The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

This could interest some A7IV owners...

It seems to be with close up portraits with wide open lens. creating very shallow dof. , its focussiing on eyebrows instead of the eye itself
Seem odd that the company that's been doing eye AF for so long make an error on their latest version

Super narrow DoF is one of those trends that's passed me by. Must make anyone who's spent big money on an eye-AF camera plus the fastest of portrait lenses rather annoyed!

I mostly like peoples heads to be in the DoF, having one eye in is ok now and again and for test shots but usually it's the pictures where people are in the DoF that I like the most.

It was a trend? I mostly gravite to shallow DOF not for the DOF but that its a product of fast lenses and I like fast lenses for low light photography.

Seemed like a trend to me, especially with phone apps faking it. :) Portraits for sure, but I have seen a lot of shallow DoF in product photography, too. I think it's meant to maximise the gear-pron feeling.

For many of us, you are right - in less-than-ideal lighting conditions (and poor/no flash skills), it's just a downside of going down to a low f-stop.

It's made its way into videography too, I can't tell you the number of TV series I've watched over the past couple of years where they do close up head/face shots where there's about an eyelash DOF. Don't get me wrong I like shallow DOF, or more the 'pop/subject isolation' but not to 'that' level and not all the time.

They also use it as a device to give an element of tension between two characters, shifting focus from shallow DOF 'highlighting' one character to focus on another.
It can work well, but as you say, there are also some where it's being used because the director saw it somewhere and thought it looked good, so copied it!

:)

Sometimes I have to watch a Roy Andersson movie to recalibrate my eyeballs! o_O I swear, he must film everything with tiny sensors at f11.

I know it's been asked a few times (3 months ago or so).

Looking for a small bag that'll take my a1 and 200-600... and somewhere for a bottle of water and a monopod.

Not really bothered about price. Got to be comfortable, easy access, can take lens and camera together... hood reversed is fine.

I've read the main "page" that people link. Just wondered if anyone has tried any of the bags? Ta

How come you're getting rid? What did you replace it with? :)

I've just been looking at a thread about the Voigtlander 50mm f1 on another site, tested against various Leica lenses, and my Gosh the Voigtlander gives impressive performance into the corners from about f2.8 but this is on a Leica M10-R. If they can keep this performance with an e mount version of the lens it'll be interesting, if they do one. I'm not interested in buying one, but I'll read and watch the reviews.

The lens...

I thought these lenses might interest a couple of people who frequent this forum.
I call them my 3 Amigos - all M42 Takumars of great quality:

Super Takumar 50mm f1.4 (the more desirable 8 element version)
Super Multi Coated Takumar/Auto Takumar 85mm f1.8
Super Takumar 105mm f2.8

The 85mm and 105mm are in collectors condition, complete with cases, caps and hood etc..

I adapt these for use with my A7iv - they are just lovely to handle, built like you know what.

Excuse me posting these, I just love them!

I have the 28 and 35mm f3.5 and 50mm f1.4.

These were taken with the 50mm, the last time I used it.

The 28 and 35mm are gorgeous, tiny and lovely to use. The 50mm is IMO weak at f1.4 away from the central area but it gives one of the nicest looks of all the old 50's I have straight out of the camera for people pictures.

Family shot.

Just out of interest, I took these photographs of my 3 Takumars with a Pentax K5iiS coupled with an M42 Carl Zeiss Jena Flektagon 35mm f2.4 that focuses down to 8" !

I just got a vintage Vivitar 28/2.8, but not tried it yet and I'm not sure if it's rated that highly. It came with the A7S bundle that I picked up last week. I will give it a go, and see what I think. With the A7ii I had a couple of years ago, the Minolta 55/1.7 was nice to use. Of course, they all look small and bijou until we put the adapter on. :)

More than just a rumour now about a7iv focus issues.

I have that Minolta 55mm, it was the first lens I bought to adapt to MFT. Yup. When you put these tiny lenses on an adapter they're suddenly the size of the Sony 55mm f1.8 or the Sony mount Voigtlander 50mm f2 I have.

My Sony mount Voigtlander family. The 35mm f1.4 has just about taken over from my film era primes.

I've no idea how good that Vivitar 28mm is but I'll be shocked if it isn't perfectly usable.

Sorry for delay, yeah, interested.

Does anyone here have the Samyang 24-70mm f2.8 lens?
The reviews look very good, and I'm in the market for a 2.8 standard zoom.

Well the rain nearly put me off today, but was passing Leighton Moss RSPB and couldn't resist.

Really lovely set of images.

Really lovely set of images.

Thanks, quite pleased to finally get some half decent shots of Male Bullfinches, they've been evading me for too long

The rumor site talking about the upcoming Sigma 20mm f2 announcement.

As the Sony 20mm f1.8 is rather good I wonder how the Sigma can compete? It could be better or maybe it'll compete on price? The Sigma lenses styled a bit like old style manual lenses do look good to me compared to the more usual black tube. Anyway, we'll soon know how it's styled and how it performs.

It will be cheaper, 95% as good, and probably a bit bigger heavier.
