The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Set up your most used settings in the mymenu list, much easier to find things. I've then set up a button as a short cut to my menu.

You can do it as shown above, however it does seem to degrade the image quality quite a bit, you know, with this being a photography forum and all

I tend to link from Flickr, and whilst it still degrades the IQ it doesn't appear to do so as much as a direct upload.

I find the softening of pictures hard to understand as posting direct using the forum button or even from imgur some pictures look soft and some seem ok so it's hard to know what's going on. I posted a picture in another thread yesterday and it was overly soft but fine on my screen.

I've always assumed that unless everything is fine (uploader's screen dpi, forum's width within browser code, viewer's screen dpi), then at least one bit of cheapo up/down-scaling software is going to have a go at adjusting the image's size and it will always go soft/ugly.

Yep, congrats. That house on the right is VERY close to that church and graveyard. Would give me the willies living there! :puke:

It's actually not quite as close as it appears on the photograph - probably about 35 yards between them.

Well, it's arrived (Samyang AF 24-70mm FE f2.8)
It's a monster and I'm taking weightlifting courses.
The reviews have been excellent, so I'm looking forward to seeing the reality.

One of the interesting features of this lens is the there is custom switch with 2 positions,
Position 1 allows the focus ring to operate in normal manual focus mode.
Position 2 allows the focus ring to be aperture control mode.

I find this to be really useful as at least 80% of my normal shooting is in aperture priority mode.
The lens is fully weather sealed and is par-focal, so good for video.

Nothing can be as bad as Facebook's compression of photos.

What a difference a day makes. Lovely sunshine and mild weather yesterday. Took the camera out to get a few shots at the end of our training session.
Old sigma 300mm f2.8 adapted with mc-11

Sunshine, what's that?

Nice photo, that lens renders beautifully (y)

Thanks! It’s very nice. I’d love an updated e- mount version. Seems to be a bit of an abandoned focal length by all manufacturers. It’s tracking performance adapter on the canon R system is great though. A bit hit and miss in Sony which is understandable considering it’s age.

Trouble is modern lenses tend to concentrate more on sharpness at a sacrifice of rendering which is a shame.

I've got the 300mm f2.8 in Pentax mount.
It's a lovely lens.
I use it on Pentax bodies but also adapt it to use with my a7iv.

I won't be selling to MPB that's a fact- thank you for your input Tommy :)
I just meant as a guide to getting prices for selling on here.

Most people on here when they see something for sale that they are interested in, are then themselves generating a quote on MPB and then offering slightly more than that, so MPB quote plus 10% should give you a fair idea of what you would expect to get on here.

You will get a lot more for your gear selling on eBay even minus the fees especially if you can get one one of the eBay seller offers.

If you did decide to go down the trade route WEX will buy some stuff for cash if you don't want to trade in, A7RIV might be in their list.

I think with some newer lenses it does look as if the designers have had rendering pretty high on the list of things to do well, just look at the latest higher end Sony primes but trying to get everything good pushes the size, weight and price up.

For quite some time I've wanted smaller cheaper lenses (in my case primes) which aren't cutting edge but just good enough and I think we've seen few if any of them. Problems with lenses like this could include less good performance away from the centre of the frame and rough bokeh at wide apertures, just like some old film era primes and that'd put a lot of people off so I don't think lenses like this are going to come from Sony.

With Sony one thing they don't seem too bothered about is CA / fringing.

Just for fun...Squirrel!

A7 and Voigtlander 35mm f1.4 at f2, just luck really as he paused just long enough to focus and shoot :D

100% from that.

I wonder about some of the 'AI' processors too, sometimes they can make the photos very unreal, almost like stick-on vinyl cutouts.

I'm not sure what the AI processors are you're referring to (unless you mean the fake background blur of mobiles phones etc?), but I like the cut out appearance that fast lenses gives, but don't like anything that looks artificial (y)

Guys, any input on how the Tamron 70-180mm would perform on the A7?

I guess it should be more than good enough yeah? Much in the same way that the 35GM performs for me?
On the A7 yes it'll probably perform about the same as 35GM or most other native lenses.

It's AF will definitely be much faster than your 80-200mm ;)

That is very true! If it matches the 35GM that would be fine for me. I just didn't want it to have some firmware stuff or something in it which rendered it a bit duff on the older bodies/focusing systems that's all.
