally excites me - plus I was up to 2am this morning processing images from last nights theatre, so tired.

I'm used to the Tamron 70-180mm now so the GM II might seem slightly heavy to me :exit: A 70-200mm type lens is probably my most used lens so I do get excited by it ;) I'd love the 50mm f1.2 but as I only use this kind of lens a couple of times/year I can't justify the cost. I've also got the Sigma 85mm f1.4 Art which barely gets used either :oops: :$

Most significant positive thing is: hardware aperture ring, in keeping with some other recent Sony primes. Seems Sony has been paying attention to Fujifilm.

But at that price... no thanks.

my 85mm 1.4 has become my least used lens, but when the 85mm 1.2 gets announced.... it'll be - will I, won't I :D

Getting into the 24/35/50 range is always my aim, if I'm using the 70-200 it's probably because I'm not allowed to move from where I'm shooting

the price is expected. The zeiss came in at £1150
So £1300 isn't that big increase after 7 years.

Oh I didn’t see the price before. Yeah that’s what I expected too, lenses are just crazy prices these days. I think I paid circa £500 for my “as new” 16-35mm f4 which was much easier to swallow ;)

That being said look what’s just arrived :lol:

Ordered it yesterday, will be selling a few lenses to get my money back :runaway: I don't have the 2xTC so won't be able to provide that feedback I'm afraid. I would have bought it if there was a chance it could compete with the 100-400mm but everything I've seen so far says not.
 
Assuming that new lens can be zoomed manually or by using the W-T control... is there any advantage in using the W-T control?

I've only used one once, on a Nex 6 I think, with the power zoom kit lens, and I didn't like it as I found it impossible to control and get the framing I wanted when being picky. Just wondering if there is any advantage?

Looking to buy a used Sony for wildlife. My thoughts are the A7 iii with the 100-400 lens. How with combo be for wildlife ie fast enough autofocus. I seem to remember the A7 iii dies not do ficys tracking

Whilst not up with the best of the current crop it’s still a great camera with fantastic AF and more than capable. Depending on the type of wildlife you may find reach lacking.
 
So a quick test with the 70-200mm GM II this morning whilst walking Betty and I'm very pleased. Hit rate is much higher with Betty running towards the camera than the Tamron, no back focussed shots just the odd slightly soft shot which could be user error (although animal AF doesn't work with Betty very well as it can't see her eyes and thinks her ears or the harness is the eyes for some reason). Lens is fast and sharp as you'd expect. Bokeh seems nice to me, less 'fussy' than the Tamron. My only 'complaint' is that the zoom ring isn't as stiff as other lenses and it's a little too easy to turn inadvertently when gripping the lens, something I'll have to get used to. It's not loose, and I'm sure the video guys will love it, I just prefer something requiring a little more effort to move it.

How do you find the A7C when compared with your A7III? Do you miss anything about the A7III when you only have the 7C with you?

I keep toying with the idea of getting an A7C and the A6400 which I got from you has almost convinced me that I like the form factor of that style of body.

Thank you Colin, for me the A7C is one hell of a great little camera, I only ever use just the screen when using the A7C. Don't get me wrong I really do like my A7 III but using the A7C really is a joy to use.

This seems to be the way Sony are going with some lenses but as lens profiles and even in camera corrections make things easy the distortion probably wont be an issue for many people. That's the case for me with the high distortion by todays standards Sony 24mm f2.8 anyway.

A lens that maybe doesn't get talked about enough. I keep meaning to use mine but I usually reach for something else so I'll have to make sure I do use it more often.
