The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

The rumor site says...

Can it be as good as the Sony 20mm f1.8? Maybe it wont be quite as good but it could be good enough and cheaper? Who knows... Time will tell.

I wonder how many of these cheaper range of lenses Sigma sell?

They seem to be treading water a bit at the moment, there hasn't been anything really of note from them since they launched the 35 f/1.2. Everything since then has been a bit meh.

I think this range of lenses is of note as they've gone in a slightly different direction.

I don't own any but I applaud them for making lenses like the f2 DG DN lenses with their aperture rings and pseudo old lens styling. If that's what this latest lens is. I think these look nicer than the usual featureless black tube and I'm glad that with these lenses they've gone for a look for both the lens and the end result.

Lucky for you I have one in sales :ROFLMAO:
Regardless of where you purchase it from the good thing about the 28-200mm is it gives you f2.8 at the wide end which is useful. So it is like a halfway point between having f2.8 and not having it at all.

£325 is a very good price indeed.

Just watched about every review now. :) It's definitely been very well received - almost every review has been super-positive with just minor (and liveable-with) issues mentioned. Thanks for the heads-up and it's definitely on my radar.

But having mulled it over, the lack of OSS with no IBIS means is one issue. Plus the 24-28mm range. On the former, I've lined up a weekend loan of a 28-70/OSS kit lens to reacquaint myself with its foibles, as suggested by another forumite above. And I'll also to decide how much I miss 24mm, and narrow my choice from there. I am leaning towards the 24-105G, despite the extra £££s.

If I could go back id have the 24-105 over my Tamron 28-200 any day, I really miss the wide end.

If and when Sony release the 24-70 GM II I might get that, the Tamron will serve as a telephoto lens.

Nice picture but it looks incredibly soft on my computer, how have you uploaded it?

The original image is tack sharp.
I exported it from Lightroom to my desktop 1600x1067 @ 240 pixels per ", then attached the file from there. The original image is 7008x4672. I suppose that's the problem?

I think the pictures should be a max of 1,000 pixels on the longest side and 500k. If the picture is larger than that maybe the forum strangles it more? Maybe try posting again and see what happens.

I use IMGUR which is free.

I've mostly given up worrying about sharpness here and if someone says a picture is sharp that's good enough for me :D

I dunno, I always link from flickr (y)

Used to the Sony 24-105mm lens before getting the tamron 28-200mm. The Sony renders very nicely and has OSS if you need it.
But Sony is also larger.

I personally simply decided I prefer to carry 28-200mm over 24-105mm+70-200mm since I normally have an UWA lens anyway for the 24mm end.

But both very good options (y)

I'm only selling it to try a two lens approach for my travel plans
16-35GM + tamron 35-150mm f2-2.8

Not sure if it'll actually work out but worth a try.

Yes, I’m the same - this was an exception, I don’t think I’ll do it that way again! :exit:

The irony that a photography forum ruins every image directly uploaded :ROFLMAO:

Doesn't look like it's been mentioned yet,
Sigma 20mm f2 DN on its way

It has a page back.

:D

I like the slightly retro MF lens like styling of Sigma lenses, maybe this one will be in that line.

Thinking of getting an A7S.

The original 2014 model.

Bad idea or was it a decent camera in its day.

I suppose it could depend on how good a deal you get. On mp count the thinking is that if you have low mp and high mp count cameras and equalise the file size the IQ will be similar so I'm not sure if the 12mp sensor has any great advantage on that front. AFAIK the A7s was meant to be good for vid but I've no idea how it compares to cameras in the same price range. Someone might know so watch this space :D

What interests you about the A7s?

Mainly not wanting to spend over 500 for a full frame mirrorless sony, so the choices are quite limited then.

I read the video features were a bit better on that model and i do like a play about with video sometimes.

I guess if i upped the budget by a couple of hundred it would then include more choice.

Yep A7RII is an incredible bargain if you can up your budget a bit more.
Under £500 I'd look for A7 or A7r unless you are particularly keen on video. But original A7s can't shoot 4K internally.

If you're wanting it for high iso video and it's cheap, maybe but otherwise I don't think so. I bought an A7SII and while its high iso video is absolutely incredible it's just not something I need that often and since it's a weak stills camera, I end up taking a different camera that is solid at video and great at stills if it's not super low light. I had originally planned to keep the A7SII for video and even bought a Ronin-SC gimbal for it but the setup is far too bulky nor gives me much of an advantage. I've been thinking for a long time I just need to bite the bullet, take the loss and get rid of the camera and gimbal.

I'm not a big video person though.

Hi People, I am looking for a little help please. I am buying the G200-600 lens and was wondering what my best option for the camera would be to pair up with it. I will be using it mainly for birds in flight and general wildlife photography. I would like to spend upto £1000 on the camera so guess it would be a used model.

A7iii probably at that price.

If you wait a week or two, I can offer some advice. ;) I've just picked one up at around £325 (that's the camera value once I have sold off the unwanted stuff included in the deal). Cheapest way back into the FE system (I had an A7ii a while back). While the A7S was well-received back when new, modern reviewers no longer consider the low-light sensitivity that useful or special compared to higher res versions of the A7. Unfortunately, as we both know, those high res versions are £1000+. I will put the extra £££s into lenses.

12MP is fine for me - I've stopped chasing megapixel resolutions, as I don't print large and the 'fun' of 100% pixel-peeping finally wore off. I've been using a 16MP Fuji for a couple of years, and not once have I missed the 24MP of the A7ii. Files load faster, edit faster, etc. Wish the A7S had IBIS, though.

Of course, if your camera earns you an income, then it might be easier to justify the more expensive, more modern A7 cameras.

When I had a 5D I thought I'd never want better image quality but I'm happy to have it now :D The fact that the 5D was only 12mp never crossed my mind. I do know that others value the high mp count cameras but for a lot of people 12mp could well be more than perfectly adequate.

A7c and Voigtlander Heliar Classic 50mm f1.5 pictures...

This is the lens on a Leica...

Well it has been a long time since I shot jazz gigs, and as of today I will be starting it back up as my life has to go on for the love I have of this. So you might well start to see me posting more in here now.
Looking forward to seeing your pictures Dave

Years ago me and my then GF used to go to country and western and line dance events. Back then I had a Nikon SLR and later got a Fuji S602 pro zoom which I found just about useless for that sort of thing.

I'll look forward to seeing your pictures.

For anyone interested.

The rumor site on the Loawa 45mm f0.95 and 85mm f5.6.

About the 45mm...

"Overall the Laowa delivers very nice portraits / street photo / object details with a very good skin rendering, very good color rendition , smooth background blur for short and medium distance and a relatively good resistance to flare. Unfortunately the sharpness wide open is just average like all the others 50mm F0.95. So although the Laowa is 25-50% more expensive it does not do much better on that field

The Laowa 35mm F0.95 Argus is better, as having already a good sharpness wide open and is standing out in the crowd of F0.95 lenses"

This is interesting... "and is standing out in the crowd of F0.95 lenses."

Who would have thought that there'd be a crowd of F0.95 lenses? Plus, this is doubly surprising as we all know that the tiny Sony mount can't even accommodate f1.2 :D

Cheers Alan, just got back now and downloading the images, only took a few 1,590.
